University of the West Indies celebrates 70

The University of the West Indies is now observing its 70th year of uninterrupted service to the region, and in Barbados, home to the premier medical faculty the celebration was marked by introduction of the first degree in Nursing programme.

&#;This very week we started our first degrees in Nursing, MScs in Nursing Administration and Nursing Education, 19 dollarbank com have signed up,&#; Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (FMS), Cave Hill, Dr. Peter Adams, said last week.

If Dr. Adams sounded a bit on the boastful side, it is because this faculty in Barbados, though not the first for UWI medical sciences, has over the years emerged as the leader across the region.

&#;This year we celebrate not only 70 years of the founding of UWI and of medical education at UWI but we also celebrate 51 years of medical education in Barbados,&#; said Adams at a ceremony marking the tertiary institution&#;s 70th birthday.

&#;The FMS at Cave Hill has the best and brightest from around the Caribbean applying for places in the MBBS [Bachelor of Medicine] programme. This year, four Barbados scholarship winners and five exhibition winners have entered the MBBS programme. We have also accepted students from Trinidad and Tobago, The Bahamas and Dominica. The majority of our students is non-Barbadian. We limit our intake to allow for a quality clinical education at the Polyclinics and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital,&#; Adams said.

Medicine was the starting point of UWI, in Mona, Jamaica, and in relating the history of the Barbados faculty that has not only jumped to top position but is also now embarking on the training of nurses.

Adams said that, &#;in the first six students arrived in Barbados to complete their final year of the MBBS degree as part of the Eastern Caribbean Medical Scheme and in some 42 years ago we expanded to the SCMR (Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance) and taught the final two years of the programme.

&#;In10 years ago the full faculty was established at Cave Hill.&#;

Adams said that planning for the establishment of UWI began during World War II, and cited this, &#;an example of how people with vision and foresight with very little resources could plan for the future and put something in place that would serve generations to come.&#;

This university with campuses in Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago; and an Open Campus with 16 centres across the region has its genesis in when Britain&#;s Secretary of State for the Colonies, Sir Oliver Stanley, observed &#;there is an urgent and fundamental need to enlarge our facilities for higher education without which these leaders [of the colonies] cannot be creative.&#;

Following that a committee decided on a regional university, and Adams said, &#;to this day the UWI remains one of the few multinational universities in the world.&#;

Adams explained that there are several multi-campus universities but not many multi-national universities.

He said that the first UWI faculty was medical because of &#;severe physician shortages in the region.&#;

Mona was the first site chosen, which was suitable for facilities such as the Gibraltar Camp, established in to house Jewish refugees and displaced persons from Malta and Gibraltar along with prisoners of war.

&#;Jamaica also had a well-developed hospital system with a population size that would provide an adequate number of patients, critical for an indigenous medical school to successfully serve its purpose,&#; Adams said, adding, &#;medicine cannot be learnt from text books and indigenous medical schools must have access to hospitals and clinics with conditions relevant to the region its graduates will serve.&#;

&#;The medical faculty has certainly made an impact on health care in the region. We now have an adequate supply of physicians in many of the islands,&#; he said.

Mona Campus

The oldest campus, located in Mona, Jamaica encompasses acres of land nestled in a lush valley, formerly part of two large sugar estates. Historic ruins such as the aqueduct and water wheel remind of its plantation origins. The campus reflects a vibrant artistic community with several statues and murals dotting the landscape. One of the most impressive buildings on the Mona Campus is the Faculty of Medical Sciences’ Teaching and Research Complex. This 30, square metre state-of-the-art facility is home to students pursuing professional degrees in the various Health and Basic Medical Science disciplines. Mona is also the birthplace of specialised indigenous research centres such as the Tropical Medicine Research Institute, now renamed the Caribbean Institute for Health Research (CAIHR), and the Reggae Studies Unit.

St Augustine Campus

The St. Augustine Campus is situated 15km from Trinidad and Tobago’s capital, Port-of-Spain. With its focus on research and innovation, it a true representation of an innovative, internationally competitive, contemporary university deeply rooted in the Caribbean. It was born out of a merger between the University College of the West Indies and the old Imperial College for Tropical Agriculture. As such, the campus features diverse and rare species of tropical trees and flowering plants from around the world. Its International Cocoa University of the west indies faculty of medicine cave hill is “the biggest and most important collection of cocoa gene types” in the world, and its Cocoa Research Centre has the legacy of over 80 years of research to support the local and global cocoa industry.

At the same time, it is consciously designed to reflect a global landscape. It is focussed on transforming itself into a smart campus to better serve the needs of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean. The campus has developed centres of excellence including the Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES), the George Alleyne Chronic Disease Research Centre and the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination. It is also home to the state-of-the-art Usain Bolt Sporting Complex, which includes a FIFA-rated football field, an IAAF-rated athletic track, cricket high performance centre, sport labs and gyms.

InThe UWI proudly launched its fifth campus in Antigua and Barbuda, which is nestled in the Five Islands Village, a quiet farming and fishing village of people that was named for the five rock islands in the adjacent Five Islands Harbour. It lies just km southwest of the nation's capital city, St. John's. The UWI Five Islands is being designed as a 21st century, fit-for-purpose campus, with a focus on the robust expansion of the region's social capital, presenting citizens of the OECS with new opportunities to access higher education.

INTRODUCTION TO THE FACULTY Background The University of the West Indies (UWI), the region’s premier tertiary educational institution traces its origin back to when the University College of the West Indies was established in Mona, Jamaica as a college of the University of London. This college became the University of the West Indies in Only 33 undergraduate students were admitted in - all medical students. UWI today has campuses in Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and a total enrolment of over 40, students registered in a wide range of programmes in several faculties. Inthe Faculty expanded to incorporate final year clinical teaching programmes at the Cave Hill Campus and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados and the St. Augustine Campus and Port of Spain General Hospital in Trinidad and Tobago. In only 6 students went to each site, but the numbers quickly expanded and in it was arranged for students to complete the final 2 years in the Eastern Caribbean. With this expansion, the School of Clinical Medicine and Research was established at Cave Hill. Inthe Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex was opened at Mount Hope in Trinidad and Tobago. This facility houses UWI’s second full medical programme under a multi- disciplinary Faculty, with a Medical School as well as Schools of Dentistry, Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine. In the Cave Hill Campus upgraded and expanded its School of Clinical Medicine and Research to the Faculty of Medical Sciences delivering the full 5-year MB BS programme. Over the years graduate programmes in a wide range of specialties have been developed at all campuses. The UWIs medical programme at inception was accredited by the General Medical Council of the UK. In JulyThe Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine (CAAM-HP) and Other Health Professions was established by the Governments of the Region (CARICOM). With representatives of both the GMC and the Canadian Licensing Authority on its executive, it replaced the GMC for the purpose of accreditation of medical programmes in the region. The UWIs Medical Programme is accredited by CAAM-HP. Today, the University of the West Indies as a whole has the unique status of being a truly international university, serving as the principal tertiary education institution for 17 Caribbean (CARICOM) countries and, most recently, Bermuda, as well as hosting a growing number of international students. The Faculty of Medical Sciences plays a vital role in the training of health care professionals, particularly doctors and at all levels, from undergraduate through post graduate to continuing medical education, for the entire region. 6
MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Welcome to the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Cave Hill Campus, University of the West Indies. The FMS, Cave Hill offers three undergraduate degrees - the full 5-year MB BS undergraduate degree for persons wishing to become physicians, a 3-year Bachelor of Health Sciences for persons working in fields related to Medicine and from this academic year a BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. Due to the COVID pandemic there was a shift to online teaching and examinations. This was not unique to the UWI but occurred at universities across the world. The Moodle Online Learning Management system and Blackboard Collaborate were already in use before the COVID pandemic started and these were supplemented by Zoom and MS Teams. Face-to-face clinical teaching however continued even if some modifications were necessary. The COVID pandemic is unpredictable but in the / academic year we hope to deliver many of our classes face-to-face and hopefully students will once again enjoy the campus experience. The MBBS programme is our oldest programme with the full 5-year programme being offered at Cave Hill since and clinical training in Barbados for over 50 years. Medical students attending the Cave Hill campus can be assured of a quality education. The MB BS 5-year programme of the UWI is accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP), the regional accreditation board. Since October the MBB BS degree offered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Cave Hill has been recognised by the National Committee of Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) of the USA to have been accredited by a process comparable to that used for US Medical Schools. Most doctors practising in Barbados have studied at the UWI, with many competing their degrees right here at Cave Hill Campus. Graduates have distinguished themselves as lecturers, researchers, specialists, family physicians, and public health practitioners. With the establishment of the FMS, modern teaching facilities have been provided both at Cave Hill campus and adjacent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Studying Medicine is exciting but demanding, just like a career in Medicine is likely to be. From the end of the 2 nd year onwards student enrolled in the MBBS programme will find themselves working through normal university vacation periods. You are likely to have students in your class from a number of Caribbean islands in particular The Bahamas, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. Lifelong friendships are often formed in Medical School. Students spend most of the first 3 years on campus. Teaching facilities include the purpose-built FMS Laboratory and Teaching complex. In addition, Cave Hill campus boasts of high quality sporting facilities. For the final 2 years training is conducted at the Queen Elizabeth hospital and the Polyclinics, supplemented by teaching done in the E R Walrond Clinical Skills building. With an intake of about 70 students a year the FMS is neither too large and impersonal nor too small. Located near the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is the George Alleyne Chronic Disease research Centre. This is the research arm of the faculty and staff contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme. Several important research projects are underway there. There are a variety of specialities and career options possible after graduation. There should be a speciality to suit your interest. Right here at Cave Hill we have several postgraduate programmes to choose from. Some have been established at this campus over 30 years ago and some very recently. There are strong programmes in the clinical specialities leading to the DM in hospital-based specialities. These include Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Psychiatry. There is also a Diploma, MSc and DM in Family Medicine, and the Masters and Doctor in Public Health. In addition, a number of PhD programmes are offered in other specialities. MSc Nursing degrees in Administration and Education and a Postgraduate Diploma in Paediatric Nursing are also offered. Ina Bachelor of Health Sciences degree commenced at Cave Hill. This programme has been growing in strength since inception and is offered in conjunction with the Faculties of Science and Technology, Law, Humanities and Social Sciences. The programme is aimed at people wishing to establish careers in health education, para-clinical services and healthcare administration. From September this year the year BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics will be launched. This programme is aimed at people wishing to become Dieticians. Students will benefit from professional placements in the clinical, community and food service settings. For those joining us this year, I welcome you as you embark on an exciting journey.
