Best BBQ in Austin

It may be a little out of your way (about 30 minutes outside of Austin), but you won't want to miss one of Texas' most famous barbecue restaurants. The Roberts family recipes have roots back to the wagon trains in the mid's. A worldwide reputation and delightful down-home ambiance make the appeal that much greater, and a fireplace makes chilly days more tolerable while picnic tables accommodate diners both inside and out. House specialties include brisket, chicken, sausage, ribs and homemade cobblers. They do not accept credit cards. It's bring your own beer, which is a plus for many people.

Recommended for Barbecue because: One of the outside-but-closeby the city options that is a perennial favorite among Austinites.

Shelley's expert tip: Salt Lick is a great place to take groups or out-of-town visitors, and it's really an experience as much as a restaurant.

The beauty of Texas barbecue is that it's so intrinsically delectable, you don't need sauce to bring out the flavor. Kreuz Market, in fact, doesn't even offer any, and you won't find much in the way of side dishes, utensils, plates or condiments either. What you will discover is what many consider to be the finest barbecue this side of the Mississippi, all ordered up right at the pit, placed on butcher paper with soda crackers or white bread and lovingly devoured by legions of fans. If you want to jazz up said meat, simple adornments like jalapenos, pickles, onions and tomatoes suffice. A favorite for over a hundred years.

Recommended for Barbecue because: Lockhart is often called the barbecue capital of Texas, and Kreuz is worth the drive out.

If you've got time to be leisurely, this place is well worth the mile drive from Austin. SinceLouie Mueller and his family have been smoking briskets, jalapeno sausages, ribs and other meats over a giant pit in the middle of the building, typically selling out before closing time. Like true barbecue joints, the place is a bit dingy from years of smoke, and standard dining accoutrements (like plates) are absent, but when you're sinking your teeth into a chunk of meat so elementally delicious, who cares? Ranked one of the top 25 barbecue places in the world.

Recommended for Barbecue because: The famed Texas barbecue Mueller family's place in Taylor is a legendary restaurant.

Black's BBQ is one of the original favorites of Texas barbecue, with a longtime location in Lockhart (about 45 minutes east of Austin) where the Black family has been making barbecue for three generations. Now, an Austin location in the UT area has got a lot of barbecue fans in this city very happy. Offering seven different types of meat - including brisket that is smoked for 14 hours - the Austin location also puts out unique spins such as Waffle Wednesdays. Every Wednesday at 5 pm, they serve chicken and waffles, Black's BBQ Style: Slow smoked over Post Oak Wood, the chicken stays juicy and the skin crisp with the smoky taste of Texas BBQ. The waffle is Barrett Black's unique creation with a crispy, slightly sweet, flaky exterior with a rich soft interior that contrasts nicely with the smoky, juicy chicken.

Recommended for Barbecue because: With an original location located in Lockhart, billed as the BBQ capital of Texas, Black's is legendary. You can't go wrong here.

Located in a food trailer at the Aztec Food Park in East Austin, La Barbecue's head pitmaster Esaul Ramos smokes briskets, ribs, and sausages that people line up for. Former pitmaster John Lewis (now concentrating on a barbecue place in Charleston) once worked at Franklin and also alongside John Mueller, so this place has major history and experience behind it. While La Barbecue can definitely have lengthy lines, they move quickly and don't rival the multiple-hour wait that is usually to be found at Franklin.

Recommended for Barbecue because: A local favorite for expertly smoked, high-quality meats. It's good, old-fashioned barbecue.

Franklin Barbecue

Every day since Franklin Barbecue opened for business as a modest food trailer init has sold out of its famous brisket. After a showing in the movie "Chef," mentions in the New York Times and a nomination for the James Beard award, Aaron Franklin's food is even more heralded. The barbecue here has been heralded as some of the best in the country, and even with the larger brick and mortar location, you'll still find a line out the door more often than best central texas bbq - often with waits of three or four hours. The consistency is amazing, and although the lines are not something most people would brave frequently, Franklin's is a can't-miss experience at least once for barbecue lovers.

Recommended for Barbecue because: While on every barbecue list, this famed spot deserves its reputation for some of the best barbecue in the country.

Shelley's expert tip: Yes, the lines are long. Very long. Go very early with friends to make the wait more fun.

7 Austin barbecue best central texas bbq and trailers make Texas Monthly’s Top 50 list for


Every four years, just like the Olympics, the Texas Monthly team (led by barbecue editor Daniel Vaughn and longtime food editor Pat Sharpe) goes about the extreme sport of eating at an ungodly amount of barbecue restaurants in Texas. The goal: name the Top 50 purveyors of smoked meats in the Lone Star State. 

The magazine this week released its latest edition of that list, and, not surprisingly, Austin is very well represented. Three Austin establishments made the Top 10, and the order may surprise a casual brisket eater. John Bates’ Interstellar BBQ landed the No. 2 spot (read our review here) and new-schoolers LeRoy & Lewis claimed No. 5. Perennial favorite Franklin Barbecue rounded out the Austin representation in the Top 10, nabbing the No. 7 spot. 

Austin had the most spots (three) in the Top 10 of any city in the state. And the city’s dominance continued down the list. Damien Brockway’s trailer Distant Relatives, which opened earlier this year, is the newest member of the Top 50 (spots  are unranked) and joins list veterans La Barbecue, Micklethwait Craft Meats and Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ.

All of the Austin restaurants listed by Texas Monthly were in the last list of best barbecue published online by Austin, except for the not-yet-open Distant Relatives, which would certainly make our revised list and which will make an appearance in our upcoming Austin Dining Guide, which will name the 20 Best Restaurants and Trailers to open since the start of the pandemic.

In a sign of the changing times in which the Texas barbecue scene finds itself, the No. 1 spot on the list went to Goldee’s Barbecue in Fort Worth, which is run by a quintet of something guys, some of whom have experience smoking in Austin. Lockhart, long esteemed as the barbecue capital of Central Texas, claims no restaurants in the Top The town did, however, claim a spot in the honorable mentions, or “Next 50,” which the Texas Monthly website claims is “coming soon.”

Texas Monthly releases list of best BBQ joints in the state, five in Central Texas and Brazos Valley

Texas Monthly released its list of the top 50 BBQ spots across the state on Monday.

The list includes spots in Belton, Waco, Woodway, Brenham and Rockdale.

Miller's Smokehouse in Belton was among Texas Monthly's list.

The Belton BBQ spot opened in and its pit masters include Bradley Knight, Dirk Miller and Chris Oliver.

They utilize a post oak; offset smoker as their method to serve up some of the best BBQ in Bell County.

Texas Monthly praises Miller's Smokehouse for, "[sitting] right at the crossroads of old-school and new-school Texas barbecue."

Miller's Smokehouse is located at E. Central Ave in Belton and is open Sunday to Wednesday from a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday from a.m. to 8 p.m.

Brett's Backyard Bar-B-Que in Rockdale was also among Texas Monthly's list.

Brett's Backyard Bar-B-Que opened in From the beginning, the goal has always been to make the list, even more, to put Rockdale on the map.

"Texas Monthly, the impact is huge especially for a small town because a lot of people don't know where Rockdale, Texas is," said Brett Boren, owner and pitmaster at Brett's Backyard Bar-B-Que.

They utilize an oak; offset smoker and direct heat as their method in serving up some of the best BBQ in Milam County.

The article goes on to say, "The spot is known for brisket that is so tender and rich that even a few bites feel like enough."

Brett's Backyard Bar-B-Que is located at W. Cameron Avenue and is open Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until they're sold out.

Guess Family Barbecue in Waco also made the list of best BBQ spots in Texas.

The Waco spot opened in and its pit masters include Kyle Arwine, Reid Guess and Chuy Ortiz.

These pitmasters know that being on the list brings a lot of attention and that the quality of food produced has to be maintained.

"We're going to get a lot of recognition for being on the list, we're going to get a lot of new customers from out of town that are expecting a certain thing," said Guess.

They utilize a post oak; offset smoker as their method to serve some of the best BBQ in McLennan County.

Texas Monthly goes on to say, "the simply seasoned spareribs are hulking and tender, and the brisket is dazzlingly juicy."

Guess Family Barbecue is located at Franklin Avenue and is open Wednesday to Friday from 11 a.m. best central texas bbq 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

LJ's BBQ in Brenham also made Texas Monthly's list of best BBQ spots in Texas.

The Brenham location opened in and its pit masters include Corey Cook and Matt Lowery.

They utilize a post oak; offset smoker as their method to serve some of the best BBQ in Washington County.

Texas Monthly went on to say, "The sliced brisket was also a dream, boasting a beautiful smoke ring, well-peppered bark, and melty fat."

LJ's BBQ is located at W. Main and is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or until they're sold out.

Helberg Barbecue in Woodway finished out Texas Monthly's list.

The Woodway spot opened in and its pitmasters include Candace Daniels, David Ferlet, Josh Soliman, and Phillip Helberg.

"It's an honor you don't take lightly, it's a responsibility to uphold that quality and to maintain the integrity and respectability of the list, it motivates us to keep putting our best foot forward every day," said Helberg.

They utilize a post oak; offset smoker as their method to make some of the best BBQ in Woodway.

Texas Monthly went on to say, "While the brisket was beautiful, we found ourselves focused on the pork steak, the smoked chicken (also fried for extra-crispy skin), and the toothsome sausages."

Helberg Barbecue is located at N. Texas Hwy 6 and is open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until sold out.

Four-Day BBQ Road Trip Through Central Texas

Best BBQ in Texas? Now that&#x;s a heated question. Brisket (lean or fatty), ribs (pork or beef) or sausage (regular or spicy)? Or do you love the sides? Creamed corn, green beans, baked beans, cobbler and pie.

Koko here from A Taste of Koko, an Austin-based food blog, and I&#x;m going on a road trip to find the best BBQ spots in Central Texas! Here&#x;s my four-day itinerary.

Day One

Cooper&#x;s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que

My first stop on this four-day BBQ road trip through Texas was to Llano, Texas, for Cooper&#x;s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que. We do have a Cooper&#x;s in Austin, but this is the original location. Cooper&#x;s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que is on Texas Monthly&#x;s Top 50 BBQ list and home of the original World Famous Big Chop.

We loved the beef rib, smoked baked potato (soaked in BBQ meat juices and then smoked on the pit) and green beans.

Visit Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

You&#x;ll want to walk off all that BBQ, so put on your hiking shoes and go to Best central texas bbq Rock. It&#x;s a massive pink granite dome that rises above Central Texas. Reservations are required in advance: mynewextsetup.us

Go on a Search for Texas Bluebonnets

The best time to see Texas bluebonnets is from the end of April into May, and the best spots are Willow City Loop, Muleshoe Bend and Highway 29 East and West. You can still see different Texas wildflowers throughout the summer.

We checked into this local Airbnb in Llano for the night!

Day Two

Truth Barbeque

Truth Barbeque is a popular stop between Austin and Houston, but this BBQ spot is worth a trip on its own. Truth Barbeque was started by Leonard Botello IV in as a roadside outpost and in the past couple of years has gained critical acclaim with its placement at #10 best BBQ restaurant in Texas on the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ list. 

This was our favorite spot on this road trip for both the meats and sides! We ordered The Trinity &#x; 1 lb of brisket, 1 lb of ribs, 1 lb of sausage and 2 quarts of sides (that&#x;s 4 pints!). Loved the brisket, tater tot casserole, corn pudding, homemade pickles, potato roll sliced bread and the banana pudding. Truth Barbeque also sells cakes by the slice or whole.

Visit Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site

Located nearby is the picturesque Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. There are plenty of fascinating places to explore here, including the Barrington Living History Farm and the Star of the Republic Museum, not to mention space for picnicking and bird-watching. 

Stay at Country Dome Suites

I was looking for somewhere to stay near Brenham after eating at Truth Barbeque and stumbled upon these dome suites in nearby Kenney. They look tiny online, but they&#x;re actually really spacious on the inside with a full-size queen bed, bathroom, kitchen and dining area. Very unique experience!

Day Three

From Brenham, we set off for Lockhart, Texas.

Kreuz Market

Lockhart is one of the most popular cities in Texas for BBQ, and we started our exploration at Kreuz Market. This German market has been smoking meat in Lockhart, Texas, since Charles Kreuz Sr. came from a family of German immigrants and brought that heritage to his BBQ, smoking Texas-raised cattle and pork over native post oak wood.

We loved the beef rib, brisket, green beans and creamed corn. Kreuz also has German-style potatoes and sauerkraut! Don&#x;t miss the live music every Sunday at 1 p.m.

Black&#x;s Barbecue

There is a Black&#x;s Barbecue in Austin, but this is the original Black&#x;s Barbecue. It opened in and is the oldest BBQ joint in Texas continuously owned by the same family!

You have to get the giant beef ribs ($ per pound)! Black&#x;s also has sweet corn muffins, jalapeño corn muffins, cobbler, banana pudding and pies by the slice or whole with ice cream. Black&#x;s also sells frozen sausage, whole chicken and turkey. 

Smitty&#x;s Market

Smitty&#x;s Market was the last spot we went in Lockhart, and we thought they had the best sausage! This popular downtown institution offers an array of mouthwatering meats, sides and beer. Cash and check only. 

Check in at South Congress Hotel 

From Lockhart, we went back to Austin for a staycation at South Congress Hotel. This is one of my favorite hotels in Austin for its location, which puts a lot of restaurants and shops within walking distance. 

DAY FOUR

Explore the Blanton Museum of Art

Located on the University of Texas at Austin campus, the Blanton Museum of Art is one of my favorite museums in Austin. Recognized for its wide-ranging collection of paintings, prints and drawings, as well as Ellsworth Kelly&#x;s Austin installation, the Blanton holds the largest public art collection in Central Texas. 

SUP on Lady Bird Lake

Stand-up paddleboarding on Lady Bird Lake is probably my favorite activity in Austin, especially during sunset! Rowing Dock is one the best entry points to the lake.

Visit the Zilker Botanical Garden

Everyone knows about Zilker Park and Barton Springs Pool, but not as many are aware of the Zilker Botanical Garden. This lush urban spot offers 28 acres of gorgeous views and beautiful nature. And did you know we have a Japanese garden hidden inside the Zilker Botanical Garden? Make sure to check out the Taniguchi Japanese Garden when you visit.

Terry Black&#x;s

The very last stop on this BBQ road trip was at Terry Black&#x;s in Austin on Barton Springs Road. Out of all the beef ribs we had on this trip, Terry Black&#x;s was hands down the best. We also loved the moist brisket and sides like creamed corn and green beans. Make sure to check out Terry Black&#x;s wine and beer selection.

Pitboss and founder Mark Avalos began SLAB (Slow Low and Banging) in a food trailer in and has since expanded into a brick and mortar location. He's also been featured on the Travel Channel for his famous "sammiches."

Recommendations: Newcomers are advised to try The Notorious P.I.G., which is loaded with pulled pork, mustard coleslaw and Backyard Red Sauce.
