Our thoughts

The Alaska Airlines VisaĀ® Business card is a great option for business owners who are also Alaska Airlines frequent flyers.

The card offers unlimited 3 miles for every $1 spent on eligible Alaska Airlines purchases and unlimited 1 mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases. It also includes several nice airline perks such as free checked bags for you and up to six companions and steeply discounted lounge passes.

One key perk of this card is its annual companion fare: a discount code that allows you to buy an annual companion fare for just $ ($99 plus taxes and fees) when you purchase a full-fare domestic coach ticket. This companion fare and the other travel benefits can add significant value for those who fly Alaska Airlines often enough to reap the rewards.

The card does charge an annual fee, but it's modest compared with many other airline business credit cards, provided you carry only one card.

  • Offers a competitive welcome bonus with an Alaska Airlines Companion Fare offer to sweeten the deal
  • Airline perks including free checked bags and 50% off Alaska Lounge day passes
  • Miles redemption flexibility with no blackout dates on Alaska Airlines, plus option to redeem on partner airlines
  • You must be a frequent Alaska Airlines flyer to reap full benefits
  • Annual fee of $50 for the company and $25 per card
  • Lackluster rewards rate outside of Alaska Airlines purchases (only 1 mile per $1 spent)

The best small business credit card for your company is one that helps you boost your spending power, earn rewards, and build credit.

Hereā€™s how to choose the best small business credit card for your needsā€”and avoid some common pitfalls along the way.

What exactly is a small business credit card?

Small business credit cards work just like any other credit card: buy stuff now, pay for it later. But they also have features just for small business ownersā€”things like travel rewards points, bonus rewards for business purchases, and ways to track and manage spending.

Why should you get a small business credit card?

1. Keep your business expenses separate

The most obvious benefit of having a dedicated business card: keeping your business expenses distinct from your personal expenses. It means at tax time you wonā€™t have to spend hours sorting everything into business and personal buckets for your accountant.

2. Track and manage your expenses

There are few tasks more tedious than tracking expenses. Fortunately some cards have associated apps that let you tag purchases as you make them and even attach a picture of your receipt. These features, along with integration with bookkeeping software, make monthly tracking (not to mention tax time!) that much easier.

Many small business cards also make it simple to issue employee cards, as well as to monitor and limit the spending on them. Bonus: youā€™ll earn rewards that youā€™d miss out on if employees used their own cards.

3. Cover the cash flow crunch

Credit cards can save your butt in a cash flow crunch. Like when you have to pay the bills today, but your invoice wonā€™t get paid until the next billing cycle.

In that case, you could pay the bills with a credit card today, and pay it off next week when you get paid. Business credit limits are way higher than personal credit cards (usually starting around $50, or more). And a credit card is easier to get than a line of credit.

Some business cards come with flexible payment terms or introductory offers, such as 0% APR financing for one year after account openingā€”which means you may not need to pay interest for a year or more. If you know you can pay off a large purchase within the introductory period, it amounts to a free loan.

4. Bask in the rewards

Banks are competing for your business, which means business cards often have killer perks.

Some rewards programs help you earn points faster, including welcome offers and bonus rewards on big purchases or in spending categories like office supplies, plane tickets, Facebook advertising and office WiFi.

Others can make travelling easier, letting you speed past security lines, relax in airport lounges, or get free hotel stays or upgrades.

And, of course, there are cashback rewards cards, which earn you money that goes back on your card or directly into your bank account.

5. Build credit for your business

It may not be as sexy as travel perks, but having a good credit score has real-life impact. Paying your credit card bill on time each month is the most important factor in building creditā€”which, in turn, determines whether your business qualifies for loans, good vendor terms, office or equipment leases, and low business insurance rates.

6. Get automatic insurance on things you buy

You take on enough risk as a business owner. Having a business credit card can reduce it in at least one area. When you pay for things on your business credit card, theyā€™re often automatically protected against things like theft and damage. Sometimes you even get an extended refund or warranty period. This comes in handy for big purchases like laptops or equipment for your business.

Many cards also carry insurance for trip cancellations, delays, accidents, lost and delayed baggage, and car rentals. One less thing to think about.

Types of cards

You might use the terms ā€œcorporate cardā€ and ā€œbusiness cardā€ interchangeably, but they are actually quite different: small business cards are issued to a specific individualā€”usually the business ownerā€”who provides a personal guarantee. Corporate cards are issued to big corporations; the corporation, rather than an individual, is on the hook if they fail to pay.

Weā€™re rooting for you to one day reach corporate card status (if itā€™s in your long term plan), but in the meantime, you have a couple alternative options as a small business owner: a credit card or a charge card. Hereā€™s a breakdown of the key differences between the two:

Credit CardCharge Card
Has a pre-set spending limit. If you go over, youā€™re on the hook: youā€™ll get a fee or your card will be declined. No pre-set spending limit. Gives you the flexibility to make larger purchases without requesting a credit increase.
Lets you carry a balance from month to month, as long as you make the minimum payment. If you carry a balance, youā€™ll be charged interest and it may affect your credit score.Requires you to pay your balance in full every month. If you donā€™t, youā€™ll pay a steep penalty (usually 3% of the balance) and your issuer may suspend your credit.
Easier to qualify for.More difficult to qualify for.

Avoid these common pitfalls

Read the terms and conditions

You know that small print? The text that makes your eyes glaze over? In this case it actually matters. Business credit cards arenā€™t regulated by the consumer protections offered under the federal Credit CARD Act of ā€”so keep an eye out for changing interest rates, due dates, or fees.

Pay your balance (yes, every month)

Avoid a world of pain by diligently paying off your card each month. Penalty fees on charge cards and interest on credit cards will quickly eat into your bottom lineā€”unless, of course, youā€™re still within an 0% introductory APR period. That said, if you do end up paying interest for a balance on a business credit card, you can claim it as a business expense on your taxes.

Carrying a balance will also hurt your businessā€™s credit score, which will hurt your ability to secure financing in the future. It can also hurt your personal credit score. Though some issuers only report seriously sketchy activity to consumer credit bureaus, others (like Capital One), report all business credit activity.

Manage employee cards

If youā€™re giving cards to employees, only give them to people you trust, who have frequent expenses.

Set some simple, clear rules around spending. Whatā€™s the limit on meals? Hotel rooms? If employees have alcohol with a meal, can that go on the card as well? The policy can be different depending on the needs and seniority of the employee, but it should bank of america business credit card sign in be written downā€”and each card-holding employee should sign it.

Some cards will trigger a text or email each time an employee makes a purchase (or a certain type of purchase). Others will allow you to cap expenses on individual cardsā€”like limiting gas to $50 per day. Regardless, you or your accounting department should review each statement and quickly pull cards from employees with any suspicious activity.

There are three Bank of America credit cards designed with small-business owners in mind. At first glance, the cards may look similar ā€” but each one comes with very different benefits. Weā€™ll walk you through the benefits each card offers so you can choose the one that works best for you and your business.

What you need to know about each card

Because these cards offer different benefits, consider each one before making your choice.

Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Cash Rewards MastercardĀ® credit card

The Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Cash Rewards MastercardĀ® credit card offers the highest ongoing rewards of the three ā€” if your spending lines up with its bonus categories.

With the cardā€™s ongoing rewards program, youā€™ll earn 3% cash back on purchases in a category of your choice. You can select one of six categories and even change your selection monthly.

Here are the categories you can pick from.

  • Gas stations
  • Office supply stores
  • Travel
  • TV/telecom and wireless services
  • Computer services
  • Business consulting services

Youā€™ll also earn 2% cash back on eligible dining purchases and 1% cash back on all other purchases.

These cash back rates are great for a card with no annual fee, but thereā€™s a cap. Once youā€™ve spent $50, per calendar year on combined purchases within the 3% and 2% cash back categories, any additional spending in those categories will earn you 1% cash back.

Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Cash Rewards MastercardĀ® credit card holders are eligible for the Preferred Rewards for Business program, which offers even more cash back rewards. Gold tier members get a 25% reward bonus, Platinum members receive a 50% bonus and Platinum Honors members receive a 75% bonus. In order to qualify for the program with this card, you must have a business banking relationship with Bank bank of america business credit card sign in America or Merrill and maintain a certain balance in your business accounts.

Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Travel Rewards World MastercardĀ® credit card

The Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Travel Rewards World MastercardĀ® credit card is designed for the business owner on the road. It comes with a good rewards program for travel and the option to earn even more points when you book travel through the bankā€™s travel center.

  • Earn points for every $1 spent on purchases.
  • Earn three points for every $1 spent on eligible travel purchases booked through the Bank of America Travel Center.
  • You can redeem points for a statement credit to offset dining and travel purchases, travel, cash or gift cards.
  • Points redeemed for travel credits are worth $ each ā€” so 25, points equals $ in travel credits.
  • You can redeem points for cash at a lower rate of $ ā€” so 25, points equals $ in cash.

And if you travel overseas for business, you can take this card internationally without worrying ā€” the Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Travel Rewards World MastercardĀ® credit card charges a $0 foreign transaction fee.

Just like with the Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Travel Rewards World MastercardĀ® credit card, you could earn a 25% to 75% bonus on earned points through the Preferred Rewards for Business program, depending on whether youā€™re a Gold, Platinum or Platinum Honors tier member.

Bank of AmericaĀ® Platinum PlusĀ® MastercardĀ® Business card

The Bank of AmericaĀ® Platinum PlusĀ® MastercardĀ® Business card doesnā€™t have an ongoing rewards program. But it does offer new cardholders a $ statement credit after making at least $3, in net purchases west texas national bank kermit texas the card within the first 90 days of account opening.

It also comes with the lowest regular purchase APR out of the three. So if a business owner qualifies for the lowest rate, it could be helpful if they need to carry a balance from month to month.

This card offers a 0% intro purchase APR for the first seven billing cycles, which could help your business with startup costs. After the intro period ends, the card has a variable purchase APR of % to % based on your credit profile. Note that the other two Bank of America business credit cards have slightly longer intro purchase APR offers.

Without any rewards program, the Bank of AmericaĀ® Platinum PlusĀ® MastercardĀ® Business card lags behind the others in this category. If your business has recurring regular expenses, you could be missing out on earning valuable rewards each month.

How to pick the right card for you

If youā€™re on the road a lot and the majority of your spending comes from travel, the Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Travel Rewards World MastercardĀ® credit card is a good option. With a rewards rate of points per $1 spent on all purchases and three points per $1 spent on eligible travel purchases booked through the Bank of America Travel Center, travel rewards can stack up quickly. But using the rewards on this card for purchases other than travel doesnā€™t offer the best benefits.

If you spend less on travel and more across a range of categories, the Bank of AmericaĀ® Business Advantage Cash Rewards MastercardĀ® credit card offers the most flexible rewards program of the three. With 3% cash back in the category of your choice, 2% cash back on dining (for the first $50, in combined choice category/dining purchases each calendar year, then 1%), and an unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases, you may be able to earn cash back quickly.

Plus, the flexibility of redemption options makes it easy to redeem the rewards you rack up.

Both of these cards become even more valuable if youā€™re a member of the Preferred Rewards for Business program. Overall, both cards are solid picks for small-business owners.

But the Bank of AmericaĀ® Platinum PlusĀ® MastercardĀ® Business card lags behind the other two cards. Without an ongoing rewards program, you could potentially be losing out on valuable cash back or travel rewards. You might be better off choosing a credit card that offers rewards for what you regularly spend your money on.

If none of these credit cards are right for you, consider one of these business cards instead.
