Curcumin

Echinacea

Research suggests echinacea could help you keep future colds away.

Garlic

Research is still limited, but it’s possible that the allicin in garlic kills off germs and prevents colds or keeps them from getting worse.

Search the internet for sunburn remedies and you'll find plenty of creative ideas. One remedy people like to recommend is using vinegar to get rid of your sunburn.

But is this remedy effective, and more importantly, safe? Absolutely not. Here's what you need to know.

Why you should not use vinegar for sunburn 

Due to its acidity, vinegar can be dangerous when used on sunburnt skin says Carol Cheng, MD, dermatologist and assistant clinical professor at the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. 

Most kinds of vinegar, like apple cider vinegar and white vinegar, have a pH level between 2 and 3, making them highly acidic. Applying these on a sunburn can "damage the already compromised skin barrier" says Cheng. This can result in more severe pain, inflammation, and delayed healing. 

Vinegar also contains ingredients like acetic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and malic acid. According to Cheng, applying these on sensitive skin, "may lead to a serious chemical burn."

Moreover, if your sunburn is severe like if you've developed sunburn blisters or open wounds, applying vinegar would be even more painful and you should steer clear of using it in this situation as well. 

Better ways to treat sunburn

There are plenty of safer, more effective ways to tend to your sunburn. Cheng recommends the following remedies:

  • Aloe: Use aloe vera gel or moisturizers that have aloe in them. Aloe is great for sunburns because it reduces inflammation, moisturizes skin, and stimulates collagen production for healing. However, you should steer clear of aloe products that have added pain relievers, which can actually irritate skin more or cause an allergic reaction. The American Academy of Dermatology says these ingredients end in "-caine" and  benzocaine is one of the most common ones. 
  • NSAIDs: Over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) help reduce pain and inflammation in the body. If you're sunburnt, you'll likely be dealing with both.  Ibuprofen and Aspirin are the most popular ones.
  • Cool showers: Taking your beloved hot shower or bath will likely make your skin feel even worse, as well as dry it out. Instead, opt for cool water showers or baths to feel some relief. You can also use cold compresses, dampening a towel or cloth with cold water and applying it to the affected area.
  • Stay hydrated: Sunburn as well as being out in the hot sun can cause you to become dehydrated, so make sure to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated so your body can heal.

5 benefits of apple cider vinegar (and a few duds), according to experts

What are the real benefits of apple cider vinegar, according to science? CNN asked seven experts and looked at dozens of studies to bring you the facts.
Here arefive ways apple cider (or any vinegar) can help your health -- plusa few popular misconceptions that didn't pass muster.

1. It can lower blood sugar

What's the most popular use for apple cider vinegar? If a simple internet search is any measure, it involves diabetes.
Registered dietitian Carol Johnston has been studying the effects of acetic acid, the main component of vinegar, on diabetic blood glucose levels, since
No vinegar, including apple cider, has been shown in studies to significantly alter or prevent diabetes, said Johnston, a professor of nutrition and an associate dean in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University.
"If I was to show that vinegar slows progression to diabetes, then I would need hundreds of people and millions of dollars to do the studies, because diabetes has a lot of causes, including genetics," Johnston said.
But studies do show acetic acid can be used as one tool in helping people lower blood sugar. A randomized clinical trial found "a 10 point decrease in fasting glucose concentrations," Johnston said. "They used two 'spoons' of vinegar in a glass of water twice a day (with the lunch and dinner meals)."
In Johnston's research, the people who benefited most from the use of vinegar were insulin-resistant, a condition called prediabetes.
"In those with prediabetes, it was too good to be true," she said. "It fell a good bit and stayed that way. It may be this is the group that could benefit the most."
It's not just apple cider -- the antiglycemic response can be induced by any sort of vinegar: red and white wine vinegars, pomegranate vinegar or even white distilled vinegar.
But, it only worked in the presence of a starch, she stressed.
"Basically, what acetic acid is doing is blocking the absorption of starch," Johnston said. "If my study subjects eat a starch and add vinegar, blood glucose will go down. But if they drink sugar water and add vinegar, nothing happens. So if you're having bacon and eggs, don't bother. It only helps if you are consuming a starch."
If you choose to use apple cider vinegar, be sure to tell your doctor, said registered dietitian and CNN contributor Lisa Drayer.
"If you're taking a diabetes drug, the vinegar could amplify the effects of your meds," she warned, "and your doctor might want to adjust your dosage."

2. It can help -- a bit -- with weight loss

The most cited study was done with heavy but otherwise healthy Japanese subjects. The week treatment produced lower body weight, body mass index, visceral fat, waist measurements and triglyceride levels. Sounds great, right?
"People didn't really lose that much weight," Drayer said. "Only 2 to 4 pounds in three months over a placebo. That's only a third of a pound a week."
Johnston agreed the study showed "a very, very modest weight loss. In fact, I would say most people who are on a diet for 12 weeks and only lose a couple of pounds aren't going to be very happy."
The best way to consume apple cider vinegar is on your salad, experts say.
If you are using apple cider or other vinegars as one part of an overall plan, combining it with a healthy diet, portion control and exercise, it might help, Drayer said. She suggested using balsamic vinegar on salads, in a ratio with oil, or adding it to sauces for poultry and fish.
"If you were doing all the other things to lose weight, it might give you a slight edge. Also, if you're drinking it in water, that's good, as water makes you feel full," Drayer said.
"Sometimes, people get really excited to try something new, and then their other behaviors change, too," she added. "If this helps people be more careful overall, that's a good thing."
But be careful. A paper published last year by Johnston found vinegar can erode tooth enamel. If you do take vinegar for blood sugar, "this stresses the importance of taking the vinegar in a diluted form and with a meal to minimize this effect," Johnston said, adding that "drinking through a straw might even be better!"

3. It's a food preservative

Used for centuries to preserve food items such as pickles and pig's feet, vinegar is now becoming popular as a natural preservative in processed meat and poultry items as well.
Most home pickling uses 5% distilled white vinegar because it doesn't affect the color of the vegetables or fruits, but apple cider vinegar is a popular choice because of its mellow, fruity flavor. Do know, however, that it will turn most fruits and veggies dark.
Another popular use for apple cider and other vinegars is as a food wash to reduce bacteria or viruses on the surface of fruits and vegetables. Studies have had varying results, often depending on the type of fruit or vegetable and the amount of time spent in the vinegar solution.
Canada's National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health says vinegars "may damage the organoleptic properties of produce," or how they taste and smell, and has "limited antimicrobial efficacy."

4. It helps mosquito and bug bites

The internet got this right: Apple cider vinegar is good to ease the sting or itch of bug bites.
"I do love it for bites, especially mosquito bites," said dermatologist Dr. Marie Jhin, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Dermatology.
"It's a very underutilized home remedy. If you have a lot of bites, put two cups in a full tub of water and soak. It will help with itching," she said.
The internet also touts apple cider vinegar as a treatment for skin infections and acne, a way to fight lice and dandruff, as a natural wart remover or an anti-aging treatment.
"It will dry out a pimple, but it's not an anti-aging method," Jhin said. "I wouldn't recommend it. We have much more effective and safe methods today than this."
While it can help with sunburn, there are many other good remedies so "we don't usually suggest that to patients," Jhin said.
Don't turn to it to get rid of head lice or warts, either. One study found vinegar to be the least effective natural method to eliminate lice, and as for warts, they "are caused by a virus, so there's no cure," Jhin explained.
"You can dab a diluted version of apple cider vinegar on a wart with a Q-tip, and it's going to help remove dead skin, which is what we do in the office by paring it down, cutting it out or burning it with liquid nitrogen. But it's not going to be as fast or effective as what we do in the office," she said.
American Academy of Dermatology spokesperson Dr. Michael Lin, director of the Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute in Beverly Hills, has a more negative perspective on home use.
"I've had quite a few patients harmed by apple cider vinegar," Lin explained. "One terrible example was a man trying to treat genital warts. When he came into the office, the entire area was raw, burned by the vinegar.
"I don't know if he was using it full strength, but whatever he was doing it was too strong," he continued. "He probably has permanent scarring from that natural home treatment."
Lin said he feels more comfortable recommending distilled white vinegar, as it is created to a standardized formulation of 5% acidity.
"With apple cider vinegar, you don't know what strength you're getting," Lin said. "It depends on the brand, and even among batches within a brand, you could get different concentrations of acidity."
"If you do choose to use apple cider vinegar, try to buy a name brand that clearly labels the acidity level. And whatever you do, don't use it full strength."
He suggested a ratio.

5. It can be an all-purpose cleaner

Because of apple cider vinegar's antimicrobial properties, it is often suggested as a natural cleanser for the home.
The acid is effective against mold, but according to the Pesticide Research Institute, an environmental consulting firm, so are salt, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil and baking soda.
Many of those also smell better.
Apple cider vinegar is biodegradable, and because of its low pH, it's great against alkaline grime such as hard water and mineral deposits, as well as soap scum.
Apple cider and other vinegars are used by some as a food wash to reduce the number of bacteria or virus on fruits or vegetables.
But it won't cut grease. Why not? Just think of a simple oil and vinegar salad dressing. After mixing, the oil and vinegar quickly separate because oil is nonpolar, while vinegar and water are polar, meaning they are not attracted to each other.
Will apple cider or other vinegars sanitize or disinfect your home? Probably not enough to make you feel germ-free.
This study showed that undiluted vinegar had some effect on E. coli and salmonella, but a study conducted in showed no real impact against E. coli or S. aureus, the common staphylococcus bacteria responsible for most skin and soft tissue infections.
That study also showed vinegars to be quite effective against the waterborne bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, mostly found in hospitals and untreated hot tubs. It was also effective against Salmonella enterica, a rare pig-borne version of salmonella.
If you do choose to use a vinegar to clean your home, never mix it with bleach or ammonia, because it will create toxic chlorine or chloramine gases.
It's a no for coughs and sore throats. The use of vinegar medicinally starts with the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates. He would mix it with honey and use it for chronic coughs and sore throats, and the suggestion continues today across the internet.
Many parents might think this is a natural and safe option for their children. The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't have an official stance on the use of apple cider or other vinegars as a health aid, but spokeswoman Dr. Jennifer Shu urges caution.
"I would just think that the vinegar would irritate the throat even more," said Shu, an Atlanta pediatrician and author of "Food Fights." "But diluting it and mixing it with other ingredients such as salt or honey might decrease any pain that the vinegar might cause."
Arizona State's Johnston cautions against trying any vinegar straight, because of the risk of inhaling the liquid and damaging the lungs.
"Vinegar has that strong smell and puckering taste, so if you take a breath, you could inhale it into your lungs as you swallow," she said. "It can burn the lungs a little, because it is an acid."
"It can also burn your esophagus," said Dr. Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention at National Jewish Health in Denver. "And if you're predisposed to reflux, ulcers or stomach problems, it could certainly make those worse."
It's a double NO for teeth cleaning and whitening. "Some people like to use it to remove stains and whiten their teeth," according to one of many online articles touting apple cider vinegar for this purpose.
"I let out an audible gasp when I read about this! It made me cringe, to be honest with you," said Chicago dentist and American Dental Association spokesperson mynewextsetup.us Boghosian. "You're putting acid on your teeth, the last thing you'd want to do to promote oral health."
A pH of 7 is neutral, and anything less is acid, Boghosian said, adding that many of today's popular apple cider vinegars are in the 2 to 3 pH range -- about the same as stomach acid.
"Anything acidic which contacts your teeth will wear out the enamel, the protective coating, and that will cause cavities," Boghosian added. "This is totally, completely wrong, unless you want to be paying more visits to your dentist."
A healthier option would be to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes with a whitening toothpaste with the American Dental Association seal, she said. "That shows it's been tested to do what it's supposed to do."
Other articles promote rinsing your mouth with apple cider vinegar, soaking dentures with a diluted mixture or using it to clean a toothbrush.
"You just have to rinse off your toothbrush, get all the toothpaste out, and let it air out. That's all you have to do," Boghosian said. "Cleaning dentures or rinsing with vinegar is not a good idea. It, too, could put your teeth at risk. And just think how it might affect the metal on partial dentures."
Heart disease and cancer? Only if you're a rodent. If you're a rat worried about heart disease, put apple cider and other vinegars on your shopping list.
Studies show the vinegar can reduce blood pressure, triglycerides and total cholesterol in rodents fed a high-fat, cholesterol-rich diet. But full-blown studies have not been conducted in humans.
Freeman, who serves on the American College of Cardiology's prevention board, said there could be some benefit because of its antioxidant properties, like other heart-healthy fruits and vegetables, such as broccoli and blueberries.
"There are some indicators that using vinegar can improve arterial health and improve blood cholesterol, and there's even more power if combined with green leafy vegetables," Freeman said.
"The data is not particularly strong or overwhelming, but vascular health may be enhanced," Freeman said. "What's best to avoid heart disease is to exercise and eat a low-fat, plant-based diet."
Freeman further recommends using apple cider or other vinegars on salads to maximize the benefits and reduce any reactions to the acidity.
What about cancer? Japanese scientists have inhibited the growth of human leukemia and other cancer cells in petri dishes by exposing them to sugar cane vinegar and Japanese rice vinegar. Other studies showed a reduction in tumors and a prolonged life by adding rice vinegars to drinking water and food in rats and mice, respectively.
Studies in humans are nonexistent.
So, does apple cider vinegar measure up to its positive internet reputation? If you consider that almost any other vinegar will produce the same benefits, not so much.
There arealsosome serious downside, if used full strength and inappropriately. As the experts suggest, make sure you check with your doctor before giving it a try.
"When you do a search for apple cider vinegar, you see so many claims, and people will try it, searching for that natural cure-all," Drayer said.
"Whether any of those claims are based on science is another matter."

Try a Hot Bath + Epsom Salts

A salt-based exfoliator may be great for warding off ingrown hairs before they start for those with oilier or acne-prone skin. For ingrown hair on the body, like the legs or bikini area, soak in the tub with two cups of Epsom salt. "Taking a warm bath may open up the pores and relieve swelling and skin irritation," says Hayag.

Use Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is claimed to comprise anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties that work to soothe itchy, irritated skin. Black tea bags are also great for razor burns as they contain tannic acid, which helps to alleviate irritated skin. Though Hayag notes that more research about the topical application of ACV needs to be done, there may be certain benefits. "After shaving, there can be micro-cuts and irritation to the skin from which can be benefited by acetic acid, which is found in ACV. In addition, it also contains citric acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid. This may increase cell turnover and help unclog ingrown hairs."

Key Ingredients

Apple cider vinegar is fermented apple juice formed when yeast mixes with the sugar of the juice. It contains antibacterial properties.

Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, and dab a cotton ball in the solution. Apply the vinegar to the affected area, and let it dry naturally. While the vinegar is drying on the skin, dip a black tea bag into hot water for a few minutes. Remove the tea bag from the hot water and place it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes. Then, massage it into the affected area for a few minutes. Repeat several times a day for quick relief.

Note that apple cider vinegar and citric acid can be very irritating post-shave—particularly around the bikini line—and it is possible to give yourself a chemical burns from these ingredients. Wash the product off immediately if you experience any burning or stinging. Those with sensitive skin should avoid this method altogether.

Soften Skin with Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a great skin softener, and honey is known for its antibacterial properties. By combining both with an exfoliating substance, such as sugar, you can successfully scrape off excess dead skin cells without irritating your skin. “Because coconut oil is solid in cooler climates, it melts into the skin as a person applies it, which may feel soothing,” adds Hayag.

Mix four tablespoons of coconut oil with one tablespoon of honey, two tablespoons of brown sugar, and two tablespoons of white sugar. Apply the scrub to the affected area and let sit for 10 minutes. Wash the scrub off with warm water.

Calm Inflammation with Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil contains antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties, while olive oil has a rich fatty acid content that might help smooth the skin. Hayag recommends performing a patch test to make sure the tea tree oil doesn't cause further irritation.

Mix one tablespoon of olive oil with five drops of tea tree oil. Using a cotton ball, apply the mixture to the affected area. Let sit for 15 minutes and wash off with warm water.

Take an Oatmeal Bath

"Oatmeal baths are a traditional remedy for soothing the skin and relieving itchiness," says Hayag. "The starch and beta-glucan in oatmeal are protective and moisturizing. Oatmeal also contains phenols that have an anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effect.” You can soak in an oatmeal bath or mix with plain yogurt and honey to create a paste. The probiotics in yogurt may help restore the skin's protective barrier and increase hydration.

Mix equal portions of ground oatmeal and plain yogurt in a bowl. Next, add one teaspoon of honey to the mixture. Apply the paste to the affected area and let dry for about 30 minutes. Wash the paste off with warm water. Repeat twice a day for three days.

Cool Off with Cucumber and Milk

Not only do cucumbers have a cooling effect, but they also contain vitamin C, which aids in skin restoration. Milk may work to soothe the skin, thanks to its fat and protein content. "The combination of cucumber and milk may be able to provide moisture and a cooling effect to alleviate irritated skin from razor burn," says Hayag.

Key Ingredients

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient required for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body, including the skin, but we cannot produce it on our own. For the skin, it helps to boost collagen, lighten discoloration, and fight free radicals.

Peel one cucumber, add it to 1/4 cup of milk, and mix in a blender. Place the purée in the refrigerator for 10 minutes and then apply it to the affected area. Let sit for 10 minutes, and then wash the area with warm water.

Try This Strawberry Mixture

Strawberries may have anti-inflammatory properties that can help treat razor bumps, and the fats in the sour cream might help to coat and soothe the skin. "There still needs to be further research on whether it can be anti-inflammatory when applied topically. However, strawberries contain seeds that may be able to act as a physical exfoliant to combat razor burns," says Hayag, who notes that more research is necessary to confirm whether this is fully effective as a razor burn treatment.

If you want to try it out, mash a few strawberries with a small amount of sour cream, and mix properly. Apply the paste to the affected area, and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Wash the paste off with cold water, and pat dry.

Try a soothing gel to target ingrown hairs, razor bumps, razor burn, and redness. Hayag recommends Weleda Calendula Diaper Rash Cream or Shea Moisture Tea Tree Oil & Shea Butter After Shave Elixir ($8), which contains antimicrobial tea tree oil and witch hazel and soothing aloe and shea butter.

Key Ingredients

Shea butter is a plant lipid that comes from African shea tree nuts and is rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins. It's commonly used to help moisturize, nourish, and soothe the skin.

"Razor burn can cause a lot of redness and irritation that can lead to hyperpigmentation or scarring. In severe cases, it is best to seek professional help. However, when mild inflammation is present you can use an OTC steroid cream to reduce inflammation," Hayag adds.

14 Soothing Home Remedies for Sunburn

Natural sunscreen? Check! Long-sleeved swim shirts, hats, and a shady place to sip on fruit-infused water? Check, check and check! Whether it&#;s a trip to the beach or just time in our backyard, I&#;m very conscious about finding the &#;sweet spot&#; when it comes to time in the sun.

That&#;s because while too much sun exposure is definitely not good, neither is avoiding the sun entirely.

In this study&#; which tracked 30, Swedish women for 20 years &#; researchers found that those who avoided the sun had a twofold higher risk of early death than the group that got the most sun exposure. That&#;s not to say that overexposure is a good thing &#; it&#;s definitely something to avoid. With that said, sometimes sunburns happen, and with that in mind I&#;ve collected some sunburn home remedies just in case they&#;re needed.

14 Home Remedies for Sunburn

The sunburn remedies below come from respected doctors and herbalists. I&#;ve included links to studies that support their use along with explanations of why they work where applicable. I hope you find it helpful!

Note: Though the Mayo Clinic says most first and second degree burns can be treated at home, severe sunburns should be treated professionally. Please do not use any home remedies on serious burns.

Aloe vera plant

Aloe Vera

My grandmother&#;s favorite &#;owie balm&#; was a freshly plucked leaf from her aloe vera plant &#; turns out she was onto something!

According to Dr. Ian Tizard, a professor of immunology at Texas A&M University, aloe vera &#;comes out of the plant like a clear liquid, but when it touches human skin, it becomes a gel. It acts as a wound sealant in this gel state, and no other plants do so.&#; (1)

Apparently aloe contains a polysaccharide that is found in lots of plants, but it somehow works differently in this case.

&#;It seems to bind growth factors in wounds whereas normally they would be destroyed. Aloe vera polysaccharide seems to speed along the healing process much quicker,&#; he says.

Fresh aloe is preferred, because as the World Health Organization puts it aloe is sensitive to &#;enzymatic, oxidative, or microbial degradation.&#; (2) According to their medicinal plants portal, aloe vera gel &#;has been effectively used in the treatment of first- and second-degree thermal burns and radiation burns. Both thermal and radiation burns healed faster with less necrosis when treated with preparations containing Aloe Vera Gel (18, 19).&#;

If you&#;ve never grown fresh aloe, it&#;s very easy. Just keep it in a sunny window and follow these watering/repotting instructions.

To use: Break open a leaf and rub on skin.

Honey

As I mentioned in this post on remedies for small minor burns, there is a lot of research that supports the use of honey for soothing common kitchen burns, sunburns and more.

The sticky stuff&#;s been used as a topical burn salve since Egyptian days. &#;Studies suggest it may work better than some antibiotic creams at speeding up healing, reducing infection, and minimizing pain,&#; says Kathi Kemper, M.D., author of The Holistic Pediatrician.&#; (3)

It&#;s not my first choice for larger body application simply because it&#;s sticky, but it&#;s an option.

To use:This % manuka honey is sterilized specifically for use with mynewextsetup.us should be applied to the affected area and then covered with cotton gauze.

Witch Hazel

Made from the bark from the witch hazel tree, this extract is high in tannins that soothe sunburned skin. (4) I prefer this brand because they double distill their extract &#; the final extract contains 86% organic witch hazel. They also use less alcohol than other brands, which makes it more gentle.

How to use it: Place in a spray bottle and spray the affected area, or apply using a soft washcloth or cotton balls.

Apple cider vinegar and cotton balls

Apple Cider Vinegar

Though there is not a consensus on why this helps, this study did conclude that apple cider vinegar supports healing after a burn. Some say it is because the apple cider vinegar restores damaged skin&#;s pH, while other&#;s say it&#;s due to the high percentage of &#;pectin, succared, vitamins (B1, B2, B6) (A, E, C), salt, mineral[s such as] as (sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, phosphor, cobber, [and] silicon).&#; (5)

White vinegar is also considered helpful.

How to use it: One method is to add one cup of apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar) to tepid or cool bath water. Other methods include diluting it (either 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water, or equal amounts of vinegar and water) and spraying it directly on the skin, on or applying it as a cold compress with a soft washcloth.

Essential Oils

According to Medical Aromatherapy, German chamomile* (Matricaria chamomilla L) and lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) are both helpful for soothing sunburned skin. Another excellent option is helichrysum italicum.

Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) and rosemary ct. cineole (Rosmarinus officinalis) can also soothe because they create a cooling sensation on the skin, but they should not be used with small children &#; you can learn more in this guide to using essential oils safely with kids.

If you don&#;t have any of those available, these are considered good second tier options:

How to use them: Some oils &#; lavender, chamomile and tea tree, for example &#; can be safely used undiluted on occasion, provided the area of application is small.

However, in this instance it is recommended that they be diluted along with the others &#; somewhere between a % dilution is considered appropriate. If you&#;re new to diluting essential oils, thats drops per teaspoon of oil.

*Note: German chamomile should not be taken with certain drugs. See a list of them here.

**Note: Carrot seed essential oil should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Tea and cotton balls

Tea

Green tea contains catechins and black tea contains tannins, both of which are considered cooling for sunburns. They also contain theobromine, which may help ease discomfort and support healing. (8)

Peppermint tea &#; which contains essential oils high in menthol &#; can also create a gentle cooling sensation.

How to use: Brew a strong cup of tea and allow to cool. Apply using a soft washcloth or cotton balls. You can also brew the tea, allow it to cool completely, and then place the tea bags directly on the affected area.

Whole milk and cotton balls

Whole Milk

According to John F. Romano, M.D., clinical assistant professor of dermatology at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, the fat content of whole milk &#;makes it a great compress for sunburn pain.&#; (9)

How to use it: &#;Dip some gauze in whole milk and apply it to sunburned areas for about 20 minutes, repeating this process every two to four hours. Be sure to wash off the milk to avoid having your skin smell sour.&#; (9)

Baking soda

Baking Soda Bath

Seattle Children&#;s Hospital recommends 1/4 cup of baking soda in a bath to help with discomfort. Soap should be avoided as it can be irritating. (10)

To use: Add to tepid water and soak for minutes, then allow skin to air dry or gently pat it dry. Bathe once or twice per day as needed. (Personal note: Because baking soda is alkaline and healthy skin has a slightly acidic pH, it might be a good idea to follow the bath with a diluted vinegar spray to balance skin pH.)

Plantain

This common &#;weed&#; (which is not related to the banana-like tree) is sometimes called the &#;band aid&#; plant. Due to the presence of iridoids, it has a very soothing effect on skin. (11) It also contains allantoin, which supports skin healing. (12)

To use: You can make it into a salve or apply the leaves directly onto the affected area.

Epsom salt

Epsom Salt

Taz Bhatia, MD, founder and medical director of the Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine, recommends topically applying epsom salt to reduce irritation. (13) Though she didn&#;t mention it, I know a lot of people who are sensitive to epsom salts use magnesium chloride instead.

To use: &#;Dissolve 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt in 1 cup of water in a spray bottle, and then spray the mixture on the sunburn.&#; (13) Another option is to add cups of epsom salt/magnesium chloride to a tepid or cool bath. You could add a bit of lavender essential oil, too, if desired.

Here&#;s my favorite homemade bath salts recipe that incorporates lavender.

Calendula

Flavonoid-rich petals from the calendula flower have used in traditional medicine to soothe burns, cuts, bruises, etc. Several modern studies, including this one, have found it can be helpful in supporting burn healing.

How to use it: The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends calendula &#;as an ointment or a tea applied topically. To make tea from tincture, use 1/2 to 1 tsp. diluted in 1/4 cup water. You can also steep 1 tsp. of flowers in one cup of boiling water for 15 minutes, then strain and cool. Test skin first for any allergic reaction.&#; (14)

Another option is to use a calendula infused oil like this one. Before you get started, though, see the section on coconut oil below for a caveat on using oil-based remedies.

Turmeric Paste

This study found that turmeric paste has properties similar to honey in supporting wound healing. According to Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects, &#;Many South Asian countries use it as an antiseptic for cuts, burns, and bruises, and as an antibacterial agent.&#; (15)

How to use it: Mix turmeric with water, milk, or aloe vera until it forms a paste. Gently apply to skin and allow to sit for minutes. Rinse and pat dry.

Oatmeal

Soaking in a cool oatmeal bath can soothe skin and help with itching, says Patricia K. Farris, M.D., professor of dermatology at Tulane University in New Orleans. (16)

How to use: Grind one cup of oatmeal in a food processor or coffee grinder. Add to a tepid bath and soak for minutes. If sensitive to gluten, make sure to use gluten-free oatmeal.

Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Etc. (With a caveat)

While usually considered beneficial, moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can trap heat and delay healing for sunburned skin. It&#;s generally recommended that they be avoided until the skin is cool and healing is underway, although a small amount of oil used to dilute essential oils may be appropriate.

After the skin has cooled they are considered helpful for restoring lost moisture.

Sunburn Prevention Strategies

Of course, the best sunburn remedy is actually sun protection and prevention. Here&#;s what I do with my family:

  • For most outdoor activities, I prefer to protect our skin from excessive UV rays by using a cover up or other protective clothing like hats and rash guards.
  • We also make sure to find shade whenever possible. When it&#;s not, we bring it with us in the form of a tent or canopy.
  • We also use a mineral-based sunscreenwhen we&#;re going to be out in the sun longer than usual and shade is not an option. (This has happened on long boat rides.)

Should You Add Apple Cider Vinegar to Your Skin-Care Routine?

From avocado facials to honey scrubs, reaching into your kitchen cabinet in hopes of attaining clearer, smoother skin is nothing new. But does apple cider vinegar (ACV), another superfood ingredient, deserve a spot on your bathroom vanity?

If you’ve considered using this pantry staple to help treat acne or another skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, that isn’t surprising. The popularity of ACV has only grown in recent years, thanks to its reputation for healing common infections and wounds, or lowering blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, as some research shows. You should know that all those benefits haven’t been proved; long-term randomized controlled trials on the potential effects of ACV in humans are lacking, notes Harvard Medical School. (And, as UChicago Medicine points out, despite what you may have read online, ACV won’t cure cancer.)

When it comes to helping you achieve a healthier complexion, some of the components in ACV may help, but experts are cautious about the ingredient's use orally or infused in beauty products. Below we explore the possible benefits and risks.

What’s in Apple Cider Vinegar That May Offer Health Benefits?

“Apple cider vinegar is the new ‘it’ girl,” says Patricia Farris, MD, a clinical associate professor at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and a founder of Sanova Dermatology in Metairie, Louisiana. The vinegar, Dr. Farris says, is “being touted for medical benefits including controlling blood sugar, weight loss, and lowering blood pressure.”

Farris adds that vinegar has polyphenolic antioxidants, which may offer health benefits. ACV is high in pectin, a polysaccharide that occurs naturally in apples and may play a role in improving the skin’s barrier, according to a study published in January in Biomolecules & Therapeutics.

While human research on the potential benefits of ACV is limited, some people have experienced health benefits from the vinegar. According to UChicago, probiotics, nutrients, and the chemical compound acetic acid are the potentially beneficial parts of this rosy-hued vinegar. In ACV, the probiotic is the “mother” formed from the yeast and bacteria during fermentation. Probiotics are “good” bacteria that are also in foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Still, not just any bottle of ACV will boost your gut health. Abigail Waldman, MD, a dermatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, says that most ACV has the bacteria filtered out of it. And even when you can buy unfiltered or unpasteurized ACV that contains bacteria, there’s no guarantee that these bacteria contribute to healthy gut flora the way the aforementioned fermented foods might.

“ACV, like most fruits and vegetables, may serve as a prebiotic, providing the food for your gut flora to consume,” says Dr. Waldman, who is also an instructor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School.

How May Using Apple Cider Vinegar Help Improve Your Complexion?

A study published December in Natural Product Research suggests that ACV offers antifungal and antibacterial properties, but the research on how it may affect your complexion is lacking, says Melissa Piliang, MD, a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic. “There is really no good scientific evidence proving the [skincare] benefits of ACV [topically or orally], and it can be harmful,” she says, adding that it can help skin conditions if used cautiously and with supervision from a board-certified dermatologist.

There are a few things in ACV that may boost the appearance and health of your skin.

Acetic acid Research has shown this acid is antifungal and antimicrobial. When used topically, it clears bacteria that may be related to either infections or skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis (scalp eczema), and eczema.

Citric acid This is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA). AHAs are used to increase skin cell turnover, and have been shown to decrease wrinkles and age spots.

Acetic acid and citric acid are found in higher levels in ACV, but they are also found in other types of vinegar. White vinegar probably works as well for skin conditions as ACV does, Waldman says. “Doctors have been using vinegar soaks forever. The theory is that ACV has more citric acid, which might be where the hype is coming from, but a lot of the effects are overblown,” she says.

Can Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar Improve Your Health?

Drinking ACV has become popular as a way to improve gut health, but Dr. Piliang says that this benefit isn’t a sure thing. “Data suggests it, but we’re a ways from saying it will magically change your microbiome in a positive way. There are so many factors in what is in your microbiome and your gut,” she says.

So if you want to try it, manage your expectations. Farris recommends diluting it in water (1 tablespoon per cup of water) and drinking it as part of your daily routine.

To help mask the taste of ACV, a cup of tea, juice, or other nonalcoholic beverage can substitute for water for a flavorful alternative. The important thing is to avoid drinking ACV by itself, because in its pure form it has been associated with burns to the mouth and esophagus, and it can eat away at tooth enamel, according to a Dutch study published in December

Piliang says she’s seen reports of people having inflamed mucosa in their mouth, stomach, and esophagus from drinking ACV. “A tablespoon in a glass of water once a day is probably not going to do anything bad or good, but some people take things to the extreme,” she says.

Neither Waldman nor Piliang has heard of patients drinking ACV and successfully treating a skin condition.

Diluting Apple Cider Vinegar Is Key to Using It Safely

While Farris notes the potential benefits of consuming diluted ACV orally, she does not recommend applying pure ACV to your skin, as the acids in it may cause chemical burns and irritation, according to a June article in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology. “Putting it on the skin straight up is highly irritating, and I have seen many patients who have irritated and burned their skin by repeated use of apple cider vinegar. I advise patients against using this particular home remedy for this reason.”

For skin infections, Waldman advises making a dilution of 1 tablespoon of ACV per 1 cup of water. There’s a wide range of recommended concentrations, but it’s generally advisable to start there and see how much you can tolerate.

“The higher the concentration, the more likely it’s going to irritate your skin,” Waldman says. “But it probably also works better because of the higher levels of acetic and citric acid. It’s a balance. You never want to use ACV in its concentrated form.”

How Apple Cider Vinegar May Help Treat Skin Conditions

Many studies have examined how ACV affects the skin. But there is still little evidence that it has any benefit.

That&#;s because while too much sun exposure is definitely not good, neither is avoiding the sun entirely.

In this study&#; which tracked 30, Swedish women for 20 years &#; researchers found that those who avoided the sun had a twofold higher risk of early death than the group that got the most sun exposure. 14 Home Remedies for Sunburn

The sunburn remedies below come from respected doctors and herbalists. I&#;ve included links to studies that support their use along with explanations of why they work where applicable. I hope you find it helpful!

Aloe vera plant

Flavonoid-rich petals from the calendula flower have used in traditional medicine to soothe burns, cuts, bruises, etc. Several modern studies, including this one, have found it can be helpful in supporting burn healing.

How to use it: The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends calendula &#;as an ointment or a tea applied topically. To make tea from tincture, use 1/2 to 1 tsp. diluted in 1/4 cup water. You can also steep 1 tsp. of flowers in one cup of boiling water for 15 minutes, then strain and cool. Test skin first for any allergic reaction.&#; (14)

Another option is to use a calendula infused oil like this one. Before you get started, though, see the section on coconut oil below for a caveat on using oil-based remedies.

Turmeric Paste

This study found that turmeric paste has properties similar to honey in supporting wound healing. According to Herbal Medicine: Biomolecular and Clinical Aspects, &#;Many South Asian countries use it as an antiseptic for cuts, burns, and bruises, and as an antibacterial agent.&#; (15)

How to use it: Mix turmeric with water, milk, or aloe vera until it forms a paste. Gently apply to skin and allow to sit for minutes. Rinse and pat dry.

Sunburn Prevention Strategies

Of course, the best sunburn remedy is actually sun protection and prevention. Here&#;s what I do with my family:

  • For most outdoor activities, I prefer to protect our skin from excessive UV rays by using a cover up or other protective clothing like hats and rash guards.
  • We also make sure to find shade whenever possible. When it&#;s not, we bring it with us in the form of a tent or canopy.
  • We also use a mineral-based sunscreenwhen we&#;re going to be out in the sun longer than usual and shade is not an option. (This has happened on long boat rides.)
