Planet Fitness (PFIP LLC) is an American franchisor and operator of fitness centers based in Hampton, New Hampshire.[2] The company reports that it has 2, clubs,[1] making it one of the largest fitness club franchises by number of members and locations. There are locations across the United States as well as in other countries such as Canada, Dominican Republic, Panama, and Mexico. In the franchise expanded to Australia.[3] It markets itself as a "Judgement Free Zone" [sic] that caters to novice and casual gym users and is reported to be the nation’s fastest growing fitness center franchise.[4]

Planet Fitness locations in the United States as of

In , Planet Fitness founders, Michael and Marc Grondahl acquired a struggling Gold's Gym franchise in Dover, New Hampshire.[5] They eventually closed that original location, and brought on a third partner, current CEO Chris Rondeau.[6][5] In , they purchased the rights to the name Planet Fitness from Rick Berks and renamed their franchise.[7][5]

Berks had started his own Planet Fitness gym in in Sunrise, Florida, and eventually expanded it to three clubs, along with a Gold's Gym franchise.[8][9] Berks had been catering to the bodybuilding culture in his Gold’s Gym. “I decided I didn’t want to deal with that crowd, so that’s when I opened the original Planet Fitness club in Sunrise, Florida, in ” The name came from his daughter’s school project, “Fitness Planet.”[10] The new model was an effort to provide a fitness hub for everyday people.[11] Berks later went on to open the first Youfit Health Club in St. Petersburg, Florida.[12]

Rondeau and the Grondahls recognized that there was a greater opportunity to serve a much larger segment of the population if they changed the gym environment, both in attitude and format, by creating a non-intimidating, low-cost model.[13] Planet Fitness became known as the "Judgement Free Zone," aimed more at the average user than the bodybuilder type of fitness enthusiast.[14] They also dramatically reduced prices to compete against better-known brands.[15] This low-cost business model focuses on the needs of occasional or first-time health club members, rather than more experienced members,[4] and depends on many members rarely showing up.[16] According to a Planet Money episode from , "half of the Planet Fitness members don't ever go to their gyms."[17]

As part of their effort to create a non-intimidating environment, Planet Fitness has alienated many serious weight lifters. The gym utilizes a "lunk alarm", which is a loud siren and rotating light that is used when a gymgoer grunts too loudly or drops weights. [18] Some bodybuilders and weight lifters have found the way they're portrayed in Planet Fitness TV commercials to be offensive, and the way they're treated in Planet Fitness gyms to be "quite possibly discriminatory."[18] Planet Fitness has been criticized for prohibiting certain weightlifting exercises–such as deadlifts and clean-and-jerks–that many experts believe are highly effective.[19] In , Men's Health magazine called Planet Fitness "the worst gym in America."[19]

As early as March , the "Judgement Free Zone" policy has been expanded to allow trans women to use the women's locker room. The policy states that "members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity."[20]

In , Planet Fitness opened its first franchised location in Florida, with Eric Dore and Shane McGuiness.[14]

In the fall of , TSG Consumer Partners LLC became an equity partner in the Planet Fitness franchise.[21] Michael Grondahl, co-founder of Planet Fitness stepped down as CEO, and was succeeded by Chris Rondeau.[22][23] The company went public on August 6, [24]

In February , the franchise was added to the Franchise Times' "Fast and Serious" list of top franchises (#1),[13] and in its ranking of franchises, Forbes magazine ranked Planet Fitness #4.[25] It ranked in the top 50 of Entrepreneur magazine's Franchise in [26]

In , the company received criticism for charging its customers for March dues "despite closing its facilities nationwide due to the novel coronavirus pandemic."[27] They stated that they were unable to stop the pre-scheduled payments on short notice, but would not charge future monthly dues until they reopen, and would also provide a credit for closed days previously paid for.[28]

The club's two membership levels are $10 and $ per month: the $10 per month level includes access to cardio and strength equipment, unlimited group fitness instruction and pizza and bagels once a month; the $ per month ("Black Card") level allows members to bring one guest per day at no charge, access to all Planet Fitness locations, and access to extra amenities, such as tanning booths, massage chairs, red light therapy and water massage beds.[33][26]

In December , Planet Fitness opened its first international location in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The second Toronto location opened in early [34][35] In October the company opened their second international location in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.[36]

With the addition of a Planet Fitness outlet in Hawaii in January ,[37] Planet Fitness had 1, locations with an estimated 10 million members across 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama[38] and Canada.[37][32] In , over 90% of Planet Fitness locations were opened by existing franchise owners.[39]

In October , Planet Fitness reached an agreement with NBC to sponsor the network's reality show, The Biggest Loser beginning with the season.[40] The contestants on the show worked out on Planet Fitness equipment and then at Planet Fitness gyms near their homes, working with Planet Fitness instructors.[40]

In March , Planet Fitness partnered with 50 Cent to sell his energy drink "Street King".[41]

Since December , Planet Fitness has been the official fitness sponsor of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on ABC.[42]

In March , Planet Fitness partnered with STOMP Out Bullying,[43] a national organization dedicated to bullying prevention, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to launch the company's national philanthropic initiative, The Judgement Free Generation.[44] Also in , the company donated more than $1 million to the program.[45][46][47] Planet Fitness has also provided mini "Judgement Free Zone" gyms to Boys & Girls Clubs in Manchester, New Hampshire[48] and Pasadena, California.[49]

    Here's Why Over 1 Million People Have Quit Planet Fitness Since July

    If you peek inside a Planet Fitness( PLNT % ) gym location these days, things look busy. Granted, it might not be as busy as it once was, but members are nonetheless exercising despite the ongoing COVID pandemic. Management says that its usage rates (how many people are actually present in the building) are currently 67% to 74% of what they were last year at this time.

    The usage rate appears to be trending in the right direction. But it doesn't tell the whole story for Planet Fitness, and the next stat should give investors pause. Since July, the company has lost over 1 million members.

    The mass exodus

    Gyms weren't considered an essential business when government decision-makers were trying to determine what could stay open shortly after the COVID pandemic began. As a result, all 2, Planet Fitness locations were closed at some point in However, somewhat surprisingly, the company lost relatively few members while gym locations were closed.

    Planet Fitness charges a monthly membership fee, but the fee was waived while gyms were closed. This gave members very little incentive to cancel their memberships early on. However, as gyms started reopening, the company started to bill people once again. And once this happened, there was a mass exodus.

    In the conference call to discuss third-quarter results, Planet Fitness management said it noticed a lot of losses during the second-month billing. This seems to imply members were charged for the first month after their local gym reopened, perhaps unaware it had started back up. But they made sure to cancel before having to pay the second bill. 

    Putting it in context

    Membership for Planet Fitness peaked in the first quarter of at million. This was an incredible jump from the prior quarter when it had million members. But the timing of this jump makes sense. With the dawn of a new year, many people resolve to exercise more frequently.

    This million-member jump came on the heels of a hot In , Planet Fitness added a whopping million members. Totaling it up, from the end of to the start of the COVID pandemic in the U.S., the company had added 3 million members -- up an impressive 24% over just five fiscal quarters. Then the coronavirus derailed the train.

    As of October, Planet Fitness was down to 14 million members. The last time the company had just 14 million members was in the second quarter of  Back then, there were 1, locations. Now there are 2, So, not only has membership fallen, but members per location have plummeted dramatically.

    Why it matters

    Planet Fitness may have merely lost low-commitment members. The company expressly targets these casual, first-time gym users. The goal is to motivate them to sign up, and its value-price proposition helps in this regard. But many don't actually wind up going to their local Planet Fitness all that much.

    For proof, consider what we already looked at with the usage rate for Planet Fitness. Roughly seven out of 10 people who were using the facilities last year are using them now, despite a steeper drop in members per location. Putting two and two together, there were a lot of members last year who simply weren't showing up.

    Management says the membership-exodus situation is stabilizing, with local cancellation rates slowing by the third month a gym was open. Many gyms have been open over three months now, so one would not expect membership to fall much further in This is one crucial piece of the puzzle moving forward and something to watch when the company reports next quarter.

    Taking it a step further, Planet Fitness's management believes its million-member loss can be recovered once advertising resumes. The company had cut back -- there's no reason to advertise if your gym is closed. But now it's targeting a big ad campaign centered around New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square in New York City. The company has the p.m. to a.m. slot.

    If Planet Fitness can leverage the exposure, perhaps it can quickly regain lost ground. After all, it added over a million members last year over New Year's Day. But this presupposes that people will feel comfortable using a gym. On that note, management said there seemed to be uneasiness as coronavirus cases increase around the country. In other words, it may not be as simple as running a new ad. People will need to feel it's safe to join a gym.

    Planet Fitness stock recently surged with news of a coronavirus vaccine candidate, nearly touching all-time highs. But until that vaccine is widely available, it's possible it's still too early for this company to resume its growth story.

    How to cancel a Planet Fitness membership in 2 ways

    • To cancel a Planet Fitness membership, you need to visit your gym in person or write a postal letter.
    • Planet Fitness doesn't allow you to cancel your membership by phone or online.
    • Your membership might already be on hold due to pandemic restrictions, and you may be able to get a three-month hold for medical reasons.

    Planet Fitness is a popular chain of fitness centers (it had more than 15 million members as of March ), but the franchise has not embraced modern customer service practices, especially when it comes to canceling membership plans.

    Instead of letting you close your account online, Planet Fitness requires you to visit your home club and speak to a representative at the front desk or send a letter via the postal service. 

    How to cancel your Planet Fitness membership

    You can't cancel your membership by phone, via the Planet Fitness website, or even by email. You only have two official options: visiting in person or sending a letter.

    • To cancel in person: Visit your home club's front desk and request a cancellation form. 
    • To cancel via mail: Write a letter that explains your intent to cancel your membership and includes your name, address, phone number, and Planet ID membership number. Address it to your home club, and Planet Fitness recommends sending it via certified mail. You'll want to follow up with the club to make sure your application was received, approved, and processed.

    How to pause your Planet Fitness membership

    If you need to step away from your Planet Fitness membership temporarily and would prefer not to cancel it entirely, you may be able to put your account on hold.

    Many clubs allow you to put your membership on hold for up to three months for medical reasons. Unfortunately, the rules vary from club to club, so you should reach out to customer service at the location where you have a membership. Either visit in person and speak to someone at the front desk or call your club.

    How to upgrade or downgrade your Planet Fitness membership

    If you want to downgrade your membership rather than cancel it, you need to do that in person as well. Visit your home club and speak to someone at the front desk about your account. 

    Membership upgrade, though, can be done online. Open the Upgrade webpage in a browser and follow the instructions. You'll need your Planet Fitness Keytag number to complete the process. If you prefer, you can also do this in person at the front desk. 

    Planet Fitness membership during COVID

    If you have a Planet Fitness membership and your home club is closed for safety and social distancing reasons, your membership is automatically frozen and you're not charged any fees. Your club will notify you when it reopens and what its rules are regarding mask wearing and other considerations.

    In , Planet Fitness founders, Michael and Marc Grondahl acquired a struggling Gold's Gym franchise in Dover, New Hampshire.[5] They eventually closed that original location, and brought on a third partner, current CEO Chris Rondeau.[6][5] In , they purchased the rights to the name Planet Fitness from Rick Berks and renamed their franchise.[7][5]

    Berks had started his own Planet Fitness gym in in Sunrise, Florida, and eventually expanded it to three clubs, along with a Gold's Gym franchise.[8][9] Berks had been catering to the bodybuilding culture in his Gold’s Gym. “I decided I didn’t want to deal with that crowd, so that’s when I opened the original Planet Fitness club in Sunrise, Florida, in ” The name came from his daughter’s school project, “Fitness Planet.”[10] The new model was an effort to provide a fitness hub for everyday people.[11] Berks later went on to open the first Youfit Health Club in St. Petersburg, Florida.[12]

    Rondeau and the Grondahls recognized that there was a greater opportunity to serve a much larger segment of the population if they changed the gym environment, both in attitude and format, by creating a non-intimidating, low-cost model.[13] Planet Fitness became known as the "Judgement Free Zone," aimed more at the average user than the bodybuilder type of fitness enthusiast.[14] They also dramatically reduced prices to compete against better-known brands.[15] This low-cost business model focuses on the needs of occasional or first-time health club members, rather than more experienced members,[4] and depends on many members rarely showing up.[16] According to a Planet Money episode from , "half of the Planet Fitness members don't ever go to their gyms."[17]

    As part of their effort to create a non-intimidating environment, Planet Fitness has alienated many serious weight lifters. The gym utilizes a "lunk alarm", which is a loud siren and rotating light that is used when a gymgoer grunts too loudly or drops weights. [18] Some bodybuilders and weight lifters have found the way they're portrayed in Planet Fitness TV commercials to be offensive, and the way they're treated in Planet Fitness gyms to be "quite possibly discriminatory."[18] Planet Fitness has been criticized for prohibiting certain weightlifting exercises–such as deadlifts and clean-and-jerks–that many experts believe are highly effective.[19] In , Men's Health magazine called Planet Fitness "the worst gym in America."[19]

    As early as March , the "Judgement Free Zone" policy has been expanded to allow trans women to use the women's locker room. The policy states that "members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity."[20]

    In , Planet Fitness opened its first franchised location in Florida, with Eric Dore and Shane McGuiness.[14]

    In the fall of , TSG Consumer Partners LLC became an equity partner in the Planet Fitness franchise.[21] Michael Grondahl, co-founder of Planet Fitness stepped down as CEO, and was succeeded by Chris Rondeau.[22][23] The company went public on August 6, [24]

    In February , the franchise was added to the Franchise Times' "Fast and Serious" list of top franchises (#1),[13] and in its ranking of franchises, Forbes magazine ranked Planet Fitness #4.[25] It ranked in the top 50 of Entrepreneur magazine's Franchise in [26]

    In , the company received criticism for charging its customers for March dues "despite closing its facilities nationwide due to the novel coronavirus pandemic."[27] They stated that they were unable to stop the pre-scheduled payments on short notice, but would not charge future monthly dues until they reopen, and would also provide a credit for closed days previously paid for.[28]

    The company reports that as of , there are 80 corporate-owned gyms, the rest independently owned and operated.[32]

    The club's two membership levels are $10 and $ per month: the $10 per month level includes access to cardio and strength equipment, unlimited group fitness instruction and pizza and bagels once a month; the $ per month ("Black Card") level allows members to bring one guest per day at no charge, access to all Planet Fitness locations, and access to extra amenities, such as tanning booths, massage chairs, red light therapy and water massage beds.[33][26]

    In December , Planet Fitness opened its first international location in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The second Toronto location opened in early [34][35] In October the company opened their second international location in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.[36]

    With the addition of a Planet Fitness outlet in Hawaii in January ,[37] Planet Fitness had 1, locations with an estimated 10 million members across 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama[38] and Canada.[37][32] In , over 90% of Planet Fitness locations were opened by existing franchise owners.[39]

      Here's Why Over 1 Million People Have Quit Planet Fitness Since July

      If you peek inside a Planet Fitness( PLNT % ) gym location these days, things look busy. Granted, it might not be as busy as it once was, but members are nonetheless exercising despite the ongoing COVID pandemic. Management says that its usage rates (how many people are actually present in the building) are currently 67% to 74% of what they were last year at this time.

      The usage rate appears to be trending in the right direction. But it doesn't tell the whole story for Planet Fitness, and the next stat should give investors pause. Since July, the company has lost over 1 million members.

      The mass exodus

      Gyms weren't considered an essential business when government decision-makers were trying to determine what could stay open shortly after the COVID pandemic began. As a result, all 2, Planet Fitness locations were closed at some point in However, somewhat surprisingly, the company lost relatively few members while gym locations were closed.

      Planet Fitness charges a monthly membership fee, but the fee was waived while gyms were closed. This gave members very little incentive to cancel their memberships early on. However, as gyms started reopening, the company started to bill people once again. And once this happened, there was a mass exodus.

      In the conference call to discuss third-quarter results, Planet Fitness management said it noticed a lot of losses during the second-month billing. This seems to imply members were charged for the first month after their local gym reopened, perhaps unaware it had started back up. But they made sure to cancel before having to pay the second bill. 

      Putting it in context

      Membership for Planet Fitness peaked in the first quarter of at million. This was an incredible jump from the prior quarter when it had million members. But the timing of this jump makes sense. With the dawn of a new year, many people resolve to exercise more frequently.

      This million-member jump came on the heels of a hot In , Planet Fitness added a whopping million members. Totaling it up, from the end of to the start of the COVID pandemic in the U.S., the company had added 3 million members -- up an impressive 24% over just five fiscal quarters. Then the coronavirus derailed the train.

      As of October, Planet Fitness was down to 14 million members. The last time the company had just 14 million members was in the second quarter of  Back then, there were 1, locations. Now there are 2, So, not only has membership fallen, but members per location have plummeted dramatically.

      Why it matters

      Planet Fitness may have merely lost low-commitment members. The company expressly targets these casual, first-time gym users. The goal is to motivate them to sign up, and its value-price proposition helps in this regard. But many don't actually wind up going to their local Planet Fitness all that much.

      For proof, consider what we already looked at with the usage rate for Planet Fitness. Roughly seven out of 10 people who were using the facilities last year are using them now, despite a steeper drop in members per location. Putting two and two together, there were a lot of members last year who simply weren't showing up.

      Management says the membership-exodus situation is stabilizing, with local cancellation rates slowing by the third month a gym was open. Many gyms have been open over three months now, so one would not expect membership to fall much further in This is one crucial piece of the puzzle moving forward and something to watch when the company reports next quarter.

      Taking it a step further, Planet Fitness's management believes its million-member loss can be recovered once advertising resumes. The company had cut back -- there's no reason to advertise if your gym is closed. But now it's targeting a big ad campaign centered around New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square in New York City. The company has the p.m. to a.m. slot.

      If Planet Fitness can leverage the exposure, perhaps it can quickly regain lost ground. After all, it added over a million members last year over New Year's Day. But this presupposes that people will feel comfortable using a gym. On that note, management said there seemed to be uneasiness as coronavirus cases increase around the country. In other words, it may not be as simple as running a new ad. People will need to feel it's safe to join a gym.

      Planet Fitness stock recently surged with news of a coronavirus vaccine candidate, nearly touching all-time highs. But until that vaccine is widely available, it's possible it's still too early for this company to resume its growth story.

      Sherwood Park residents have no shortage of places to work out in the community but a new business is hoping to attract residents into their orbit.

      Planet Fitness is set to open its first location in Sherwood Park. Karlee Arden, regional manager of Planet Fitness, confirmed it will be one of the biggest locations in the Edmonton area.

      “It is on the larger side of actually any location we have in Canada,” she said. “It is going to be more than 24, square feet in total. The closest ones in the Edmonton area (in size) are in St. Albert and Leduc and those are 16, and 11, square feet, respectively. The Sherwood Park one will be quite a bit bigger.”

      The new fitness centre, located at Broadview Drive, was once a World Health Club but Arden said the company began a complete overhaul of the space at the beginning of November.

      “We opened our pre-sale location, which is in the same complex but down a few doors, and it is a preview of what is to come. Inside there are posters, layouts and all sorts of things to give you a preview of what Planet Fitness looks like and what we’re all about,” Arden said.

      Planet Fitness Sherwood Park is set to open mid-December.

      “We’ve had a fair bit of traffic (at the info centre) with people looking to see what the club’s going to look like. We also do online joins so we’ve seen quite a bit of traffic online as well,” explained Arden, adding she expect the new gym will be a popular workout choice for residents. “We have pretty special deals on for people looking to join before the club opens and really good rates available.”

      Arden said Planet Fitness tries to set itself apart from other workout facilities by being low-cost but high value while also being comfortable and non-intimidating.

      “It is going to be all new state-of-the-art Matrix equipment, which is very user-friendly. Matrix does a fantastic job putting diagrams on the muscle group that it works out and your start and finish positions, a rep counter or set timer on the machine itself, and Planet Fitness takes it another level by putting a QR code on the machine, which allows you to use the Planet Fitness mobile app and scan the QR code to get a 20 second video on how to use it,” Arden said.

      There will also be more than pieces of cardio equipment on site. Another big selling point of joining the club is the free fitness training, which is unlimited with all memberships.

      “We have a black card spa. Inside the spa, with this one being one of the bigger ones in Canada, it is going to have five tanning beds or booths, which are level two tanning beds that are brand new,” Arden said. “This facility also has a new type of bed called a hybrid bed and combines red light therapy and tanning at the same time.”

      The black card spa also includes total body enhancement, tissue massage chairs, hydro loungers and more.

      SAUGUS ― The new Planet Fitness coming to Broadway is planning on opening in late December, according to the company.

       

      Once open, the new club will be open and staffed 24 hours on weekdays, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The new gym in Saugus is nearly 27, sq. feet and features state-of-the-art pieces of cardio equipment, pieces of expansive strength and free weights equipment, free fitness training, a training area equipped with the PF minute Express Circuit, a PF SYNRGY Functional Training System including TRX equipment, kettlebells, and much more.

       

      On top of that, Black Card members can take advantage of four salon-grade tanning beds, two red-light therapy booths, two HydroMassage loungers, and two massage chairs.

    UPDATE: A Planet Fitness representative reached out to clarify the gym&#;s dress code. "All gyms are required to have signage on the wall that states the policy," the representative wrote in an email, "which is that jeans, boots, sandals, or string tank tops (men’s muscle T-shirts) are not allowed. In the Brooklyn club, the sign is posted in the lobby area." Additionally, over the phone, the representative said that at the PF location at which I was a member, there will be an increased staff presence by the women&#;s locker room.     I’ve never been a gym rat, so when I needed a place to (occasionally) exercise, I looked for the option that went softest on my paycheck. My local Planet Fitness charged no initiation fee and was only $10 a month — a bare-bones affair with no towels, toiletries, or a juice bar. But it wasn’t the ascetic state of locker-room amenities that ultimately made me uncomfortable heading to my gym. It was the men. After nine months of getting catcalled at PF, I finally quit last week. I’m not one who offends easily or even someone who&#;s persuaded easily. (See office air conditioning.) But, the environment at Planet Fitness made me extremely uncomfortable, and it was clear that this is a situation where men’s comfort is valued over women’s. I&#;m not the only one who has experienced this. Margaret, a year-old administrative professional also living in New York City describes how a guy at a different gym “looked me up and down and commented on how he liked my yoga pants. Employees at my gym were in plain view.” The man then grabbed Margaret’s phone, insisting they exchange numbers, even though she vocally refused his advances. A few days later, Margaret mentioned the incident to her trainer. “She had heard that this man approached women at the gym,” Margaret adds. So why was he still allowed back? At the PF that I just quit, the women’s locker rooms are located on the bottom floor, all the way at the back of the gym. To access them, women have to walk by the heavy-weights section — a place frequented, at my particular branch, mostly by men. (Shout out to the badass women lifting 25 million pounds in there, though. You are my heroes.) On any given day, there’d be anywhere rabobank secure login seven to 10 dudes along my walk. What this meant for me is that every time I wanted to get to the locker room, I would walk the length of an entire gym floor in front of a group consisting almost entirely of bros. Sometimes, nothing happened.     Part of the reason I’d joined Planet Fitness is because calling out obnoxious behavior is part of its mission statement. Its tagline is “a judgement-free zone.” It has a “lunk alarm” near its free-weight section, which supposedly goes off when a guy is trying to show off and drop weights that are too heavy for him. And yet, I’ve never felt more judged than within that gym&#;s walls — and all I was stride bank and chime was walking to the locker room. Last month, during what would end up being my final trip to the gym, the catcalling pushed me over the edge. In addition to the usual commenting from weight lifters, a guy actually stopped working out and noticeably stared at me each time I passed him, his head pivoting like that girl from The Exorcist. In this moment, I knew it was time to speak up. I was just so tired of having to navigate these dudes, day in and day out. So I emailed PF about the problem — twice. And then I waited. About two weeks after I filed my complaint, Peter, the district manager for NYC PF locations, called me. I suggested that perhaps PF could simply turn the weight machines away from the women’s locker room, so that men aren’t essentially lined up staring at any woman who needs to change her clothes or pee. But Peter said that would mean guys working out would have to face each other — a situation “just as uncomfortable” for them as what I was experiencing. I asked Peter why there couldn’t be some signage around the facility regarding my issue, MTA-style — anything that could show Planet Fitness was taking me seriously, as it so often claimed, and that it acknowledged the problem. He assured me he took my catcalling concerns very seriously. He said he&#;d speak to the management at my location and then follow up with me. I never heard back from him. It seems that Peter didn’t communicate to his team that we had spoken, because a few minutes later, I received an email from PF’s social media team. (I had tweeted at them when days went by with no responses to my emails.) Planet fitness is it open today Peter’s reaction to my complaint had been cringeworthy, the social media team’s response was totally unacceptable. A social media representative from Planet Fitness said that maybe I should consider “coming to the gym a little earlier or later to avoid the rush of male members.” So, I should change my workout schedule to work around the problem. In that moment, it became clear that this gym values the comfort of male members above that of female members.

    Maybe I shouldn&#;t feel surprised. After all, this is the same gym where, according to the dress code, “women can’t wear sport bras as their only top, and their tank tops should not be overly revealing.” There’s no language about restrictions on men. (The social media representative happily confirmed this for me.) I terminated my membership the next Monday. Sadly, I’m not alone in having to leave my gym due to harassment. Courtney Y., a year-old executive assistant, also left her non-PF gym because of blatant catcalling by a gym employee. After a workout class, a male employee came in to offer everyone refrigerated eucalyptus towels — and to sell more memberships to those who were there on a trial basis. “This man looks at me, points his finger in my face, and says, ‘I’ll give her a special discount, because I think she’s really hot. I just love her face,’” Courtney says, adding that not a single employee addressed this behavior. She now works out at a different gym, does some yoga at home, and looks for classes at different locations. “Groupon is my friend,” she adds. I find myself at a loss about what to do next. This experience has kind of turned me off from gyms entirely. Why pay a fee to make myself feel uncomfortable? And why should I be limited in where I work out just because some sexist fools can&#;t control themselves? For now, I’ll be on the hunt for a place that five nights at freddys shirts a mostly female population, a more accessible locker room, and no dress code.
