Exclusive: Wal-Mart expands online grocery pickup to eight more cities

By Nathan Layne

3 Min Read

(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc WMT.N is expanding free curbside pickup of groceries into eight new cities this month including Kansas City and Austin as the retailer gains confidence it can make the strategy work on a larger scale, a senior executive told Reuters.

The expansion, which includes adding stores in markets where it already has a presence, will increase the number of stores with the service by a third to about and widen its footprint to 30 cities, Michael Bender, chief operating officer of Wal-Mart’s e-commerce operations, said in an interview on Monday.

Bender said that Wal-Mart was preparing to expand further beyond this move, which could suggest the retailer may look to roll out the service to a more sizeable portion of its nearly 4, stores across the United States.

“The data we’ve collected gives us confidence that with existing customers we are getting a larger share of their wallet and that’s complemented by new customers we are bringing into the fold,” he said. “There will be more so stay tuned.”

By focusing on in-store pickup, Wal-Mart is aiming to capitalize on its network of stores, drawing a sharp contrast with mynewextsetup.us AMZN.O, an online-only retailer which has struggled to find the right pricing model and is delivering groceries in a handful of cities for a fee.

Other traditional supermarkets are also trying to figure out a profitable way to sell groceries online.

Kroger KR.N offers pickup at 47 locations and more than a stores in its Harris Teeter chain, a company spokesman said. Kroger charges $ per order after the first three orders. Wal-Mart does not have pickup fees.

Bender said customer satisfaction scores in its own surveys from the stores and 22 cities it had expanded to in October were in the mid to high 90’s. He said the service was very popular among mothers with children who like having groceries delivered to their trunk without having to leave the car.

In addition to Kansas City, Missouri and Austin, Texas, Wal-Mart will roll out the service later this month to select stores in Boise, Idaho; Richmond and Virginia Beach, Virginia; Provo, Utah; Daphne, Alabama and Charleston, South Carolina.

Shoppers can choose from about 30, to 40, mainly grocery items, roughly the same assortment as in stores. After ordering and paying online, customers drive to the store at a designated time and a “personal shopper” - a new position that has been added to handle the job - brings the groceries to your car.

The push in online grocery dovetails with a $ billion investment that Wal-Mart has made over two years into boosting worker wages and in training, steps that it hopes will improve its customer service and translate into higher sales.

Bender said the “personal shoppers” are getting to know their customers, such as how ripe they like their bananas, and sees grocery pickup as one way to “help change the perception of the service at Wal-Mart.”

“Our customers have told us that grocery pickup is a game changer. They are now able to complete their grocery shopping in a matter of minutes – between errands or on their way home – without ever getting out of the car,” Susan Vanderlip, Walmart’s eCommerce market coach, said in a statement.

Most people work an job and they don&#;t have the luxury of going to the store at 9am on a Tuesday like me. I&#;ve done the post-office grocery store run and it&#;s a madhouse in there! And Saturday or Sunday afternoons are not much better. Save yourself a ton of time and your sanity. Order your groceries through Walmart Online Grocery Pickup. Call them when you are 10 minutes away and you&#;ll be loaded up and headed home before your coworker walks from the parking lot to the front of the store. And it&#;s so convenient that all the 9am Tuesday shoppers like me can have their spouse do it on their way home from work. So now I don&#;t have to go at all!

#3 It&#;s Like a Drive-Thru, Over-the-Counter Pharmacy

You know when you are sick but you aren&#;t sick enough to go to the doctor? Or maybe it&#;s a virus that antibiotics won&#;t help? And you can barely make it out of bed long enough to turn on Paw Patrol, so finding everyone&#;s shoes and dragging them into the store with you is out of the question? And you can&#;t use the Pharmacy drive thru for cough drops, kleenex and cold medicine, right? Well Walmart Online Grocery Pickup is your dream come true. #4 Because You Have No Idea How to Choose a Cantaloupe

I seriously struggle with produce. I am notoriously bad at picking watermelons, cantaloupes, mangoes and don&#;t even get me started on coconuts. Walmart Online Grocery Pickup makes it a breeze. Their grocery experts carefully choose all your items, including produce, meat and seafood. I was pretty skeptical myself but I&#;ve done this 3 times now and all my produce has been perfect. Plus it helps that Walmart offers a freshness guarantee. If you are not satisfied with a product you receive through Walmart Grocery, simply call Customer Care for a refund.

#5 No More Checkout Line Embarrassment

We&#;ve all been there. Your daughter has a case of head lice and your son may or may not have athlete&#;s foot. Toss in an oh-my-gosh-are-we!? pregnancy test and some hemorrhoid cream and you&#;re set for checkout disaster. Because as soon as you put all those things on the checkout belt, here comes Gossip Mom right in line behind you. You turn red and frantically try to hide it all under the cereal boxes and frozen veggies. Avoid all the embarrassment with Walmart Online Grocery Pickup. Plus you can send your husband to pick it up and he&#;ll have no idea he just brought home a club-size box of super plus tampons.

I mentioned above about how there&#;s no subscription fee and the same low-prices that you find in-store. But what really makes Walmart Online Grocery Pickup cheaper is that you won&#;t have any impulse purchase. This means an end to all the candy and crackers to bribe your kids to behave. No more random nail polish bottles that you think you have to have when you are in-store and none of the &#;I must have Chocolate!&#; guilty purchases. You get what&#;s on your list and only that, every time.

Walmart Online Grocery Pickup

#7 Get Out of the Substitution Game

It&#;s so frustrating when your store is out of something you need. So you spend what seems like hours looking at all the other items near it, searching for a suitable alternative. Let Walmart Online Grocery Pickup worry about that for you. First of all they have nifty little devices that tell them where all the items are in the store. This means they check end caps and back stock to make sure your desired item truly is out of stock. If that&#;s the case, they will substitute your item for the closest alternative and if that means a cheaper price, then you are refunded the difference. If the substituted item is higher in price, you pay the lower price. And if you are super brand loyal, you don&#;t have to enable substitutions. Just grab the item on your next order.

#8 It Makes Vacation a Breeze

When we go on vacation we love to go with a vacation rental instead of a hotel because there&#;s more space and we can cook our own meals. The only downside is shopping once we arrive at our destination. Shopping at a different store is always tricky. You aren&#;t familiar with where things are. You wander around trying to find just what you need with the whole family in tow. It can be crazy. Not with Walmart Online Grocery Pickup! Select an eligible store in your destination city and pick up your groceries when you roll into town. Plus you can order it all before you leave because Walmart lets you select a pickup date up to 2 weeks in the future!

So there you have it. I&#;m fairly confident that Walmart Online Grocery Pickup will change your life like it&#;s changed mine. Plus for a limited time, you can get $10 off your first Walmart Online Grocery Pickup order of $50 or more. That&#;s a 20% savings on meat, produce and the things you buy every single week. There is an option to designate someone to pickup your order if you are unable to go plus Walmart will refund the difference if the price drops between your order and collection time.

There is still an option to get groceries delivered, which starts at $ but can rise to $ during busy times or you can get free shipping by joining Walmart+ for $ per year.

After ordering and walmart curbside grocery online, customers drive to the store at a designated time and a “personal shopper” - a new position that has been added to handle the job - brings the groceries to your car.
