Wisconsin DMV temporarily closed some offices and cut down on services, here's what you need to know about it
There's no waiting in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles right now. In fact, there are no lines at all.
The Wisconsin DMV drastically cut down its in-person services as of Wednesday due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, suspending in-person vehicle transactions indefinitely. Satellite facilities in Wittenberg, Fort Atkinson, Reedsburg, New Richmond, Abbotsford, Minocqua and Oconomowoc have been temporarily closed due to the "Safer at Home" order with patrons directed to mynewextsetup.us for most regular services.
Only a handful of in-person services remain active, though they are by appointment only and those appointments must be made by calling () The three continuing services are as follows:
- Commercial Driver Licenses (CDLs)
- Voters needing identification and using the Voter ID Petition Process
- New Wisconsin residents who need a driver's license or ID to vote
All vehicle-related transactions, including titling a vehicle and renewing a registration, can be done online. Patrons can also go online to obtain a duplicate driver's license, renew their ID card or change their address, among other services.
Driver's licenses scheduled to expire during the public health crisis, including CDLs, are extended for 60 days. There will also be no road testing for non-CDL vehicles during this time. Vehicle emissions testing requirements have also been extended, but plates should still be renewed online or by mail before the expiration date. Administrative suspension hearings will be offered by telephone or on paper, not in-person.
First-time drivers pursuing an instruction permit will have to wait until normal operations resume as those are only issued at service centers and not online.
