How To Verify Funds on a Check

If you have any doubts about depositing a check you've received, it’s wise to verify funds and find out whether the check is likely to bounce. If you deposit a bad check, you’ll have to pay bank fees, plus you’ll need to take additional steps to get the money you're owed.

How To Verify Funds

To verify a check, you need to contact the bank that the money is coming from.

  1. Find the bank name on the front of the check.
  2. Search for the bank online and visit the bank’s official site to get a phone number for customer service. Don’t use the phone number printed on the check.
  3. Tell the customer service representative that you’d like to verify a check you received.
  4. Provide the bank account and routing numbers from the bottom of the front of the check.
  5. Provide the amount of the check.

Use Legitimate Sources suntrust account number on check The check might have the bank’s phone number printed along with the bank’s name and logo, but don't rely on that phone number for verification. If the check is fake, con artists may have provided a number that goes to a fake “customer service agent,” who will tell you the payment is good. Instead, do your own research to find a legitimate phone number for the bank.

Bank Policies May Pose Challenges

Some banks make check verification difficult or impossible. They may require you to visit a branch in person. Or, they may only verify the account exists, not whether it has any funds, in order to protect their customers' privacy. From there, you have to decide whether or not to take your chances and deposit the check.

What Do You Know?

After you verify funds, you have more information, but you still can’t be certain that the check is good. At best, you might find out that there are sufficient funds available in the check writer’s account at the time of your phone call (or at least as of that morning). So, what could go wrong?

  • The check writer can withdraw funds from the account before you deposit the check.
  • You might deposit the check immediately after verifying it, but it can take a day or two for the check to hit the check writer’s account. Even if you deposit the check with your bank’s mobile deposit app, the process might still take a day or two.
  • The person who gave you the check might have given you a stolen check or used stolen checking account details. The legitimate account owner may have sufficient funds, but they can reverse the payment once they see that a fraudulent transaction has hit their account.
  • Other withdrawals, debits, or account holds can deplete funds from the check writer’s account before your check is presented.

When you verify funds, there’s no guarantee that the money will be there for you. The funds are available temporarily, but you can’t reserve those funds. Unless the check is an authentic cashier’s check (which is drawn on the bank’s own accounts) or a certified check, there’s always a risk that the check will bounce.

How To Prevent Problems

The safest way to make sure you get your money is to cash the check in person at the check writer’s bank. You must visit suntrust account number on check branch of the check writer’s bank for this strategy to work. If you take it to your bank, equitable bank north platte nebraska it happens to be a different bank, your bank might give you cash immediately. However, the funds have not yet been collected from the other bank. If you go to the bank that the funds are drawn on, the money comes out of that account immediately.

Using Your Bank?

What happens if you deposit (or cash) the check at your bank? It’s safest to wait several weeks before you spend the money—unless you’re confident that the check is good. You’re responsible for any money you take out of your account, so you’ll have to repay your bank if the check bounces. Your bank's funds availability policy (and federal law) may allow you to walk away with cash, but that doesn’t mean the check is good.

Check Verification Services

If your business accepts checks from customers regularly, contacting banks for every check is not practical. Automated check verification services can citizens bank mortgage you figure out if you're likely to get paid, but they don't necessarily verify recent account balances. Instead, those services flag accounts and people who have a history of writing bad checks—and that's useful information. Some services even guarantee payment if they fail to alert you to a bad check.

Unfortunately, there is no simple, suntrust account number on check tool for consumers to verify checks online. You need to contact the particular bank that the funds are drawn on (or the check issuer), and the bank needs to be willing to accommodate your request.

Red Flags

In addition to asking banks for information, some basic detective work can help you determine if a check is likely to be a fake.

  • Look for a list of security features, which often appears on the back of the check. Next, verify each of those features.
  • Look for microprint, which suggests that the check was printed by a legitimate check printer (and not at a con artist’s home).
  • Look for behavioral red flags, like somebody asking you to give them cash in exchange for a check.
  • If you accept checks from customers, set up rules to reduce the chances of getting ripped off.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How long does it take to verify funds on a check?

Banks should usually be able to verify a check for you within a few minutes over the phone. You might have to take the time to go to the branch in person, however, as some banks require this.

Closing a bank account is a more involved process than paying a bill. If you’re closing your own account or closing an account for a deceased loved one, there are certain steps that you’ll need to take. Here, we’ll streamline the process of closing a Suntrust bank account.

Tip: The other aspects of handling a loved one's unfinished business can be overwhelming without a way to organize your process. We have a post-loss checklist that will help you ensure that your loved one's family, estate, and other affairs are taken care of.

How to Close a Deceased Loved One’s Suntrust Bank Account

After a loved one dies, there are a lot of odds and ends that need to be tied up. Sometimes family members have to handle all of those details, like canceling credit cards after a death. In many cases, an executor will be appointed to handle the affairs of the deceased. Typical executor duties can include things like settling debts, distributing assets, and closing bank accounts. If you’ve been assigned as an executor, these steps will help you cancel a Suntrust account:

» MORE: Create a free online memorial in just a few minutes.

Step 1: Cancel any auto drafts or direct deposits scheduled for the account

Many people have set up paychecks to get directly deposited into their accounts. They also frequently set up automatic payments so they are sure to pay bills on time. In an ideal world, the deceased will have left you a list of all their accounts and given you access to a password manager to make this process easier.

Before you close a bank account, it’s important to cancel all of these. The reason for this is that most major banks reserve the right to reopen an account if a debit or credit comes through after the account is closed. When this happens, it is referred to as a zombie account. If a payment comes out of a closed account, it will put the account into the negative and begin to rack up overdraft fees. That can make your job as executor a lot more difficult.

Step 2: Get a letter of testamentary

A letter of testamentary is a legal document that shows you have the legal right to act as an executor. This letter will empower you to pay off any debts, close accounts, and distribute assets according to the deceased’s wishes. If the deceased had a will and named you the executor, you should contact your local probate court. They will talk you through filling out the correct paperwork and filing the will. After that is done, they will issue your letter of testamentary.

Pro-tip: request several certified copies of the letter of testamentary, as you’ll need them for other entities besides the bank.

Step 3: Get certified copies of the death certificate

A death certificate is another legal document. This one is an official credit chase journey of someone’s death. If a funeral home is involved in the burial process, you can contact them for help acquiring copies. Alternatively, you can contact your state vital records office for certified copies. Step 4a: Visit a Suntrust bank with your required documentation

In addition to the letter of testamentary and death certificate, you’ll need to bring a valid government ID. This could be a driver’s license or a passport. This will provide proof that you are who you say you are.

In that case, you should call the customer service line at SUNTRUST. They can let you know the best way to proceed.

The way that process goes will depend on the regulations where you live and your individual situation. If you’re consolidating the assets of the estate into a single account, you can have the bank transfer the funds there.

If the bank account has a designated beneficiary, the funds can be transferred to them. This could be done via electronic transfer, or through a certified check in the beneficiary’s name. Again, this process will vary slightly depending on where you live.

Step 6: Ask for documentation

When you fulfill your role as executor, it’s extremely important to make sure that you document everything. It’s your legal responsibility to make sure that the debts of the estate are settled and the remaining assets are distributed. You will also need to be able to prove that in case there are any inheritance disputes. Get documentation that shows the account has been closed, as well as proof of any disbursements.

Where Can I Find SunTrust?

You can find this bank online, on mobile, at about 1, physical branches and at over 2, ATMs. The bank’s physical locations are limited to Alabama, Arkansas, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

You are still able to open an account online or over the phone if you don’t live in these states. However, you may find banking to be more inconvenient without a branch near you.

What Can You Do Online With SunTrust?

This image details the SunTrust Bank homepage.

You can do a lot of your necessary banking online with SunTrust. Already from its homepage, you can look through its mortgage, checking, credit cards, investment, wealth management and commerical options. You can also easily sign in directly from the homapge when you have an account. If you don’t already have an account, you can open these accounts online after browsing the benefits and costs of each.

The bank’s website also offers a live chat service, allowing you to talk to a bank representative about any questions and concerns you might have. For example, since the savings interest rates are not posted on the bank’s website, SmartAsset was able to use the Live Chat feature to ask about the rates.

How Do I Access My Money?

You can access your money wherever you can find the bank. When you’re on the website, you can log into your online banking account from any page with your user ID and password. The same is true when you access your account on your mobile device. Once you’re logged in, you can check on your accounts, send and receive money with Zelle® and even deposit checks on your mobile device.

Of course, you can also access your money at SunTrust locations and ATMs. You can do this with your account information or your SunTrust Mastercard® Debit Card.

How Can I Save More Money With a SunTrust Account?

SunTrust doesn’t offer the highest interest rates out there, so you may find it hard to save more here than with other banks. Your best bet to earn at the highest SunTrust rates is to open a CD. These accounts have the highest rates the bank offers. Plus, there is no monthly fee. You do have to meet a pretty high minimum deposit to open an account.

Most SunTrust bank accounts charge a monthly maintenance fee. However, each can be waived in a few different ways. So if you want to save on account fees, you’ll need to meet one of the given requirements.

What’s the Process for Opening an Account With SunTrust?

This image details the SunTrust bank online account application process.

To open an account online, you need to choose the account you’d like to open and click a blue “Open an Account” or “Open Now” button. From there, you’ll be taken to the first page of the application where you simply have to enter a promo code if you have one and choose whether you’re already a customer or not. You also want to make sure you have all the necessary information ready to go for the following pages. This includes your Social Security number, address, government-issued ID and bank account information to make your initial deposit.

The whole online process should only take about five minutes. If you have questions while filling out your online application, you can call the bank at

If you don’t want to apply online, you can also visit a branch or call the bank to open an account.

What’s the Catch?

It’s important to note that not all the bank’s interest rates are posted online, namely for its savings and money market accounts. This is because they are subject to change. To find this information, you’ll have to call or chat with a bank representative.

Further, these interest rates aren’t the highest in the industry. As is usually the case, the CDs have the highest rates. Other than that, each account earns at rates pretty low on the industry scale.

Bottom Line

Overall, SunTrust doesn’t really outshine its competitors in the industry. Its interest rates fall on the lower end of the rates spectrum, with most rates performing below the national average. Its accounts also tend to require higher minimum deposits and monthly fees. Meeting these requirements isn’t always easy for all customers.

What SunTrust can offer is a more personal and small bank feel. Their customer service representatives are easy to reach and helpful. Plus, you can join and take advantage of the bank’s onUp Movement that helps you feel more confident in your finances.

Pros Explained

  • Seamless integration with digital payment applications: SunTrust allows customers to link SunTrust Mastercard credit and debit cards and SunTrust Visa credit cards to Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay, and Click to Pay. This makes contactless payments an effortless process, no matter which digital application you prefer.
  • Multiple ways to earn cash back and other perks: The SunTrust Deals program offers banking customers personalized offers to earn cash back by making purchases with their SunTrust debit or credit card at participating retailers. Plus, if customers have a rewards credit card with SunTrust, they can increase the cash back they receive from that card by 10% if they have the cash back deposited into any SunTrust deposit account.
  • Online, mobile, and text-based banking available: SunTrust customers can handle their banking tasks with a robust online banking portal. You also have the option of downloading the mobile app, available for iOS and Android, to your device, which provides a wide range of services, including mobile alerts. Customers can also handle several banking services via text message.

Cons Explained

  • Only available in southeastern U.S.: Despite being the seventh-largest bank in the United States, SunTrust is only present in 10 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Website not completely transparent: Interest rates are listed on the website based on your zip code, so it may be necessary to call the bank to learn what rates you can expect from interest-bearing accounts.
  • Low interest rates: The rates, when you do call to determine what they are, seem to be relatively low, even in a time when most banks have low rates.

Who Is SunTrust Best For?

SunTrust will be the right bank for customers looking for perks with their basic checking and savings options. It may be a particularly good fit for those who:

  • Wish to bank with a large and well-established institution
  • Reside in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, or the District of Columbia
  • Would like to receive cash back from their debit and credit card purchases and cash bonuses for putting that cash back into their SunTrust deposit accounts
  • Need a seamless integration with digital payment apps

What Does SunTrust Offer?

SunTrust has a wide array of banking products for its customers. These include:

Savings Account

This basic savings account can be a good way for new savers to get acclimated to the habit of setting money aside. SunTrust’s Essential Savings account offers no interest, but it also has no minimum deposit and no monthly fees whatsoever (provided you opt-out of receiving paper statements, which cost $3 per month).

In addition, having an Essential Savings account gives you access to a 10% Loyalty Cash Bonus with a SunTrust Rewards credit card. You just need to redeem your cash back into a SunTrust Essential Savings account (or any other SunTrust deposit account) to receive the additional 10% loyalty bonus.

Overdraft Assurance Fee

Though overdraft protection is free, signing up for the Overdraft Assurance line of credit will trigger a $7 per month fee for the service. This $7 fee will be debited from your checking account each month.

Checking Accounts

The Essential Checking account requires a $ minimum deposit to open and comes with a $7 monthly maintenance fee. However, you can have the fee waived by doing one of the following:

  • Make 10 or more transactions per statement cycle
  • Make $ or more in total direct deposits per statement cycle
  • Keep a $ minimum daily balance aggregated across all your deposit accounts
  • Open your Essential Checking account as a student and receive a five-year student waiver of the monthly maintenance fee

You will be subject to an overdraft fee of $36 if you overdraw your Essential Checking account, and you may be subject to up to six overdraft fees per day. However, this account comes with Default Decline, which means the account is set up to decline any ATM or one-time debit card transactions that may overdraw your account.

You may also opt for the Transactions Paid Option, which will authorize a one-time debit card purchase or ATM transaction when there is not enough money available in the account, though it will also trigger the $36 overdraft fee. You may instead choose overdraft protection and link your Essential Checking account to another SunTrust deposit account, credit card, personal line of credit, or Overdraft Assurance line of credit to cover overdrafts, with a fee of $ per transfer.

Essential Checking account holders are also eligible for the 10% Loyalty Cash Bonus with a SunTrust Cash Rewards credit card.

There are three tiers of the Advantage Checking account at SunTrust, although all three offer a % annual percentage yield (APY) on your balance. Like the non-interest-bearing Essential Checking account, Advantage Checking requires a $ minimum deposit to open. All three tiers of Advantage Checking have a $20 per month maintenance fee that can be waived in one of the following ways:

  • By making direct deposits totaling $3, or more each month
  • By maintaining $10, total combined relationship balances across all of your SunTrust deposit or investment accounts
  • By holding a linked SunTrust Small Business Checking account, Lending account, or credit card

There are several perks that all three tiers of Advantage Checking share. These include a starter pack of checks, access to up to four Essential Checking accounts with the monthly maintenance fees waived, three out-of-network ATM fees waived per billing cycle, SunTrust fees waived on incoming wire transfers, and free money orders and official checks.

The big benefit of Advantage Checking, however, is the Loyalty Cash Bonus, and that’s where you see the difference among the three tiers. The first tier, Advantage, is when you carry a balance between $0 and $25,, and it means you receive the 10% Loyalty Cash Bonus with a SunTrust Cash Rewards credit card. You reach the Advantage Choice tier when your balance is between $25, and $,, making you eligible for a Loyalty Cash Bonus of 25%. Reach the Advantage Preferred Tier with a balance of $, or more, and you are eligible for a 50% Loyalty Cash Bonus.

SunTrust Customer Service

SunTrust’s customer service line is available for automated service 24 hours a day at , and the website offers a full menu of service options to help any banking customers needing assistance at any time of the day or night. However, the lack of transparency on the site extends to customer service information. For instance, the site does not provide information on what hours the call center is open to reach an actual human customer service rep.

SunTrust’s app, however, is well rated on both the Apple and Google Play stores, at and , respectively.J.D. Power also notes that SunTrust has high satisfaction rankings among customers but was not included in the National Banking Satisfaction Study because its merger with BB&T (which is also highly rated) had not yet completed at the time of the study.

Customers living in one of the 10 states served by the bank (and the District of Columbia) can also drop into one of the 1, branches or stop at one of the more than 2, ATMs for their transactions. The mobile banking options also make it easy for SunTrust customers to bank on the go, including using digital payment apps and text-banking.

Verdict

While the lack of online transparency may make comparing SunTrust to other banks a little more difficult, this financial institution offers a number of solid perks with its myriad products and services. Though SunTrust’s rates for interest-bearing accounts and CDs may be relatively low, the Loyalty Cash bonuses may make up for these unimpressive rates.

SunTrust Essential Checking Account Review

SunTrust Bank

SunTrust Bank, one of the largest in the country, is likely to be an option for your next checking account.

It's not surprising that the bank operates a network of more than 1, branches and 2, ATMs in the region, making it a popular choice for people who live in the Southeast.

The SunTrust Essential Checking Account is the basic option that is made available to everyday customers.

In this review, learn about the account's different features and fees before you decide if it is the right one for you.

Good ATM Access in the Southeast

SunTrust Bank primarily focuses on the Southeastern United States and Washington D.C.

So long as you stay in that region, you’ll have easy access to ATMs thanks to the bank’s network of more than 2, ATMs.

If you leave the southeastern United States, you’ll have more trouble finding ATMs that you can use for free.

You might wind up having to use an ATM on another bank’s network, which can get costly.

SunTrust Bank Essential Checking Account Pros & Cons

ProsCons
  • Widespread branch and ATM access
  • Easy personal payments
  • Mobile banking apps available
  • Monthly fee (can be waived)
  • Service fees on the higher end
  • Doesn't earn interest

Out-of-network ATM costs

If you have to use another bank’s ATM to check your balance or make a withdrawal, SunTrust Bank will charge you a fee.

Unfortunately:

You’ll pay $3 for each transaction at another bank’s ATM if you’re in the US. If you’re outside the US, you’ll pay a $5 fee per transaction.

These fees are on top of any fees charged by the ATM’s owner. You could wind up paying as much as $10 or more just to make a withdrawal.

You should try not to rely on being able to visit an ATM if you’re in an area without much SunTrust ATM coverage.

Zero Liability for Unauthorized Use of Your Debit Card

Like nearly every checking account, the SunTrust Essential Checking Accounts gives account holders the option to get a debit card when they open the account.

You can use your debit card to make withdrawals and deposits from ATMs. You can also use your debit card to make purchases at stores that accept cards.

SunTrust Bank wants its customers to feel comfortable when they use their debit card.

That’s why:

The bank offers a zero-liability guarantee for debit cardholders.

So long as you take “reasonable care in protecting your card” and promptly report the loss or theft, you will not be held liable for the charges.

Free Person-to-Person Transfers with Zelle

SunTrust Bank gives account holders access to Zelle, a free person-to-person transfer system that lets you send money electronically.

The best part is:

You can send money to someone even if they haven’t set up Zelle yet. All they need is an account at a bank that uses Zelle.

When you open Zelle on your computer or smartphone, you’ll be asked to enter the recipient’s e-mail address or phone number.

You don’t need to know anything about where they bank or what accounts they have. A phone number or e-mail is all you need.

Once you’ve chosen who you want to pay, you’ll be asked to enter the amount you want to send.

Hit send, and the recipient will be notified that they have a transfer waiting.

If they’ve already set up Zelle, the money will be removed from your account and arrive in theirs within three (3) business days.

Often, the process is even faster. If they haven’t used Zelle before, they’ll be asked to set it up.

Once they have, the transfer will go through and the money will arrive a few days later.

25 Starter Checks and 50% Off Your First Order

Even though people’s finances have become more digital, sometimes you need to use a check.

The SunTrust Essential Checking Account offers a free package of 25 starter checks.

You can use these checks to pay bills, give money to friends, or provide to your payroll office to set up direct deposit.

If you go through your full set of starter checks, you can get 50% off your first full order of checks.

The discount also applies to customized and personalized checks.

Ways to Avoid Monthly Fee

The SunTrust Essential Checking Account charges two different monthly fees: a $7 maintenance fee and a $3 paper statement fee, for a total of $10 per month.

Avoiding the paper statement fee is simple enough.

Sign up for electronic statements and you won’t have to pay the fee.

There are multiple ways to avoid the $7 monthly maintenance fee.

The fee will be waived if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • Make 10 banking transactions in a statement cycle
  • Receive $ in direct deposits in a statement cycle
  • Maintain a $ minimum daily balance for a statement cycle

You can also have the fee waived for five years if you open the account as a student.

Other Fees

Monthly maintenance fees are the most common type of fee you’ll have to pay on a checking account.

However, there are other fees that the bank might charge.

Some of the fees that may apply to the SunTrust Essential Checking Account are detailed below.

  • Make $2, or more in total qualifying monthly Direct Deposits, or
  • Keep a $2, minimum daily Select Checking balance, or
  • Maintain $10, total combined relationship balances linked across deposits, investments, mortgages and loans, or
  • Hold a SunTrust Mortgage with SurePay

Here's some of the main fees and features of the account:

Convenience

The SunTrust Essential Checking Account offers many of the convenience features you’d expect from a checking account.

Online and mobile banking

You get free access to online and mobile banking when you open the account.

You can manage every aspect of your checking account through the bank’s website or app.

You can view your account balance, transaction history, and any future scheduled transactions.

You can also make transfers or deposits through your phone. It’s entirely possible to never have to visit a branch, managing everything from your computer or phone.

The online portal also gives you access to bill pay services.

You can use this service to pay your bills rather than writing and mailing checks multiple times a month.

Whether you’re paying a utility company, loan, or internet bill, SunTrust can handle it for you.

All you have to do is tell the bank who you are paying and how much you owe. The bank will take care of writing the check for you.

Minimum deposit requirement

Perhaps the least convenient aspect of the account is its minimum deposit requirement.

You have to make a $ minimum deposit to open the account.

Getting that amount of money together might be difficult, so you might have some trouble getting the account open.

The Competition

The checking account is the most popular type of bank account in the United States.

That fact works in your favor because it means that you have a lot of options to choose from when you’re looking to open a new checking account.

It is a bit of a double-edged sword, however, as it’s easy to get overwhelmed with so many accounts to choose from.

Still, it’s important to take the time to find the right account so you know you’re getting a good deal.

When you’re comparing checking accounts, fees are the first thing to look at.

You want to make sure that you won’t pay any maintenance fees. If the account does charge a monthly fee, make sure that you can meet the fee-waiver requirements each month.

Other things to consider when comparing accounts are:

  • Minimum deposit requirements
  • Fee waiver requirements
  • Interest rates
  • ATM access
  • Convenience features

The Final Verdict

The SunTrust Essential Checking Account isn’t a particularly compelling checking account.

The monthly fee is easy enough to avoid, but the account doesn’t offer anything special.

If you don’t mind using an online bank, you’d be better off with an online checking account.

You’ll earn interest, there won’t be any monthly fees to worry about, and many offer more ATM availability than SunTrust does.

Use Legitimate Sources

The check might have the bank’s phone number printed along with the bank’s name and logo, but don't rely on that phone number for verification.

You must visit a branch of the check writer’s bank for this strategy to work. If you take it to your bank, and it happens to be a different bank, your bank might give you cash immediately.

Automated check verification services can help you figure out if you're likely to get paid, but they don't necessarily verify recent account balances. Instead, those services flag accounts and people who have a history of writing bad checks—and that's useful information. Some services even guarantee payment if they fail to alert you to a bad check.

Unfortunately, there is no simple, free tool for consumers to verify checks online.

Can you verify funds for a check online?

There are some paid services for check verification available online, but these are usually best suited to businesses' needs. There are no simple, free online tools that general consumers can use for check verification.

For example, is the routing number of the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis.

3(1+0+0) + 7(1+0+3) + (1+0+8) = 40
