What is the Routing Number?
A routing number identifies the financial institution and the branch to which a payment item is directed. Along with the account number, it is essential for delivering payments through the clearing system. In Canada, there are two formats for routing numbers:
EFT Routing Number
An Electronic Fund Transactions (EFT) routing number is comprised of a three-digit financial institution number and a five-digit branch number, preceded by a "leading zero".Example : 0XXXYYYYY
- 0 : Leading zero
- YYY : Institution Number
- XXXXX : Branch Number
MICR Number (Transit Number)
MICR Numbers or widely known as Transit Numbers are used in cheques processing. It appears on the bottom of negotiable instruments such as checks identifying the financial institution on which it was drawn.A paper (MICR) routing number is comprised of a three-digit financial institution number and a five-digit branch number. It is encoded using magnetic ink on paper payment items (such as cheques).
Example : XXXXX-YYY
- XXXXX : Branch Number
- YYY : Institution Number
Payments Canada
The Financial Institutions Branch Directory (FIBD) provides routing numbers and addresses for branches of all Canadian financial institutions.
Information in the FIBD is drawn from Payments Canada’s Financial Institutions File (FIF) database and is updated weekly, based on information received from members. The FIF is also available on a subscription basis. It offers enhanced functionality for frequent users and can be imported in a variety of business applications. For more information, you can reach out to your Member institution or read more about the FIF and routing numbers.
Tips for Using the FIBD:
- For each branch, routing numbers are provided in two formats: one for electronic payments, and the other for MICR-encoded paper payment items.
- The Geographical List is organized by municipality. Use it to find the branch routing number when the location of the branch is known. Consult the Payments Canada Member List to confirm the name of the financial institution, if necessary.
- Use the Numeric List to find the branch address when the routing number is known.

TD Canada Trust Branch and ATM

Very slow at serving people at the teller. Always long lines and takes forever for them to get through customers. Not efficient
Apparently tellers are unable to help people opening a new bank account. I had to make an appointment because the only person able to accomplish this delicate and complicated job was the man I was talking to & he was too busy. There was no one else there waiting for him & he walked into an empty office after our conversation. When I needed to book another appointment I called & left a message, and again the next day and the next- no response. I will be going elsewhere for "personal" banking.

Let us help you access your Direct Deposit / Debit information easily.
Your account number and branch/transit number
If you have a cheque, your full account information is found along the bottom. View this sample cheque image as a handy guide. We also have a direct deposit/debit form.
If you do NOT have a cheque, you can locate your account information in Easyweb on the View Account page.
The first set of numbers (4 digits) is your branch (or transit) number. The second set (7 digits) is your accountnumber.
- If your account number only has 6 digits but a form requires 7, simply add a 0 to the start. For example, 123456 is 0123456.
- If your branch (transit) number is only 3 digits long, add a 0 in front of the number (for forms, etc.). Example: Branch 101 is 0101.
If you need to enter a 5 digit branch (transit) number for a direct deposit or debit form, the 5th digit is a geographical number to be added to the end of your branch (transit) number. View a sample cheque image that identifies branch (transit) numbers, including the 5th digit.
If you don’t have a cheque, find the 5th digit of your branch (transit) number based on your geographical location:
- British Columbia and Yukon: 0
- Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut: 9
- Saskatchewan: 8
- Manitoba and North-Western Ontario: 7
- Eastern Ontario including Ottawa and surrounding area: 6
- Ontario including Toronto and surrounding area: 2
- Western Quebec including Montreal and surrounding area: 1
- Eastern Quebec including Labrador: 5
- New Brunswick: 4
- Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland (excluding Labrador): 3
For example: If you are located in Toronto and your branch number is 1001, you should input 10012 if your direct deposit/debit form requires a 5th digit.
Institution Number: The institution number for all TD Canada Trust accounts is 004.
