Good Morning No filter needed this morning! Open today
The Brass Compass
We are closed today but reopen tomorrow morning at am. There’s been a lot of questions and confusion about what’s happening. We are closing the Brass Compass on November 1 and our breakfast staff will be offering breakfast at Archer’s on the Pier mid November after a 2 week break. We are working on the menu - it will not be exactly the same but we are definitely keeping the favorites. We appreciate the support and love and we hope to see you one more time before our closing date!!
The Brass Compass
Another day, another lobster club! Come get a lobster club from Brass Compass before we move to archers! We will miss you all and our little spot on Main Street. All of the wonderful people we’ve met along the way made it an amazing experience! But here’s to happy changes and keeping things going. We’re beyond thankful for all the positive comments and optimism we’ve been receiving from all of our customers. Thank you for sticking with us and staying #brasscompassstrong. See you tomorrow at sharp

Have you ever thought of yourself as a "regular" in a cafe or diner? Are you a little bit like Norm from Cheers? This is something entirely familiar to me, since I waited table at Lottie's Restaurant in York Village, Maine. I was the same folks every day, heard them laughing and bickering over one of Lottie's homemade pies or a BLT. I knew exactly when certain men would show up, sit together at a booth or a back table.I heard them discuss what was happening in town, in the world. Their candor was refreshing and insightful. I probably heard more than a 15 year old girl needed to hear. But what has lingered is not the topics. It is the idea that everyone has a someplace.
The someplace of this collection is a small cafe in downtown Rockland, Maine. I spent countless mornings there, gathering in the flavors and conversations of this little seaside city and its people, many of whom fit the regulars description. A huge part of any hometown eatery is the serving staff. The girls at the Brass Compass and their customers made my work as a poet easy. As a chronicler of flavor (food and otherwise) I had a nearly limitless menu of ideas and incidents.
The book takes readers on a morning pilgrimage to this little city's inner personality. Grab a cup of coffee and order something. Settle in with these poems.
Carol Willette Bachofner's poems are sacred poetry that exults in the senses. Fine-etched, delicate diction combines with passionate natural imagery to offer us lovely work that, poem after poem, affirms life, whether the subject is an Andrew Wyeth painting, love, sleep, the body of a bird, a shadow, a statue of Edna St Vincent Millay, or a tavern menu with all its luscious detail.

The Menu
Regulars don’t even read it:
Sailor’s Breakfast is two of everything,
eggs [how do ya want ‘em, deah?]
sausage links,french toast, thick
slices of Lynn’s homemade white,
bacon crisp as a fall afternoon.
Pumpkin ginger pancakes
with local syrup, boiled this spring
in the sugar house just down the road,
sweet blueberry muffins (not the cultivated
kind of berry from the grocery store), classic
eggs benedict, or Matinicus with crab cake.
Lobster roll or lobster club, a specialty
of the house, whoopie pies
for dessert or to take along
for tomorrow’s picnic. Brimmed cups
of lobster stew or clam chowda,
butter floating on the surface like sunshine.
Eat outside or in, everything depends on weather,
which is coming in or going out
in the harbor. Traffic rolls down Main Street,
missing jaywalkers by inches. Traffic cops mark
the two-hour limit with chalk. Think where
you have to go when your meal is done. Wipe your chin.

Ok, the Blues Festival is over. Today, I went to the Brass Compass for breakfast (went yesterday too). Those of you who know me well, know my passion for Eggs Benedict. Well, of course, I ordered them but got the lobster version. I must say, I haven't experienced anything better! The eggs cooked to perfection, the hollandaise sauce was perfect and homemade too! English muffins cooked just right, not too little not to much. Just right to not get too soggy from the flow of the perfectly poached eggs, once they were broken! Overflowing from under the eggs was a huge portion of lobster that was warm and delightful to my pallet. The four images below shows the progression of consumption and the perfection of the meal as it disappeared. The lobster lasted till the end. The cup of fresh fruit accompanying the meal was very tasty and had a big variety of fruits! I can see myself driving here from Bucksport (48 miles) more often. Also of note, this place (The Brass Compass) won a throw down with Bobby Flay. The owner and head chef beat him in a Lobster club sandwich competition. It was on the food channel network. If you're ever in Rockland, stop by and enjoy a piece of heaven!

ROCKLAND — One of the laws passed, and one of the licenses renewed during the Monday, April 13, Rockland City Council meeting prompted some breath-holding.
The ordinance request allowing a third brass compass rockland maine in Buoy Park was unanimously favored by all members of the council. This allowance effectively jump-starts operations of Malcolm Bedell’s mobile food trailer, ‘Wich Please, in 30 days.
But it was a little dicey at the start, when Mayor Frank Isganitis recused himself from the vote, having bought a couple fundraiser T-shirts to help with Bedell’s campaign. That action was followed by Brass compass rockland maine Louise MacLellan-Ruf’s reclusion, as she, too, had purchased a T-shirt.
Had any of the other councilors purchased T-shirts, the law may not have passed. But it did.
Brass Compass outdoor dining license renewal
Each year, for the past eight years, the Brass Compass Café on Main Street has obtained a seasonal renewal license allowing use of a small portion of Winslow-Holbrook Memorial Park for outdoor dining. This year, two stepped to the podium during public comment, suggesting councilors are disrespecting the war dead, and disregarding the feelings of relatives by renewing the outdoor seating license for the Brass Compass.
Gaye and Roberta Best expressed fears that the general public wouldn’t be allowed to use the park, and that the Brass Compass would encroach upon general access areas.
The Bests are descendants of Albert Holbrook, one of the first two young Rockland soldiers to die in World War I.
Gaye Best told council of a petition signed by 80 people during a ceremony in the park last year.
Because the Bests made their comments during the public podium time, councilors could not respond immediately. Twenty minutes later councilors were able to clarify a few things.
MacLellan-Ruf said: “I just want to really reiterate my deep respect for the veterans; my family is inundated with them. I have discussed this with other veterans and none of them feel that it is disrespectful in the least.”
According to MacLellan-Ruf, the park was originally called Winslow-Holbrook Square, “which is very different from Winslow-Holbrook Memorial Park.”
MacLellan-Ruf believes that the original placard was in the middle of Brass compass rockland maine Street, and that only recently “did that become the issue point.”
She also stated that many of the 80 names on the petition were from non-residents.
However, MacLellan-Ruf also pointed out that owner and chef Lynn Archer has taken care of the park, planting her own flowers and picking up garbage at Winslow-Holbrook Memorial Park.
The Brass Compass Café license, which allows for 10 feet of public space, was renewed.
Also acted upon during the council session:
New floats at Snow Marine Park — The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry has provided a Grant-in-Aid to the City of Rockland. The Bureau farmers grain of central illinois nine 6 ft. x 16 ft. wooden boarding floats for use at Snow Marine Park. Three of these floats will be available this year. The other six will be available in the spring of
These floats will be open for the general public to brass compass rockland maine for outdoor boating recreation, according to a letter from the bureau.
Councilor Larry Pritchett pointed out that the pilings which these new floats would be attached to are no longer standing. City Manager James Chaousis will look into the matter.
Reconveyances will be open to public comment May 11 at 7 p.m. for the following properties:
First Street, 24 Jefferson Street, 19 Franklin Street, 26 Rockland Street, and First Street.

Still a good place but we have experienced a few disappointing things in our last 3 visits. Not bad enough to stop going, just not as good as good as it always had been.

We had brunch here and I ordered the lobster Benedict and my husband order the lobster club. They were both super satisfying, and huge. Service was great too. I felt like the people who worked their treat each other like family.
