JPMorgan Chase's culture is shifting when it comes to inclusivity, hiring practices and acceptance of people who think differently. It's Autism Inclusion Month at the firm, and we're taking a look at the critical and important contributions of people who are neurodiverse.

With us today is the Global Head of Autism at Work, Anthony Pacilio, and JPMorgan Chase's software and performance engineer Jesse Collins. Thank you both for being here today.

Anthony, let's start with you. Why is a program like Autism at Work so critical? And how has the program influenced productivity and inclusivity at the firm?

ANHTONY PACILIO:

Yeah, great question. So when we started this program, it was out of business necessity. We were looking for a different type of talent. And at that time, we just didn't have enough of the talent in the IT space. So what happened was we understood that folks on the spectrum were knocking it out of the park in other companies and corporations. And so we decided to bring that here to JPMorgan Chase.

We've gone from four folks in the program in to over today, in nine countries, in 40 different job roles. Some of the job roles that we have, folks on the spectrum are outperforming 90% to % of their peers and colleagues. So that speaks volume to the breadth of talent that we're bringing in.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

Absolutely. And Jesse, you were diagnosed with autism at age And you made the complete career shift from social work to the work you're doing today at JPMorgan Chase. How did a program like Autism at Work help make that career change?

JESSE COLLINS:

Yeah, Christina, I was diagnosed with autism at age Growing up, I struggled with social cues and understanding facial expressions. And it became more apparent as I got older that my brain just simply assessed information and situations differently than others.

While my wife and I were dating, we had a conversation one night about the possibility of me being on the autism spectrum. And she encouraged me further to talk to my doctor, which ultimately led to my diagnosis. My diagnosis simply gave us more language and tools to help us navigate our lives together.

And I'm happy to share that we've been married now for almost three years and expecting a daughter, Zofia Rose, in May. Through our conversations after my diagnosis, we found the Autism at Work program. The program gave me access to the training and guidance I needed to shift careers and, most importantly, provided me with the necessary support and encouragement.

Too often, being different is seen as something bad or that should be hidden. But that couldn't be more wrong. Being different is a good thing. And the Autism at Work program has helped myself at J.P. Morgan recognize that neurodiversity is a true asset and something that should be celebrated.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

That's such an important message. And by the way, congratulations to you and your wife and growing family. That's so exciting.

JESSE COLLINS:

Anthony, you've mentioned that people who are part of the program can bring their full selves to work. How have you seen the corporate culture change because of the program?

ANTHONY PACILIO:

Yeah. I mean, listen, 80% of the folks who are on the spectrum are unemployed or underemployed. So this is giving them the opportunity to come in, bring their whole selves to work, as you said, but kind of take the mask off that they might've had to utilize their entire life.

The empathy has increased. And I think the social awareness, obviously, has increased. And I think when you bring somebody in who's on the spectrum or thinks differently or has a cognitive difference, I think when you bring those folks on your team, it kind of sets you apart because now you're looking at things in a totally different light. And then people get comfortable.

And one of the misconceptions is folks on the spectrum are not social. I can tell you from firsthand experience — Jesse's a prime example of that — that is not the case. We have people leading team meetings and scrum meetings and doing different things in operations areas.

Managers are also learning different techniques and ways that they're able to communicate with their teams. It's because they're learning with somebody who's on the spectrum that there's different ways to do that.

And if we take an example of somebody who’s getting performance feedback and it's not sinking in, we try a different technique to do that. Whether it's bringing in an advocate to help out or just trying a different methodology via Skype or chat or whatever that may be. So it's actually increasing how we talk to colleagues who are neurotypical as well.

The culture shift that we have now at JPMorgan Chase because of the program is absolutely unbelievable. We have many other companies and corporations asking us how we did the program. And we said we started small, and now we're scaling it to where it is one of the leading ones in the world.

CHRISTINA DELLO BUONO:

And, Jesse, back over to you. What advice would you give other companies who are looking to hire people who are neurodiverse? And what can people do to embrace the neurodiverse culture even more?

JESSE COLLINS:

Yeah. If you're looking to increase your neurodiversity, I think it's important to set up the programs that go beyond recruitment. It's important to set up training programs similar to how Autism at Work has established them for JPMorgan Chase. That informs colleagues and managers on how they can reframe their practices to be more inclusive. And alleviates the burden off of the individual to have to disclose and educate others on their diagnosis, which can be really difficult and anxiety-provoking.

Additionally, it's important to address the physical work environment too. When we were in the office and we had office spaces, like alternative office seating and lower lighting and designated quiet zones, those things can be really helpful to somebody who has sensory sensitivities like myself.

In general, creating a work environment that celebrates differences in thought, hosting conversations about neurodiversity — not only during Autism Inclusion Month but throughout the year — and being more conscious of practices and languages that may be unintentionally exclusive are ways that we can all build a more diverse and inclusive work environment.

Can I add my EIP Card to a peer-to-peer (P2P) payment app to send funds to another person?

Yes, most P2P apps (like Venmo or Zelle) will accept your EIP Card as a source of funding. Check with the P2P provider for specific instructions.

Additional Card Information
Will the Treasury Department be able to see how I spend my Economic Impact Payment?

No. Under the Right to Financial Privacy Act, the federal government is not allowed to ask the card issuer about your Card account and the card issuer is not allowed to give the government information about your Card account without your written permission, except under very limited circumstances.

What is the difference between the EIP Card and a traditional debit card?

Unlike a bank debit card, your EIP Card is not linked to an individual checking account. Instead, your EIP Card enables you to access your EIP funds and then each purchase you make is deducted from those funds.

What is the difference between the EIP Card and a credit card?

When you use a credit card, you are borrowing money and building up a balance of debt. With your EIP Card, you are not borrowing and will not have to pay anything back. You are spending money given to you by the government that you can access with your Card. Unlike credit cards, there is no credit check to get the EIP Card, you won’t incur interest charges or accrue debt, and the card will not show up on your credit report.

Will using the EIP Card impact my credit score?

No. This is not a credit card and will not affect your credit score.

Can the government withdraw funds from my EIP Card? (updated January 4, )

No. The funds loaded on to the EIP Card belong to you and you are the only one who can access or use the money.

Is the EIP Card linked to my bank account?

No. The EIP Card and the funds loaded onto it are separate from any bank account you may have.

Am I able to order an additional EIP Card for a family member?

No. Only one Card is provided. Additional Cards are not available for family members.

I received a notice to activate my EIP Card, but I do not have a Card, what should I do? (updated March 30, )

If you haven’t received your EIP Card, or if you may have accidentally thrown it away, please call Customer Service at and choose the option for assistance with a replacement, reissue, lost, or stolen Card. If you have misplaced your Card, you can lock your Card by logging in online at mynewextsetup.us to prevent unauthorized transactions or ATM withdrawals while you look for it. If your Card is permanently lost, it is important that you call Customer Service at and choose the option for assistance with a replacement, reissue, lost, or stolen Card. Your lost or stolen Card will be deactivated to prevent anyone from using it and, upon your request, a replacement Card can be provided at no cost to you. For Cards with more than one name, only the primary Cardholder (listed first on the Card) must make the call. In a few instances, the first name of one payee is linked to the last name of a second payee on the Card. For mismatched names, the payee with the first name on the first line may should make the call.

Why is there a &#;pending transaction&#; on my EIP Card?

Pending Transactions are transactions (such as point-of-sale (POS) purchases, ATM withdrawal, transfer of funds, etc.) that have been made with your Card but have not yet cleared your Account. Typically, merchants settle outstanding transactions at the end of the day, however, settlement policies vary by merchant. While a transaction is pending, the funds will not be available for your use.

What happens if I try to use my EIP Card for a purchase that is more than my available balance?

If there is not enough money in your Available Account Balance to cover a purchase, the transaction may be declined or partially authorized. To complete the purchase, you need to either use another form of payment or attempt a transaction equal to or less than the available balance of the Card account.

What should I do if my EIP Card is declined?

First, you should check your available account balance to see if you have sufficient money available and check the expiration date on your Card to see if it is still valid. If you have sufficient money and your Card is still valid, call the number on the back of your Card for assistance.

Where are the funds on my Card held? (updated March 17, )

The U.S. Department of the Treasury will place your funds with MetaBank, N.A., who will act as custodian of your funds. Once you activate your Card in accordance with the instructions above under the section heading 'Getting Started,' you are authorizing MetaBank, N.A., as custodian, to hold your funds until transferred or spent by you at MetaBank, N.A. or one or more participating FDIC-insured banks (each bank identified below is referred to as a Program Bank).

Program Banks as of March 17, are:

How do I protect my funds from fraud?

Be on the lookout for IRS impersonation calls, texts and email phishing attempts about the coronavirus or COVID Economic Impact Payments. These scams can lead to tax-related fraud and identity theft. To learn more about what you should know about fraud, click here.

Can I use a PIN of my own choice?

Yes, you can use a four-digit number of your choice. Remember, your PIN keeps your Account and the money in it secure. You should never give your PIN to anyone for any reason, not even to someone you trust. Also for your Account security, do not use personal information as your PIN.

What should I do if I forget my PIN? (updated March 17, )

Call Customer Service at , select your language and select the prompt for Customer Service. Then, follow the menu prompts to create a new PIN. You will need your digit EIP Card number in order to process a PIN change. Once updated, your new PIN will be active immediately.

Why is there a hold on my money?

Certain types of purchases (gas stations, hotels, car rentals, restaurants, etc.) require a pre-authorization that temporarily puts a hold on your Card balance that could be greater than the transaction amount. Once processed, the money will be released and your balance will be adjusted. Pre-authorized funds may take up to 7 days to be released back to your Card account balance (up to 31 days for car rentals).

What do I do if I believe an error has been made or do not recognize or did not authorize a transaction?

If you believe an error has been made or have questions about your Account, call the Customer Service number at to begin the dispute process. For Cards with more than one name, only the primary Cardholder (listed first on the Card) may start the dispute process. For additional information regarding unauthorized transactions, please see your Cardholder Agreement online at mynewextsetup.us for more information.

How does the Visa Zero Liability work?

Your EIP Card will arrive in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Treasury seal and includes “Economic Impact Payment Card” in the return address. The envelope also states that it contains “Important information about your Economic Impact Payment.” The Visa® name will appear on the front of the Card; the back of the Card has the name of the issuing bank, MetaBank®, N.A. Information included with the Card will explain that the Card is your EIP Card.

Why did I receive an EIP Card?

You received an EIP Card because you are eligible for an Economic Impact Payment and the IRS did not have your bank account information. The EIP Card allows you to quickly access your Economic Impact Payment.

How was my Economic Impact Payment amount calculated?

Will my round three payment be deposited, or loaded, on to my round one or two EIP Card? (updated March 30, )

No. EIP Cards issued for the first or second round of Economic Impact Payments are not being reloaded. If you received EIP Cards for round one or round two stimulus payments, they all have separate balances, and you should keep those earlier EIP Cards until the balance for each EIP Card reaches zero.

I received my first or second round of Economic Impact Payments on an EIP Card, should I expect to receive my third round payment on an EIP Card? (updated March 17, )

If you are eligible to receive a third round payment, the form of payment for the third mailed Economic Impact Payment may be different than for the first or second mailed Economic Impact Payment. Some people who received a paper check previously might receive a debit card this time, and some people who received a debit card previously may receive a paper check.

How do I activate my EIP Card? (updated March 30, )

Call During activation, you will be asked to input your Card Number, last 6-digits of your social security number and the 3-digit security code from the back of your Card. You could be asked to further validate your identity by providing, at minimum, your name and address and answer identity verification questions.

You will also be asked to create a 4-digit PIN required for ATM transactions, request automated assistance and to hear your balance. For your Account security, do not use personal information as your PIN. For Cards with more than one name, only the primary Cardholder (listed first on the Card) may activate the Card.

How do I set up a User ID and Password for online access?

Go to mynewextsetup.us Click “Login” and then “Register Now.” Follow the steps to create your User ID and Password. Be sure to have your EIP Card handy. You can use the same User ID and Password created for online access to access the Money Network® Mobile App2. I received a message that my phone number was blocked when I called What can I do? (updated February 2, )

EIP Card Customer Service is unable to address phone calls from blocked telephone numbers, which could be caused by a setting with your carrier or on your mobile phone. You may change this setting with your carrier or on your mobile phone. Or, you may call us back from an unblocked number.

You can use your Card securely and without a fee1 to make purchases anywhere Visa® Debit Cards are accepted — in stores, online or over the phone. You can also use your EIP Card to pay bills3, get cash back with a PIN debit purchase (where available), and get cash from an in-network ATMs Nationwide that carry the AllPoint or MoneyPass brands.1

Can I use my EIP Card to make purchases online?

Yes, you can use your Card to make purchases if the merchant’s website accepts Visa Debit Card payments. You will need to enter your EIP Card information: digit card number, expiration date and 3-digit code from the Card back. Make sure you have used the correct billing address associated with your Card account. To review or change your billing address, log in to your Card account online at mynewextsetup.us and click on My Profile. For Cards with more than one name, the primary Cardholder name (listed first on the Card) may be required to complete the online purchase.

Can I use my EIP Card to buy groceries and make other purchases at stores?

Yes, you can use your Card to make purchases at stores accepting Visa Debit Cards. To purchase gas using your EIP Card, you should give your Card to the attendant to pre-pay for gas in order to avoid a pre-authorization. As with most debit cards, if you pay at the pump, merchants will pre-authorize your purchase, which temporarily puts a hold on your Card balance that could be greater than the transaction amount. Once processed, the money will be released, and your balance will be adjusted. Pre-authorized funds may take up to 7 business days to be released back to your Card account balance.

Each time you write a Money Network® Check you should check your balance by logging in online at mynewextsetup.us to ensure you can cover the Check amount. Write today's date and the dollar amount on the Check. Write a name in PAY TO THE ORDER OF. Call the number on the back of your Card to access your Account and select the Money Network Check option. Enter the CHECK NUMBER and the DIGIT, then enter the amount you wrote on the Check without the decimal point and press '#'. Write the ISSUER NUMBER and TRANSACTION NUMBER provided by the automated phone system. Your finished Check's amount will be deducted immediately from your Account.

Can I use my EIP Card to make recurring payments?

Yes, you can use your Card for recurring bill payments; however, you must ensure you have sufficient funds to cover the entire bill. If you have insufficient funds, then your payment may be declined or partially authorized. To complete the purchase, you need to either use another form of payment or attempt a transaction equal to or less than the available balance of the Card account.

Bank/Teller Over-the-Counter Cash Withdrawal

The US Department of the Treasury and the IRS are working hard to get a second round of Economic Impact Payments (EIP) to people. You might have already gotten your payment direct deposited into your bank account. That started on December 29th. You might have gotten a check in the mail. But, like last time, some people will get their payment in the mail on an EIP VISA debit card. Don’t be surprised if the way you get this second round of payments is different than the first time. Whichever way you get your payment, it’s all money the government wants you to have, and quickly. So: if you qualify for an Economic Impact Payment, look at your bank account for a direct deposit, keep an eye out for a check in the mail, or watch your mailbox carefully this month for an EIP Visa debit card.

With checks, you know the drill: get the check, deposit the check. Since you might not have gotten money on a VISA debit card before, here’s a bit more info. The EIP VISA debit card will come in an envelope that looks like this:

If you got an EIP VISA debit card in the mail, here’s what to do.

  • Activate the EIP VISA debit card right away by calling To activate your card, you’ll have to give the last six digits of your Social Security number. Once the card is activated, you can use it anywhere that accepts VISA debit cards, including online or in a store, or at an ATM to get cash. You also can transfer the money from the card to your personal bank account without fees. Keep in mind that the EIP debit cards will expire after three years. If that happens, call customer service to request the funds be sent to you as a check.
