One likely contributing factor behind the move is the fact that Musk stands to save an estimated $ billion in capital gains taxes by moving his residence and business from California to Texas.

In spite of Tesla's new manufacturing presence in the Lone Star State, franchise laws prohibit the company from selling cars directly to customers, which it does in most other states.

The Gigafactory in Austin is expected to employ 5, workers at the 2,acre facility, where it plans to build the Cybertruck and other models. It's set to open this year.

On Monday, Musk promised an update to the much-delayed Cybertruck's availability in January.

"Oh man, this year has been such a supply chain nightmare & it's not over!," he tweeted. "I will provide an updated product roadmap on next earnings call."

PrimeTime: How Much Money Should I Save to Move to L.A.?

As many of you know, I'm a huge proponent of the idea that if you want to be a television writer, you must MUST MUST live in Los Angeles. (If you haven't heard me pounding this home, click HERE and HERE.) So this week's email comes from Kevin, who asks an interesting and important question&#x;

My question is: How much would one have to save up in order to safely make the jump when you factor in the necessity for rent, travel, car insurance (seeing as L.A. is the lawsuit capital of the world, with some of the worst drivers) &#x; and then there&#x;s that whole eating thing we all have to do; because, it will take at least some time to find a job once out there.

Well, Kevin, I'm not an accountant or financial adviser and I'm terrible at math and numbers -- so take anything in this column with a grain of salt-- but I do do a lot of work with interns and college students, so I get a pretty decent idea of what young people and newcomers spend when they first arrive in L.A. (FYI, this info is not from any official study &#x; but I think it's still pretty close.) Here are some of the major expenses you can expect to encounter &#x;

Moving to L.A.

How much you spend on your move to L.A. depends on many factors. How far are you traveling? Are you staying in hotels or with friends? Hiring movers are doing it all yourself? Buying supplies and eating in the car, or stopping at restaurants along the way?

I think $$ seems like a good ballpark to move cross-country to L.A. One student I recently worked with estimated she spent about $ for an mile drive over three or four days. This includes $ on food, gas, and hotels, and an additional $ on car maintenance: oil changes, brakes, tire rotation, etc. Another student traveled miles and spent $

Rent

Rents in L.A. can vary wildly depending on the size of an apartment and location. Here's a general range for average apartment rents:

  • 1 bedroom - $ - $
  • 2 bedroom - $ - $
  • 3 bedroom - $ - $

Location is probably the biggest factor in determining rent costs. Centrally located, busy areas like West L.A. or West Hollywood are most expensive, but you can find much cheaper places if you go further into the Valley.

You'll obviously also need to pay utilities, and I'd plan on spending about $$45/month on gas, and about $75/month on electricity.

Many people also cut down on rent (and utilities) by having roommates; have two or three roommates, and you may reduce your monthly rent to around $ (FYI, the best L.A. apartment-hunting resources are Craigslist, which is free, and mynewextsetup.us, which is a subscription service.)

Food & Supplies

Most newcomers and students seem to spend about $$ per person per month on groceries and about $ per month on toilet paper, soap, shampoo, laundry, etc.

Also, while eating out can get to be expensive quickly, it tends to be something people to do a lot. Maybe it's because there's such a huge social aspect to networking in the entertainment industry &#x; maybe it's because everything is so spread out, and homes are far from work &#x; maybe it's because there are so many restaurants (although frankly, I think Chicago is a better restaurant town).

Most students seem to average about $$/month on eating at restaurants (not counting bars, clubs, etc.), but you can easily spend much more that; I had lunch today with a talent manager who says he spends about $/month on lunches alone.

Your Car

Sadly, having a car is a necessity in Los Angeles. Not only is our public transportation system not-so-great, but the entertainment industry is spread out all over the city. Some offices are in Studio City, others are in Hollywood, others are in Manhattan Beach.

You'll not only need a car to get to meetings and interviews, but many entry-level jobs (like runners and P.A.'s) require you to go on errands &#x; buying supplies, delivering packages, etc. &#x; and a prerequisite of getting the job is being able to drive yourself around. (Some jobs will reimburse you for mileage, but not all.)

Also, writers, directors, actors, etc. are freelance &#x; so they're never working in the same place. Even writers who are on the same job for a while eventually switch shows, so one month you may be working in Burbank, the next in Culver City &#x; and you won't be able to rely on public transportation to get you to and from all these places.

Your monthly car and insurance payments depend on what you drive, but for the sake of this blog, let's average most car payments between $$ (assuming you buy, not lease), and we'll put car insurance at $$/month.

Gas can be a killer in L.A., especially because cheaper rents are found further away from main locations, which means you have to drive more to get to work. I live fairly centrally &#x; and close to my current job &#x; so I spend about $/month. But I've talked to people who spend over $/month on gas.

You'll also pay a lot of parking. A) You'll need to valet your car a lot, B) You'll pay a lot of meters, and C) Because &#x; trust me &#x; when you first get here, you'll get a few parking tickets (L.A. parking signs can be notoriously hard to decipher). One student I talked to averaged $/month in parking tickets over her first three months!

Parking tickets aside, I'd estimate about $60/month for parking (although some jobs may also require you to pay a monthly parking fee).

Going Out, Having Fun

The costs of funding an L.A. social life can vary wildly, but entertainment is a highly social industry &#x; and legitimate business is done over dinner, drinks, or rounds of golf. As you know from reading this blog, I'm a big proponent of taking colleagues and contacts to lunch, drinks, or coffee; casual business lunches are a great way to nurture relationships that could eventually pay off in a job, a sale, a collaboration, or project. (Also, as a freelancer working in entertainment, you can occasionally itemize and deduct some of these expenses at tax time: certain business meals, movie tickets, books you might use for research and development, etc. Talk to your accountant, but if you're spending money on career-related expenses, you can possibly write them off.)

One student recently averaged about $/month on "fun money"; another estimated $ These seem to me like smart estimates &#x; although I'm sure many people spend much more.

So, to sum this all up, here's a breakdown of the major expenses you can expect to encounter.

ONE-TIME MOVING EXPENSES

This is clearly a broad range, but it should give you a sense of the costs you'll find for various lifestyles. There are also probably some invisible expenses I'm not covering: You may need to provide first and last month's rent, or buy health insurance, or new clothes, or hook-up the home phone and Internet, or support a family, etc. But I'll leave these details up to you.

As you said, Kevin &#x; you'll probably be moving out here without a job, so you'll want a little nest egg to help you survive awhile. I'd be conservative and come out with at least three to four months' survival money, maybe more.

Many people also get part-time jobs to help stay afloat. One of the interns in my current office graduated from college in May; she works full-time in production (for free, since it's an internship), then goes to her part-time job at the mall after work. It's a long day, but it's what people do to as they're trying to break in.

Anyway &#x; I hope this is helpful, Kevin. Again, remember: I am NOT a financial adviser, I'm terrible with math and numbers, and this is a very cursory report so do your own homework and take all this with a grain of salt.

“If we’re going to have a real shot at stemming the impact of the climate crisis,” explains Athena Motavvef, Earthjustice’s associate legislative representative in Washington, D.C., “we need to ditch fossil fuels, pivot to % clean energy, and achieve zero emissions. What is “Zero emissions”? Zero emissions means that a vehicle emits no pollutants to disrupt the climate or dirty our air.

It’s a broader category that describes electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and other emerging types of technology.

In simple terms, zero emissions means technology that doesn’t rely on combustion to power vehicles.

Meanwhile, Earthjustice attorneys are working to help our nation’s transportation sector transition away from gasoline combustion to zero emissions, including:

  • Electric Trucks: We’ve been working to increase the number of electric trucks in California — together with 20, residents, we asked the California Air Resources Board to enact the nation’s first electric truck manufacturing standard.
  • Charging Infrastructure: And Earthjustice is working with the Public Utilities Commission in California and other states to build morecharging infrastructure. This would relieve one of the biggest barriers to having an all-electric vehicle for those who do not have a garage or a driveway, through either workplace charging, or centralized electric vehicle fast charging.
  • Zero-Emissions Vehicles: We’re in court defending the ZEV mandate, which is essentially the California state mandate that a certain percentage of vehicle purchases in the state be zero emissions. Ten states have adopted the ZEV mandate through California’s special legal authority in the Clean Air Act.

“To make it safe to breathe, we need to implement electric vehicles as fast as possible,” said Earthjustice attorney Adrian Martinez of the Right to Zero campaign.

“Fortunately, as we have seen a change in administration, there’s a lot of opportunity at the federal level to bring electric transportation into communities. But we must recognize that a lot of the decisions on clean transportation are local. It’s city councils, it’s mayors, it’s state legislatures that are making the vast majority of transportation decisions in this country.”

PrimeTime: How Much Money Should I Save to Move to L.A.?

As many of you know, I'm a huge proponent of the idea that if you want to be a television writer, you must MUST MUST live in Los Angeles. (If you haven't heard me pounding this home, click HERE and HERE.) So this week's email comes from Kevin, who asks an interesting and important question&#x;

My question is: How much would one have to save up in order to safely make the jump when you factor in the necessity for rent, travel, car insurance (seeing as L.A. is the lawsuit capital of the world, with some of the worst drivers) &#x; and then there&#x;s that whole eating thing we all have to do; because, it will take at least some time to find a job once out there.

Well, Kevin, I'm not an accountant or financial adviser and I'm terrible at math and numbers -- so take anything in this column with a grain of salt-- but I do do a lot of work with interns and college students, so I get a pretty decent idea of what young people and newcomers spend when they first arrive in L.A. (FYI, this info is not from any official study &#x; but I think it's still pretty close.) Here are some of the major expenses you can expect to encounter &#x;

Moving to L.A.

How much you spend on your move to L.A. depends on many factors. How far are you traveling? Are you staying in hotels or with friends? Hiring movers are doing it all yourself? Buying supplies and eating in the car, or stopping at restaurants along the way?

I think $$ seems like a good ballpark to move cross-country to L.A. One student I recently worked with estimated she spent about $ for an mile drive over three or four days. This includes $ on food, gas, and hotels, and an additional $ on car maintenance: oil changes, brakes, tire rotation, etc. Another student traveled miles and spent $

Rent

Rents in L.A. can vary wildly depending on the size of an apartment and location. Here's a general range for average apartment rents:

  • 1 bedroom - $ - $
  • 2 bedroom - $ - $
  • 3 bedroom - $ - $

Location is probably the biggest factor in determining rent costs. Centrally located, busy areas like West L.A. or West Hollywood are most expensive, but you can find much cheaper places if you go further into the Valley.

You'll obviously also need to pay utilities, and I'd plan on spending about $$45/month on gas, and about $75/month on electricity.

Many people also cut down on rent (and utilities) by having roommates; have two or three roommates, and you may reduce your monthly rent to around $ (FYI, the best L.A. apartment-hunting resources are Craigslist, which is free, and mynewextsetup.us, which is a subscription service.)

Food & Supplies

Most newcomers and students seem to spend about $$ per person per month on groceries and about $ per month on toilet paper, soap, shampoo, laundry, etc.

Also, while eating out can get to be expensive quickly, it tends to be something people to do a lot. Maybe it's because there's such a huge social aspect to networking in the entertainment industry &#x; maybe it's because everything is so spread out, and homes are far from work &#x; maybe it's because there are so many restaurants (although frankly, I think Chicago is a better restaurant town).

Most students seem to average about $$/month on eating at restaurants (not counting bars, clubs, etc.), but you can easily spend much more that; I had lunch today with a talent manager who says he spends about $/month on lunches alone.

Your Car

Sadly, having a car is a necessity in Los Angeles. Not only is our public transportation system not-so-great, but the entertainment industry is spread out all over the city. Some offices are in Studio City, others are in Hollywood, others are in Manhattan Beach.

You'll not only need a car to get to meetings and interviews, but many entry-level jobs (like runners and P.A.'s) require you to go on errands &#x; buying supplies, delivering packages, etc. &#x; and a prerequisite of getting the job is being able to drive yourself around. (Some jobs will reimburse you for mileage, but not all.)

Also, writers, directors, actors, etc. are freelance &#x; so they're never working in the same place. Even writers who are on the same job for a while eventually switch shows, so one month you may be working in Burbank, the next in Culver City &#x; and you won't be able to rely on public transportation to get you to and from all these places.

Your monthly car and insurance payments depend on what you drive, but for the sake of this blog, let's average most car payments between $$ (assuming you buy, not lease), and we'll put car insurance at $$/month.

Gas can be a killer in L.A., especially because cheaper rents are found further away from main locations, which means you have to drive more to get to work. I live fairly centrally &#x; and close to my current job &#x; so I spend about $/month. But I've talked to people who spend over $/month on gas.

You'll also pay a lot of parking. A) You'll need to valet your car a lot, B) You'll pay a lot of meters, and C) Because &#x; trust me &#x; when you first get here, you'll get a few parking tickets (L.A. parking signs can be notoriously hard to decipher). One student I talked to averaged $/month in parking tickets over her first three months!

Parking tickets aside, I'd estimate about $60/month for parking (although some jobs may also require you to pay a monthly parking fee).

Going Out, Having Fun

The costs of funding an L.A. social life can vary wildly, but entertainment is a highly social industry &#x; and legitimate business is done over dinner, drinks, or rounds of golf. As you know from reading this blog, I'm a big proponent of taking colleagues and contacts to lunch, drinks, or coffee; casual business lunches are a great way to nurture relationships that could eventually pay off in a job, a sale, a collaboration, or project. (Also, as a freelancer working in entertainment, you can occasionally itemize and deduct some of these expenses at tax time: certain business meals, movie tickets, books you might use for research and development, etc. Talk to your accountant, but if you're spending money on career-related expenses, you can possibly write them off.)

One student recently averaged about $/month on "fun money"; another estimated $ These seem to me like smart estimates &#x; although I'm sure many people spend much more.

So, to sum this all up, here's a breakdown of the major expenses you can expect to encounter.

ONE-TIME MOVING EXPENSES

  • Moving to L.A.: $ - $ (from within the continental U.S.)

MONTHLY LIVING EXPENSES

  • Rent(for 1 person): $ - $
  • Gas utility: $35 - $45
  • Electricity: $75
  • Groceries: $
  • Supplies: $

This is clearly a broad range, but it should give you a sense of the costs you'll find for various lifestyles. There are also probably some invisible expenses I'm not covering: You may need to provide first and last month's rent, or buy health insurance, or new clothes, or hook-up the home phone and Internet, or support a family, etc. But I'll leave these details up to you.

As you said, Kevin &#x; you'll probably be moving out here without a job, so you'll want a little nest egg to help you survive awhile. I'd be conservative and come out with at least three to four months' survival money, maybe more.

Many people also get part-time jobs to help stay afloat. One of the interns in my current office graduated from college in May; she works full-time in production (for free, since it's an internship), then goes to her part-time job at the mall after work. It's a long day, but it's what people do to as they're trying to break in.

Anyway &#x; I hope this is helpful, Kevin. Again, remember: I am NOT a financial adviser, I'm terrible with math and numbers, and this is a very cursory report so do your own homework and take all this with a grain of salt.

It's official: Tesla is now a Texas company.

The electric automaker announced the move on Wednesday in a filing with the US Securities Exchange Corporation.

"On December 1, , Tesla, Inc. relocated its corporate headquarters to Gigafactory Texas at Harold Green Road, Austin, Texas ," it said.

The shift brings Tesla closer to its sister company, SpaceX, and is part of CEO Elon Musk's big breakup with the Bay Area. Tesla first began using Austin as the dateline in press releases in October.

One likely contributing factor behind the move is the fact that Musk stands to save an estimated $ billion in capital gains taxes by moving his residence and business from California to Texas.

In spite of Tesla's new manufacturing presence in the Lone Star State, franchise laws prohibit the company from selling cars directly to customers, which it does in most other states.

The Gigafactory in Austin is expected to employ 5, workers at the 2,acre facility, where it plans to build the Cybertruck and other models. It's set to open this year.

On Monday, Musk promised an update to the much-delayed Cybertruck's availability in January.

"Oh man, this year has been such a supply chain nightmare & it's not over!," he tweeted. "I will provide an updated product roadmap on next earnings call."

“If we’re going to have a real shot at stemming the impact of the climate crisis,” explains Athena Motavvef, Earthjustice’s associate legislative representative in Washington, D.C., “we need to ditch fossil fuels, pivot to % clean energy, and achieve zero emissions. Making electric vehicles accessible to all people is an important step towards that goal.”

In February, Earthjustice endorsed the Electric Vehicle Freedom Act, introduced by Representatives Andy Levin (D-MI) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). The bill proposes establishing a network of electric charging stations alongside public roads, to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles by the wider public.

What is “Zero emissions”? Zero emissions means that a vehicle emits no pollutants to disrupt the climate or dirty our air.

It’s a broader category that describes electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and other emerging types of technology.

In simple terms, zero emissions means technology that doesn’t rely on combustion to power vehicles.

Meanwhile, Earthjustice attorneys are working to help our nation’s transportation sector transition away from gasoline combustion to zero emissions, including:

  • Electric Trucks: We’ve been working to increase the number of electric trucks in California — together with 20, residents, we asked the California Air Resources Board to enact the nation’s first electric truck manufacturing standard.
  • Charging Infrastructure: And Earthjustice is working with the Public Utilities Commission in California and other states to build morecharging infrastructure. This would relieve one of the biggest barriers to having an all-electric vehicle for those who do not have a garage or a driveway, through either workplace charging, or centralized electric vehicle fast charging.
  • Zero-Emissions Vehicles: We’re in court defending the ZEV mandate, which is essentially the California state mandate that a certain percentage of vehicle purchases in the state be zero emissions. Ten states have adopted the ZEV mandate through California’s special legal authority in the Clean Air Act.

“To make it safe to breathe, we need to implement electric vehicles as fast as possible,” said Earthjustice attorney Adrian Martinez of the Right to Zero campaign.

“Fortunately, as we have seen a change in administration, there’s a lot of opportunity at the federal level to bring electric transportation into communities. But we must recognize that a lot of the decisions on clean transportation are local. It’s city councils, it’s mayors, it’s state legislatures that are making the vast majority of transportation decisions in this country.”

The electric automaker announced the move on Wednesday in a filing with the US Securities Exchange Corporation.

"On December 1,Tesla, Inc. relocated its corporate headquarters to Gigafactory Texas at Harold Green Road, Austin, Texas ," it said.

The shift brings Tesla closer to its sister company, SpaceX, and is part of CEO Elon Musk's big breakup with the Bay Area. Tesla first began using Austin as the dateline in press releases in October.

One likely contributing factor behind the move is the fact that Musk stands to save an estimated $ billion in capital gains taxes by moving his residence and business from California to Texas.

In spite of Tesla's new manufacturing presence in the Lone Star State, franchise laws prohibit the company from selling cars directly to customers, which it does in most other states.

The Gigafactory in Austin is expected to employ 5, workers at the 2,acre facility, where it plans to build the Cybertruck and other models. It's set to open this year.

On Monday, Musk promised an update to the much-delayed Cybertruck's availability in January.

"Oh man, this year has been such a supply chain nightmare & it's not over!," he tweeted. "I will provide an updated product roadmap on next earnings call."

‘Lithium Valley’ could save one of the most polluted areas in California

The world and world leaders are working on turning away from gas powered mode of transportation and especially investing in electric vehicles (EV) as a solution to lower emissions. To keep up with the growing demand for electric vehicles, more lithium mining will be needed. Lithium is a metal used to make rechargeable electric vehicle batteries—but the extraction process is often tied to hurting underrepresented communities. 

A lot of the world’s lithium currently comes from evaporation ponds in South South America and hard-rock mines in Australia, according to the Los Angeles Times. The extraction of the rare mineral is often met with fierce opposition from conservationists and Tribal Nations because it has often encroached on sacred indigenous land, especially in the American West. One drilling site in Southern California’s desert, near a notoriously polluted lake called the Salton Sea that spews toxic fumes and has a salinity level that kills off almost all of its wildlife, is taking a different approach to drilling for lithium. 

Controlled Thermal Resources, a clean energy resource developer, began drilling its first lithium and geothermal power production well called “Hell’s Kitchen” by the Salton Sea earlier this November and is backed by millions of dollars from investors including General Motors. These projects offer multiple solutions to the problems in the Salton Sea and surrounding areas—suctioning out lithium from the heavy-metal polluted waters and boosting energy production can create jobs and revenue from a seemingly hopeless situation. The project’s first base load of 50 megawatts of renewable power is scheduled to be delivered inwith 20, tonnes of lithium produced by

“If done correctly,” Frank Ruiz, Audubon California’s program director for the Salton Sea area told the LA Times, “it will elevate the region by creating jobs, benefit the state and the nation by making geothermal energy more affordable, and lay the groundwork for negotiations aimed at ensuring that some of the royalties from lithium production and related land leases are used to support dust reduction and environmental restoration projects.”

Demand for lithium is expected to triple bymaking drilling projects like Hell’s Kitchen  necessary. And lithium isn’t just necessary for electric vehicles—battery storage from solar and wind energy is going to need lithium to keep the lights on days when solar panels and wind turbines can’t keep up with demand. And as per the Biden Administration’s infrastructure plan, more and more of the country is being pushed to use electric vehicles for transportation. Midwestern states are even investing in EV-charging roads to support the use of electric vehicles which often use lithium batteries. 

Rahul Harkawat, the founder of startup Quantum Copper which is investigating methods to reduce lithium battery fires, says that there are different issues that come from using lithium, for example extracting it from the ground and the other materials that are used to make lithium batteries.  He believes that sustainable extraction (like the project in California) along with better solutions for reusing lithium could make the industry cause less harm to the environment.

“It’s the chemistry of lithium ion batteries… certain [lithium battery] formulations use products like nickel… and the extraction of those metals in countries [often] have very poor governance and sustainability metrics,” Harkawat says. 

Solutions for making lithium batteries more sustainable in their final form are reducing the risk long lasting lithium fires (that can cause toxic fumes and use up thousands of gallons of water) and figuring out a way to recycle materials, he says. Companies like Redwood Materials have already found a way to recover and recycle between percent of tough-to-recycle materials, like lithium, copper, nickel, and cobalt, from out-of-use EV batteries, according to TechCrunch. This could stop lithium batteries from sitting in landfills for centuries. 

“We can recycle and reuse lithium battery technology so it can become part of the circular economy,” Harkawat says.”So that is something that should also be reviewed in terms of its impact.” 

Longer-lasting, recyclable batteries can take some of the pressure off of ecosystems and communities that are impacted by extraction of materials, he says. And in a future where car developers might be producing electric vehicles exclusively, that is definitely something to consider.

“If we’re going to have a real shot at stemming the impact of the climate crisis,” explains Athena Motavvef, Earthjustice’s associate legislative representative in Washington, D.C., “we need to ditch fossil fuels, pivot to % clean energy, and achieve zero emissions. Meanwhile, Earthjustice attorneys are working to help our nation’s transportation sector transition away from gasoline combustion to zero emissions, including:

  • Electric Trucks: We’ve been working to increase the number of electric trucks in California — together with 20, residents, we asked the California Air Resources Board to enact the nation’s first electric truck manufacturing standard.
  • Charging Infrastructure: And Earthjustice is working with the Public Utilities Commission in California and other states to build morecharging infrastructure. This would relieve one of the biggest barriers to having an all-electric vehicle for those who do not have a garage or a driveway, through either workplace charging, or centralized electric vehicle fast charging.
