Oglesby named Security State's new president
PECOS, December 7, - W.H. "Bill" Oglesby was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Security State Bank today, succeeding longtime president Dudley Montgomery.Patrick Kennedy, Chairman of the Board of the year-old institution, made the announcement of the selection of Oglesby this morning at the bank. Oglesby has been a vice-president at Security State for the past 13 years.
"I'm excited about this opportunity," Oglesby said. "I'm honored to be able to continue the type of leadership our customers and employees have come to expect."
Oglesby was born and raised in Pecos and has been a lifelong resident. He graduated from Pecos High School in and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Angelo State University. He is a graduate of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University and has been with Security State Bank for the past thirteen years of his 26 years in banking. Prior to that, he worked at First National Bank in Pecos.
"In these innovative times of banking, there is no doubt that improvement and progress are in the future," Oglesby said. "Our hope is that we can help Pecos prosper as well."
Oglesby has also served as President of the Downtown Lion's Club, Chairman of the Salvation Army Unit, President and Director of Pecos Chamber of Commerce, Pecos Valley Country Club, American Cancer Society - Pecos Division, and Pecos Aquatic Club. He and his wife Karen have two boys, Will and Matthew.
"We are very pleased that Bill agreed to accept this position of leadership in the Bank," Kennedy said. "Bill is a person of high integrity and has a great depth of experience in the banking business. He is well known and well liked in the community. He understands Pecos and its people and will continue to serve their banking investment and trust needs."
Montgomery is retiring from Security State Bank after spending 41 years working for the institution. He will remain on the Board of Directors, Kennedy said.
The Bank will honor Montgomery and his wife Patty at a holiday reception on Friday, Dec. 15, and at a special dinner that evening.
City officials attend TML conference

PECOS, December 7, - Town of Pecos City officials and Pecos Mayor Ray Ortega were among several thousand people who attended the 88th Texas Municipal League Annual Conference last in Austin.
Along with Ortega, interim City Manager Octavio Garcia, Finance Director Steve McCormick, Fire Chief Roy Pena, City Secretary Geneva Martinez and Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Lupe Nieto attended the four-day conference that offered the chance for city officials from over 1, Texas Municipal League cities to meet and attend workshops.
"We learned a lot," Ortega said. "We all went and had a good time."
The municipal officials were able to attend "pretty in-depth courses of what affects municipal government," according to Ortega.
Martinez explained that many different courses pertaining to each position in government were offered to all the officials.
"Each one has full body workout at home without equipment for men own sessions," she said.
"It was informational," she said. "All the classes were very interesting."
Ortega said he met with many mayors from across the state and talked to many of them about different issues that come up in municipal government.
"You get to meet with a lot of people," he said. "You get to network and find out what other cities are doing with different issues."
Conference delegates also had the opportunity to hear speeches by Lieutenant Governor of Texas Rick Perry and noted American journalist Neal Pierce.
Ortega said about 1, vendors were open at the convention hall so the officials would be able to pick-up information about various companies and issues.
Ortega said members of the Pecos City government try to attend at least two different conferences a year in order to obtain new information that would benefit the municipal government.
"You've got to go and see what's out there to bring it back here and see if it works," he said.
WTNB holds Open House for new name, ATM

PECOS, December 7, - West Texas National Bank will be celebrating its name change at the addition of the bank's new automatic teller machine on Friday with an Open House from 1 to 5 p.m.
A grand opening for the ATM will be part of the event, after workers completed construction and paving of the new driveway at Seventh and Cedar streets.
President John Grant said employees from the bank would be outside greeting new and old customers while serving hot dogs and drinks. Giveaways and raffles are also a part of Friday's events.
Helium balloons will be released, which will contain giveaway certificates in a few of them. Whoever finds those certificates can redeem them at the bank to receive a prize, Grant said.
Entertainment is also a part of the plans for Friday's big day at the bank, weather permitting.
Employees will also be on hand to sign up new accounts and allow current customers to order an ATM card if they do not have one now, or they can come in and order ATM cards right away if they do not want to wait until next week.
New signs went up a week ago on Cedar Street, changing the name of the year-old First National Bank to West Texas National Bank. The change was made after FNB merged with other First National Banks in Alpine, Seminole, Denver City, Crane, Kermit and Terlingua earlier this year.
New signs will go up on the bank's Oak Street side in the near future, as part of remodeling work on the drive-through windows.
Grant said the ATM would be available for customer use next week and is not restricted to WTNB customers.
"The ATM can be used by non-customers," he said.
Anyone who has an ATM, debit or credit card with a valid PIN number would be able to use the machine. "Their account, wherever it is, can be billed for that amount," Grant said.
The drive-thru windows will soon have new hours; 8 a.m p.m., Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m p.m., on Fridays.

Oglesby was born and raised in Pecos and has been a lifelong resident. He graduated from Pecos High School in and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Angelo State University. He is a graduate of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University and has been with Security State Bank for the past thirteen years of his 26 years in banking. Prior to that, he worked at First National Bank in Pecos.
"In these innovative times of banking, there is no doubt that improvement and progress are in the future," Oglesby said. "Our hope is that we can help Pecos prosper as well."
Oglesby has also served as President of the Downtown Lion's Club, Chairman of the Salvation Army Unit, President and Director of Pecos Chamber of Commerce, Pecos Valley Country Club, American Cancer Society - Pecos Division, and Pecos Aquatic Club. He and his wife Karen have two boys, Will and Matthew.
"We are very pleased that Bill agreed to accept this position of leadership in the Bank," Kennedy said. "Bill is a person of high integrity and has a great depth of experience in the banking business. He is well known and well liked in the community. He understands Pecos and its people and will continue to serve their banking investment and trust needs."
Montgomery is retiring from Security State Bank after spending 41 years working for the institution. He will remain on the Board of Directors, Kennedy said.
The Bank will honor Montgomery and his wife Patty at a holiday reception on Friday, Dec. 15, and at a special dinner that evening.
City officials attend TML conference

PECOS, December 7, - Town of Pecos City officials and Pecos Mayor Ray Ortega were among several thousand people who attended the 88th Texas Municipal League Annual Conference last in Austin.
Along with Ortega, interim City Manager Octavio Garcia, Finance Director Steve McCormick, Fire Chief Roy Pena, City Secretary Geneva Martinez and Assistant Emergency Management Coordinator Lupe Nieto attended the four-day conference that offered the chance for city officials from over 1, Texas Municipal League cities to meet and attend workshops.
"We learned a lot," Ortega said. "We all went and had a good time."
The municipal officials were able to attend "pretty in-depth courses of what affects municipal government," according to Ortega.
Martinez explained that many different courses pertaining to each position in government were offered to all the officials.
"Each one has their own sessions," she said.
"It was informational," she said. "All the classes were very interesting."
Ortega said he met with many mayors from across the state and talked to many of them about different issues that come up in municipal government.
"You get to meet with a lot of people," he said. "You get to network and find out what other cities are doing with different issues."
Conference delegates also had the opportunity to hear speeches by Lieutenant Governor of Texas Rick Perry and noted American journalist Neal Pierce.
Ortega said about 1, vendors were open at the convention hall so the officials would be able to pick-up information about various companies and issues.
Ortega said members of the Pecos City government try to attend at least two different conferences a year in order to obtain new information that would benefit the municipal government.
"You've got to go and see what's out there to bring it back here and see if it works," he said.
WTNB holds Open House for new name, ATM

PECOS, December 7, - West Texas National Bank will be celebrating its name change at the addition of the bank's new automatic teller machine on Friday with an Open House from 1 to 5 p.m.
A grand opening for the ATM will be part of the event, after workers completed construction and paving of the new driveway at Seventh and Cedar streets.
President John Grant said employees from the bank would be outside greeting new and old customers while serving hot dogs and drinks. Giveaways and raffles are also a part of Friday's events.
Helium balloons will be released, which will contain giveaway certificates in a few of them. Whoever finds those certificates can redeem them at the bank to receive a prize, Grant said.
Entertainment is also a part of the plans for Friday's big day at the bank, weather permitting.
Employees will also be on hand to sign up new accounts and allow current customers to order an ATM card if they do not have one now, or they can come in and order ATM cards right away if they do not want to wait until next week.
New signs went up a week ago on Cedar Street, changing the name of the year-old First National Bank to West Texas National Bank. The change was made after FNB merged with other First National Banks in Alpine, Seminole, Denver City, Crane, Kermit and Terlingua earlier this year.
New signs will go up on the bank's Oak Street side in the near future, as part of remodeling work on the drive-through windows.
Grant said the ATM would be available for customer use next week and is not restricted to WTNB customers.
"The ATM can be used by non-customers," he said.
Anyone who has an ATM, debit or credit card with a valid PIN number would be able to use the machine. "Their account, wherever it is, can be billed for that amount," Grant said.
The drive-thru windows will soon have new hours; 8 a.m p.m., Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m p.m., on Fridays.

Second major drug bust of week at Sierra Blanca
PECOS, December 7, - U.S. Border Patrol agents at Sierra Blanca made their second large drug bust in three days on Wednesday, after discovering a half-ton of marijuana inside a truck headed east on Interstate 10 which brought this week's seizures to over $ million.According to Border Patrol officials in Marfa, 1, pounds of marijuana was seized by agents just before midnight at the Sierra Blanca Checkpoint on I in Hudspeth County. A canine alerted to the back portion of a tractor-trailer driven by a naturalized United States Citizen from Trinidad.
Total value of the marijuana was put at $, The driver was arrested on drug smuggling charges and the marijuana and truck-tractor were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Border Patrol agents also seized a loaded pistol during the search, the report said.
The arrest occurred two days after agents arrested two other people who were traveling on a bus headed from California to Tennessee, after 14 pounds of cocaine was found inside a bag belonging to them, located in the bus' luggage compartment. Luncheon to honor Bunton scheduled Friday
PECOS, December 7, - A luncheon will be held to honor longtime U.S. District Court Judge Lucius D. Bunton III in Midland on Friday.Bunton, who stepped down earlier this year as Senior United States District Judge for health reasons, will be honored at a luncheon from a.m. until 1 p.m., on Friday, at the George Mahon Federal Courthouse, 3rd Floor Jury Room, in Midland.
Bunton will be honored for his 21 years of service on the federal bench.
