The bank was founded in as a branch of the Second State Bank of Indiana and later became known as Terre Haute First National Bank. In , First Financial Corporation was established as the bank's holding company, and in August it became Indiana's first multi-bank holding company. The bank now operates in Indiana and Illinois. The Morris Plan Company of Terre Haute is a subsidiary of First Financial Corporation.[1] On September 27, , First Financial Corporation announced that the Morris Plan bank will be merged into First Financial Bank, effective December 31, [2]

On July 29, , First Financial Corporation announced completion of its merger with HopFed Bancorp, Inc. (HFBC) and the merger of First Financial Bank with HFBC’s wholly owned subsidiary, Heritage Bank USA.[3]

Under the terms of the merger agreement, shareholders of HFBC may elect to receive either (or a combination of) shares of First Financial common stock or $ in cash for each share of HFBC common stock owned, subject to proration provisions that provide for a targeted aggregate split of 50% of HFBC shares being exchanged for First Financial common stock and 50% for cash. Based upon First Financial’s closing price of $ per share on July 26, , and assuming that a shareholder received 50% stock and 50% cash, the shareholder would receive total consideration with an implied value of approximately $ per share, with an aggregate transaction value of approximately $ million.

As a result of the merger, First Financial Bank now operates 83 banking centers and five loan production offices serving Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Q. When can I expect to see additional changes?

A. Over the next couple months, we will be working to bring our technologies together so we can serve our customers most efficiently. We expect this will be completed in mid-December. At that time, your accounts and services will become similar accounts and services at First Financial. We will mail you a comprehensive Welcome Kit in advance with complete information and updates about banking at First Financial. Until then, continue to bank just as you do today.

Q. Can I still use my Hancock checks?

A. Yes, you should continue to use your current checks through December If you need additional checks, please reorder them just as you normally do.

Q. Will my account numbers remain the same?

A. Yes, account numbers will remain the same for now. In December, you'll receive a mailing with your new account number(s).  Please note, any accounts opened after August 20, will not receive new account numbers.  

Q. Can I continue to use my current debit or ATM card?

A. Yes, please continue to use your current Hancock Bank card. Just before we make the final transition to First Financial Bank in December , you’ll receive a new First Financial Bank card with full instructions on activating and using it.

Q. Will my direct deposits, automatic transfers, online bill payments and other electronic transactions continue?

A. Yes, these will all continue at this time. You will receive any important updates affecting your accounts prior to the final transition to First Financial.

Q. Should I continue to make my loan payments in the same way?

A. Yes, everything remains the same right now. Continue to make your payments in the same way you do today.

Q. Will my accounts continue to be covered by FDIC insurance?
