The Best BB/CC Creams That Have SPF Protection

Situated next to the traditional foundations and tinted moisturizers at your favorite makeup store, you will find a selection of BB creams and CC creams. There's a lot of confusion when it comes to the difference between BB and CC creams and what the purpose of each option is.

These handy multipurpose products might make mornings easier and reduce your beauty spending, but what exactly do they do and which is best for your skin?

According to Healthline, both BB and CC creams offer multipurpose uses, entwining makeup with skincare in a single tube. Both BB and CC creams can be used to prime the skin, conceal blemishes and imperfections, highlight the skin, hydrate, mattify the complexion, act as a makeup base, and most importantly, offer SPF protection.

As per Byrdie, BB cream is a "beauty balm" which is designed to provide sheer coverage, making it ideal for covering small blemishes and evening out your complexion. Whereas, a CC cream is a color corrector and offers slightly more coverage than a BB product.

Something that both BB and CC creams have in common is that all of the best ones offer incorporated SPF protection for skin.

It can be confusing knowing which to choose; tinted moisturiser, cc cream – and now there’s bb cream too…. A whole array of skin perfecting creams, many of them claiming to do “everything”; but which should you choose? Simply, it’s all about coverage.

Tinted Moisturisers

Tinted moisturiser is simply a moisturiser with a tint.  This gives the lightest coverage, resulting in a sheer finish. If you’re not used to wearing foundation or make up but want something to give your skin a healthier tone, or brighten it up just a little, this is the product for you. However; don’t get too attached; while still popular, they are being edged out of the market by products with more active ingredients. It’s also important not to get carried away by the tint; you are using this product as a moisturiser, and if it is the only thing you put on your face it should ideally contain an SPF of 30 or above, particularly at this time of year.

CC Creams

CC creams are colour correcting creams; and contain more pigment.  They provide more colour and therefore better coverage, rather like a medium foundation.  If you suffer from rosacea, dark spots or have scarring from previous acne, then cc creams will give a better base cover than a tinted moisturiser.  Many profess to be all-in-one moisturisers, anti-ageing creams and sun protectors, but it is important to check the ingredient list to see exactly which the product contains. The biggest concern with cc creams is that although many contain SPF, they are heavier than a moisturiser, so you will not apply them in them same quantity.  This may result in inadequate sun protection.

If you are uncertain, it’s always best to speak to a cosmetic consultant from a skin care range – you don’t necessarily have to buy their product, most will be happy for you to have a tester to see if the cream suits your skin. They can advise you on how best to achieve the result you are looking for.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Foundation Full Coverage Tinted Moisturizer

This product is a bit of an outlier, because it is a full coverage tinted moisturizer. Yes, I have used this, and I can confirm that it is full coverage.

A huge plus to this product is the SPF Most makeup products do not have nearly that level of sunscreen in them.

The downside to this product is the shade range. There are only 12 shades available, and because of the level of pigment in this product, there isn&#;t much flexibility with those shades. However, if you can find your shade, you might really love this &#; and possibly replace your normal foundation with it!

The makeup world is oversaturated with products promising you a smooth, unblemished complexion. BB and CC creams receive a lot of buzz, particularly during the warmer months when people are shedding layers and swapping heavier makeup in favor of sheerer options that give a more natural “no-makeup" look—and they're less likely to streak when sweat beads up and runs. These formulas also tend to include extra ingredients such as vitamins and antioxidants aimed to solve skin problems, as well as sunscreen, which is more effective in these products than in foundation.

Before you begin sifting through the alphabet soup of BB and CC creams at your local drugstore or Sephora, you should understand the differences between these alliteratively named products, as well as where tinted moisturizers and foundations fall into the mix. The main distinction is the level of coverage you get: Tinted moisturizers typically are the lightest, followed by BB and CC creams, respectively, and then foundation. Here’s what else you should know.

What is a BB cream?

BB, or beauty balm (sometimes called “blemish” balm), creams are less pigmented compared to CC creams or foundations and therefore provide less coverage on the skin. These creams boast that they're skincare and makeup in one because they typically incorporate antioxidants, moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, and sunscreen. While SPF in makeup is not typically enough to protect your skin from the sun, SPF in a BB cream is more effective because of how you apply it, according to Suzanne Friedler, a board-certified fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology based in New York City. Friedler says that using a foundation usually requires layers of moisturizer and primer underneath, which dilute the SPF in the foundation, while BB creams stand alone without these added steps.

Top-rated BB creams to try
Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12 Hour Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($37 on Ulta)
NYX BB Cream ($13 on Ulta)
Dr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45 ($39 on Sephora)

What is a CC cream?

“Color correcting” CC creams, like BB creams, offer coverage plus moisturizers and more. They contain more pigment than BB creams to mask discoloration on the skin (redness, sallowness, etc.). Many also contain light-diffusing particles to enhance this effect. Friedler says the best way to choose between a BB and CC cream is to decide how much coverage you want. “As you get older, people tend to want heavier coverage,” says Friedler. A light or even medium coverage foundation might have the same opacity and ability to conceal uneven skin tone and blemishes, but will generally lack the other skin-benefitting ingredients of CC creams.

Top-rated CC creams to try
IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream with SPF 50+ ($39 on Sephora)
Supergoop! CC Cream Daily Correct Broad Spectrum SPF 35+ Sunscreen ($34 on Sephora)
Thrive Causemetics Buildable Blur CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 35 ($38 on Thrive Causemetics)

How does tinted moisturizer compare to BB and CC creams?

A tinted moisturizer is exactly what it sounds like: a moisturizer with some pigmentation to help even the complexion. Tinted moisturizers offer the least coverage and are sheerest compared to BB creams, CC creams, and foundations. Their main purpose is to hydrate the skin, but like BB and CC creams, they may also contain skin-nourishing and protecting ingredients like SPF. A tinted moisturizer is a great choice for someone with dry skin who wants a two-in-one product that can make the skin tone appear a little more even.

Top-rated tinted moisturizers to try
Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($45 on Sephora)
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Aging Perfector ($ on Target)
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 ($46 on Sephora)

How does foundation compare to BB and CC creams?

There are hundreds of different foundations out there, ranging from sheer to full coverage and suited for different skin types (dry, oily, combination, sensitive, acne-prone, and more). They come in a multitude of textures, too, that affect ease of application and amount of opacity: liquid, pressed powder, stick, cream, mineral, whipped, and spray. Foundations are great if your one and only goal is to make your face appear even and blemish-free, but they are not specifically designed to be moisturizing or nourishing the way that tinted moisturizers and BB and CC creams are. If the foundation has SPF, you also may have to apply more product than you would with a tinted moisturizer, BB, or CC cream to get the protection you expect.

When I was young I had some mild acne and now as I age, I have a mix of oily skin and a few lines. So it can be tricky to find the right combination of coverage. I also like my makeup routine to be easy and fast. With of course amazing results (who doesn't?).

Recently I spoke with Denee Noel Makeup Artist and Cosmetics Sales Manager at Holt Renfrew. Denee shared with me her top tips on how to use BB and CC creams for easy quick coverage for women on the go.

What is the difference between a BB cream, CC cream and a tinted moisturizer?

Beauty Balms or BB Creams are all of the rage now. BB creams were invented to fill a gap that was desperately needed in the cosmetics industry. Women everywhere wanted a product that hydrated, had coverage and felt weightless on the skin. Now that so many brands have created their version of BB creams, textures and finishes vary.

Ultimately, a BB cream and a tinted moisturizer are one in the same. Colour Correctors or CC creams were invented to correct any imperfections on the skin such as hyperpigmentation. CC creams help to hide and correct the skin. With a CC cream you are also getting a treatment and they are phenomenal as primers!!

How to choose the best BB or CC cream or tinted moisturizers for your skin type?

To choose the best BB, CC or tinted moisturizer for you consider two things:

1. How much coverage would you like?

2. What type of skin do you have?

Because BB's and CC's are available in a wide variety of finishes and coverages now, these 2 questions will help you narrow down the field. I strongly suggest to get samples. Wear the product for an entire day without powder. At the end of the day how does your skin look? Is the coverage still there? Are you less or more oily or dry? The product you try that feels the most natural and ticks all of the boxes is the one for you!

When do you use a BB cream -- for day or evening or for sports?

BB's and CC's are great for everyone! Try layering your CC cream and BB together to treat discolouration, even out skintone, prime the skin, boost hydration AND have a natural finish to the skin. Who doesn't want that?!?!

What is the best way to apply a BB cream? With a sponge or brush or fingertips?

In my opinion, the best way to apply BB and CC is with your hands. Not only is the product slightly warmed so it gently melts into the skin, but also while you are gently massaging and tapping the product on, you can assess your skin and easily identify and dry or dehydrated areas. When you are finished you can use a brush to gently buff the skin.

What are your top tips for applying a BB cream? Does it need to be reapplied throughout the day?

I am a HUGE fan of skin. Make sure that you are cleansing, toning (alcohol-free of course) and moisturizing. Great skin is the perfect base! Then apply a CC cream.

Then use gentle circular motions to apply your favorite BB cream. The great thing about my favorite BB creams is that coverage is buildable so where you think you need more coverage gently tap a little more product on and gently buff with your brush.

Any other tips about BB creams and the spring and summer season?

Proper preparation of the skin means that you will get longer wear out of your BB cream, so spend the extra time preparing the skin, so that you do not have to touch up as often later in the day.

I am going to use these helpful tips as I continue to expand by beauty ideas this spring! I love the idea of smooth glowing skin.

Your suggestions are always welcome, as I continue on my journey to live life to the fullest. Let's have the very best !

The best tinted moisturizers are multitaskers that rise to the challenge of hydrating and protecting your skin from sun damage, while also helping you look a little more polished in the process. If you want glowier skin without the heavy coverage of a full foundation, you may want to consider adding one to your routine.

“The simplest way to think of tinted moisturizer is as a regular moisturizer plus pigment,” says Uchenna Okereke, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist in Boston. Depending on your skin needs, the pigment could be used for color correction or simply to add a glow to your natural skin tone.

They also come in many forms, the simplest being a face moisturizer with an added skin tint for a natural glow (that can feel like a light foundation) and usually some SPF component. There are also moisturizing makeup slash skin-care products like BB creams and CC creams that share the moisturizing properties of a moisturizer and the blurring, color-correcting effects of a sheer foundation. You'll usually find added SPF benefits in those too.

Just remember that while many of these products do have some element of sunscreen protection, you probably don't want to stop there. Dermatologists typically recommend that people wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. They also note that while BB creams and CC creams can provide some sun protection, you're still going to get the best coverage (especially if you'll be in the sun for extended periods of time) if you layer a dedicated sunscreen on top.

When you’re choosing a tinted moisturizer, a good place to start is with your skin type, says Dr. Okereke. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, go for one that’s oil-free and non-comedogenic (i.e. it's been formulated to avoid clogging pores). Or, steer clear of fragrance or harsh ingredients that could cause irritation, like alcohol or witch hazel, if you have sensitive skin. For normal, combination, or dry skin, Dr. Okereke recommends tinted moisturizers with hydrating ingredients, like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, or squalane.

If you’re ready to add tinted moisturizer to your morning routine, here are some of the best tinted moisturizers that come with the seal of approval from dermatologists and makeup artists.

By now you're probably familiar with the term BB cream (short for beauty balms), but still might be unsure of why you should choose one over a tinted moisturizer. Jackie Gomez, a celebrity makeup artist in NYC, knows a thing or two about both formulas and explained the difference to us.

"BB creams are your all-in-one product because they're a combination of SPF, primer, and anti-aging ingredients—plus, they offer light to medium coverage," says Gomez. "Whereas a tinted moisturizer's biggest job is to provide hydration, minimal coverage, and sometimes sun protection."

But while Gomez uses both on celebrities and models alike, if she wants a formula to last—especially on hot summer days—she picks a BB cream over a tinted moisturizer. Why? "The built-in primer gives it staying power, so it doesn't fade off," she adds.

Makeup Glossary

Tinted Moisturizer

Tinted moisturizers are simply moisturizers that contain pigments in various skin tones. The result is a moisturizer that is &#;tinted&#; the same color as your skin, with sheer to light coverage.

Similar to foundation, it is intended to be worn on the face as a base makeup product to gently even out discoloration and blemishes on the skin.

Because tinted moisturizers have little coverage, companies produce less variety of shades than they do for foundations. The sheer level of coverage makes them more flexible, and one shade is able to be worn by a small range of skin tones instead of only a specific tone and undertone.

Since it is also a moisturizer, there is an added bonus of hydration for your skin.

How to Apply Tinted Moisturizer

Tinted moisturizer can be applied with a makeup brush, a makeup sponge, or with your (clean) fingers.

I find that the best makeup brushes to use are dense foundation brushes used to buff and blend in base products.

If you use a makeup sponge to apply and blend it out, remember to dampen the sponge before use. This will help the sponge blend the product easier and prevent the sponge from absorbing too much product.

I personally like to use a combination of tools to apply tinted moisturizer to my skin. First I apply the product to my face with either a foundation brush or my fingers, then I use a damp makeup sponge to blend and remove any brush strokes.

Tinted moisturizer should be applied over the entire face in an even layer. Don&#;t forget to blend some product on your jawline and down your neck to ensure it matches your body!

Tinted Moisturizer vs Foundation

These two face base products are similar, but have key differences.

Both products are base makeup products intended to be worn over the entire face to even out skin tone, reduce the appearance of blemishes, and are available in a variety of shades and coverage levels.

Foundations are primarily makeup products, and not skincare. Tinted moisturizer is both makeup and skincare; because it is a moisturizer, it will hydrate your skin.

Additionally, foundations are available in a wider range of coverage levels, from lightweight foundations to full coverage (meaning it completely covers your skin). While a few tinted moisturizers may reach medium coverage, the vast majority are sheer to light coverage.

Both tinted moisturizers and foundations are great products, and I personally alternate between using both types.

Tinted Moisturizer vs BB Cream vs CC Cream

BB creams are generally quite similar to tinted moisturizers. The name stands for &#;blemish balm&#; or &#;beauty balm.&#;

Similar to the moisturizers, BB creams combine both sheer to light pigment and moisturizer into one product. BB creams usually include sunscreen, as well. They are sometimes marketed as &#;all-in-one&#; products.

CC creams were created after BB creams. They sometimes stand for &#;color correcting&#; creams, but the term &#;CC&#; is most often used to signify a more-pigmented BB cream. Yep, they are just BB creams with (usually) medium level coverage.

Tinted moisturizers, while also including pigment and moisturizer like BB and CC creams, do not always contain sunscreen. But sometimes they do contain sunscreen&#; So what makes them different than a BB or CC cream?

The answer is marketing. There are some differences in ingredients, and BB/CC creams are usually more &#;skincare-y,&#; but all three product types will perform essentially the same on your skin and fulfill the same purpose in a makeup routine.

Product Recommendations

Colourpop Pretty Fresh

For an affordable, everyday product, I highly recommend the Colourpop Pretty Fresh Hyaluronic Acid Tinted Moisturizer.

This is my personal favorite tinted moisturizer that I use for daily makeup. It has light coverage, is long wear, and works great with my combination skin &#; both in the summertime heat and during my wintertime dryness.

If you want to increase the wear and coverage slightly, pairing with a tinted powder is amazing, too! I usually do not set this with powder in order to achieve a natural dewy look, and I only use setting spray on top. It still lasts all day and wears well under masks. Available in 21 shades.
