The Android emulator is dog slow. The x86 intel emulators only work with certain versions of OSX, otherwise they crash miserably.

Genymotion is apparently pretty good, so I’m giving that a shot.

Here’s how to do it.

Download and Install VirtualBox

Download VirtualBox + follow instructions to install.

Signup with Genymotion + Download installer

  • Go to and signup

  • Click the “Get Genymotion” button and download the appropriate version for your OS.

Run the Genymotion application

It will install Genymotion and Genmotion shell — run the Genymotion application (not the shell).

When you run it, you will see:


Click add new virtual device. It will ask you to login, then show you a list:


Pick the virtual device you want and it will download it.

Try starting a virtual device

Here’s what happened on my system:

  • Hit Play to run virtual device
  • It asked me to configure the Android SDK location, I said “No”
  • Then it gave me an error that VirtualBox was not installed
  • I started VirtualBox manually
  • I retried running the virtual device, this time it worked and I saw


Configure Android Studio plugin

Go to Preferences / Plugins and click “Browse Repositories”, then search for Genymotion. Right click and choose “Download and Install”.


Restart Android Studio and you should see a new icon in your IDE.


Click the icon and it will bring up Preferences, and choose the path to the Genymotion application.


Now if you click the Genymotion icon again, you will see the list of devices available:


Start an emulator

Click the Genymotion icon within Android studio, select a virtual device, and hit start.

It will ask you to choose the location of the SDK:


On Mac OSX, I was not able to brows to the path since the application was greyed out in the chooser dialog, so I went onto the shell and found it (/Applications/Android and just copied and pasted it:


Select a virtual device, and hit start (again). It should come up now.

Deploy an application/test to that emulator

In Android Studio, hit the “Play” or “Debug” button, and you should see the dialog that asks you to choose an emulator:


and one of the emulators will be the Genymotion emulator. After you choose that emulator and hit “OK”, it will run your application in the Genymotion emulator (this is showing the Grocery Sync demo app for Couchbase Lite):

When it comes to emulating Android on your desktop computer, Genymotion is hard to beat. It’s the next generation of the AndroVM open-source project, and simply makes it easy for both end users and developers to emulate various Android 4.x tablets and phones with ease.

You’ll need VirtualBox installed before you can use Genymotion, although there is a separate Windows build available that comes with it included.

Once installed, you’ll be prompted to sign up for a free account with Genymotion, which is mandatory before you can use the emulator. In time there will be a premium version of the software for advanced users, but the current feature set will always remain free to all.

After signing in, you’ll be presented with the launch screen – click Add to select (and download) an Android machine to emulate, with a wide range of generic and Nexus tablets and phones, covering various builds of Android Jellybean, to choose from. Downloads are typically a few hundred megabytes, but once done you’re ready to go.

Fire up your VM and you’re presented with a fully functional Android device running in a virtual window. Pick a model with the Google Play Store installed and you can happily test drive Android without having to pay a penny.

Genymotion includes some useful extra tools to help you navigate – all accessible down the right hand side of the screen. You can experiment with battery levels, switch on GPS and even link your webcam to the Android device. Tap and hold the power button in the bottom right-hand corner to access power options.

Let’s see how to set up the best possible Android development environment in Windows.

Download and install the preferred JDK version from here.

Android SDK

Visit the Android SDK website to download the SDK.

You have a two options to install the SDK.

  1. Download the SDK bundled with Eclipse IDE. But you still can bind it with another IDE.
  2. Download the SDK alone where you have the freedom of binding it with any other IDE.

I prefer the 2nd option since we’re going to install IntelliJ.

Then download the needed package and install it. And open the SDK manager (in the installation location) and install the APIs for your requirement.

If you downloaded the ADT (Android Developer Tools) bundle, you straight away can start developing. Since we’re using IntelliJ, we need a bit more work.

Go to the download page to download the community edition and install it.

After you install the IntelliJ IDEA, you can create a new Android project from File -> New Project. You may need to specify the JDK version and Android SDK path.

Now you’re ready. You simply can use the InjelliJ to do the coding and use the default emulator to run the apps. And that’s where the burden comes. I don’t have to tell you more how painful the Android emulator is. So Geny Motion is a cure.

GenyMotion + Virtual Box


GenyMotion is not actually a emulator, it is an interface to access an Android VM (hosted in Virtual Box). So it is super fast compared to the default emulator.

If you already have Virtualbox installed, you only need the GenyMotion. If you don’t have Virtualbox, you have to install the ready-to-run package. You have to register in order to download and these login credentials is needed to run GenyMotion.

Visit the download page and download the relevant package.

You also can download the IntelliJ and Eclipse plugins from there.

Then run GenyMotion. If it says that Virtualbox service is not running, simply run VirtualBox first and then run GenyMotion afterwards. (You have to login before you download a VM.)

Then select a VM and download it. And it’s ready. Run the VM and see the time it takes to start. 😉

Connecting IntelliJ with GenyMotion

Start IntelliJ. Get the plugins manager window from File -> Settings -> (under IDE settings) Plugins .

Install the downloaded GenyMotion plugin. (for more info, visit here)

Then goto GenyMotion settings via File -> Settings and select GenyMotion under IDE settings. Then locate GenyMotion installation location in there. Usually it is “C:\Program Files\Genymobile\Genymotion”.

Click  icon in the toolbar. (If the toolbar is not visible, enable it from View -> Toolbar).

You should be able see the GenyMotion Device Manager along with installed VMs list. Select the needed VM and start it.

Then in your project, add a “Android Application” configuration and select “show chooser dialog” in Target Device section.

Then hit on Run. Then you will be prompted to select the VM and you’ll see the running GenyMotion VM there.  Select that and click OK.

Tadaaa.. !! Now experience the super fast Android Emulator (or rather VM). 😀
