Fidelity® Rewards Visa Signature® Card

We may change APRs, fees, and other Account terms in the future based on your experience with Elan Financial Services and its affiliates as provided under the Cardmember Agreement and applicable law.

1. You will earn 2 Points per dollar in eligible net purchases (net purchases are purchases minus credits and returns) that you charge. Account must be open and in good standing to earn and redeem rewards and benefits. Upon approval, refer to your Program Rules for additional information. You may not redeem Reward Points, and you will immediately lose all of your Reward Points, if your Account is closed to future transactions (including, but not limited to, due to Program misuse, failure to pay, bankruptcy, or death). Reward Points will not expire as long as your Account remains open. Certain transactions are not eligible for Reward Points, including Advances (as defined in the Agreement, including wire transfers, travelers checks, money orders, foreign cash transactions, betting transactions, lottery tickets and ATM disbursements), Annual Fee, convenience checks, balance transfers, unauthorized or fraudulent charges, overdraft advances, interest charges, fees, credit insurance charges, transactions to fund certain prepaid card products, U.S. Mint purchases, or transactions to purchase cash convertible items. The 2% cash back rewards value applies only to Points redeemed for a deposit into an eligible Fidelity account. The redemption value is different if you choose to redeem your Points for other rewards such as travel options, merchandise, gift cards, and/or statement credit. Other restrictions apply. Full details appear in the Program Rules new card customers receive with their card. Establishment or ownership of a Fidelity account or other relationship with Fidelity Investments is not required to obtain a card or to be eligible to use Points to obtain any rewards offered under the program other than Fidelity Rewards.

Because the interest and other fees charged on any outstanding balance are greater than the cash value of the rewards points, you may pay more in fees and interest than the value of the points you earn if you do not pay your bill in full each month.

To receive a deposit, you must link your eligible Fidelity® account to your card. This can be accomplished in any of following ways. 1. You may contact Elan Financial Services Customer Service at the toll-free phone number located on the back of your credit card and provide them with your eligible Fidelity® account (s) number. 2. Simply select the “Manage Reward Points” hyperlink from the credit card snapshot page on and follow the easy steps. You may also watch a brief video that describes the linking process on the credit card snapshot page also found on Please note that automatic redemptions will occur on a monthly basis as long as you have reached the point redemption threshold of 2, Points.

Eligible accounts include most nonretirement registrations as well as Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, Rollover IRA, SEP IRA, Fidelity Charitable® Giving Account®, Fidelity HSA®, and Fidelity®-managed College Savings Plan accounts. The ability to contribute to an IRA or college savings plan account is subject to IRS rules and specific program policies, including those on eligibility and annual and maximum contribution limits. Full details appear in the Program Guidelines new card customers receive with their card. Contributions to Fidelity Charitable® are generally eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction. Please consult with your tax advisor. The list of eligible registration types may change without notice at Fidelity’s sole discretion. The Benefits of Using a Credit Card

Credit cards have, somewhat unfairly, developed a reputation as an easy way to pay for something when you may not have the money to do it upfront.

In reality, they’re so much more than that when you use them right. A cash back card, for example, may allow you to save a few cents per dollar on purchases you’d be making anyway. And if you consistently pay off your balance in full by the statement closing date, you’ll never have to pay a penny of interest.

Other advantages of using a credit card include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Unlike debit cards, credit cards let you build a credit history
  • Credit cards provide better security features in the case of fraud or a stolen card
  • Points and miles earned can often be redeemed for valuable flights, hotel stays, and other rewards
  • Some cards include unique, valuable benefits, from airline statement credits to meal delivery memberships and beyond

So, credit cards have a clear leg up over other payment options, like debit cards.

Here’s a realistic example.

Imagine that you’re about to purchase a brand-new TV online. You could pay for it via debit, or you could whip out a rewards credit card to earn some points or cash back, and then pay that balance right after to keep interest at bay.

A 2%–3% reward rate (for example) may not sound like much, but if you’re dropping, say, $ on the TV, 2% gets you $13 off the full price. Not bad.

Unfortunately, things quickly take a turn for the worse. You get your TV, set it up, and everything works perfectly…until you knock it over and shatter the display. You’re frustrated, because you didn’t purchase a protection plan, and user damage isn’t covered by the TV’s warranty.

There’s another option, however. You remember that you bought the TV with your credit card, and you check its Guide to Benefits — sure enough, it’s right there: Purchase Protection. You submit a claim through your credit card, and you’re reimbursed. Problem solved.

This might sound too good to be true, but purchase protection is just one example of the numerous benefits you may not even know your credit card provides.

Oftentimes, credit cards include benefits that are not only useful, but can provide hundreds of dollars (or more) in additional value.

Here, we’ll dig deeper into what types of benefits your credit card might deliver, and how those perks tend to work.

What Are Credit Card “Benefits”?

Credit cards typically come with benefits, which are extra features that may:

  • provide protections on purchases, like extended warranties on electronics
  • offer insurance or special access while traveling, like collision insurance on rental cars or airport lounge access
  • make your life easier, like concierge services to help you buy tickets or book reservations at restaurants

These benefits are often not advertised as much as features like cash back rewards, miles, introductory offers, and interest rates, but they can be very valuable even if they are largely ignored by many cardholders. In fact, many cards, particularly premium travel rewards credit cards, deliver benefits worth hundreds of dollars or more a year.

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover all offer a suite of benefits to accompany their cards, but they can vary depending on the card. Some card networks offer different benefits with different tiers. For example, some Visa cards come in both Visa and Visa Signature version, while Mastercard offers Platinum Mastercard, World Mastercard, World Elite Mastercard, etc. Higher levels provide more valuable benefits.

The issuer of the card may also provide some benefits. For example, a Visa card issued by Capital One may have some or all of the benefits Visa offers. It could also have some other benefits provided by Capital One.

It’s important to read the Guide to Benefits that comes with your credit card so you fully understand the range of benefits that come with your card so you can get the most out of it.

Below you’ll find an approximate listing of the benefits provided by Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Keep in mind that any particular card may not come with the full range of features; benefits often vary based on which type of card you’re using. It’s always good to call the number on the back of your card if you have any questions about your card’s benefits.

Examples of Credit Card Benefits

Here are some of the major types of benefits to look for on credit cards you already have or while you’re shopping for a new card.

Credit Card Shopping Benefits

Shopping benefits are meant to increase your confidence and sense of security while shopping, offering you the chance to get your money back if you find lower prices, if the item breaks, or if you need to return it. The details of any particular benefit will change depending on the card.

Price Protection

Price protection services are designed to help you save money. If you buy an item which is later advertised for a lesser price, you can be reimbursed for the difference in price. Different cards will have different limits on the amount of money that can be refunded for an individual purchase or a total amount that can be refunded in an year. These services are usually available for 60 to days after the initial purchase is made.

Purchase Protection

Purchase protection services provide insurance in case your eligible purchase is damaged or stolen. Items are usually covered for around 90 days. This service will have a dollar limit per item, from a few hundred to as much as one thousand dollars or more, as well as an annual dollar limit.

Return Protection

With cards that offer return protection, eligible purchases can be returned for a refund even if the retailer refuses to take them back. This benefit usually has a time limit of around 60 days from the date of purchase, and a dollar limit per item and per year.

Extended Warranty

Many cards offer an extended warranty for eligible purchases. When this service is activated, a manufacturer’s warranty can be extended, which usually takes the form of a doubling of the original warranty’s length. This is typically limited to 1 additional year.

Event Ticket Protection – American Express

This is a shopping benefit offered regularly by American Express. Cardholders who purchase a ticket that can no longer be used for an eligible reason can be refunded up to $1, twice per year.

Complimentary ShopRunner Membership – American Express

This benefit is offered to higher-end American Express cardholders. The ShopRunner service will provide free 2-day shipping and free return shipping on a wide variety of eligible items.

Cash at Checkout – Discover

All Discover cards come with this benefit, which functions much like the cash-back option for debit cards. When making a purchase at participating retailers, cash-back can be obtained immediately from the cashier. Any cash taken this way will count as a purchase.

Rental Car Insurance

Automatic accident coverage can be a great perk, saving cardholders the extra fee (around $30 a day) for the additional insurance offered by a rental car company. Of course it is important to read the fine print first since there are always restrictions and exclusions with insurance coverage.

For example, many card issuers do not offer rental car insurance coverage for certain vehicle types like campers, trucks, or SUVs. You’ll also probably need to decline the rental company’s own insurance for the credit card insurance to kick in.

Insider tip

It’s possible to rent a car with a debit card, but there are plenty of reasons why you should choose a credit card instead (and complimentary insurance coverage is one of them).

Mobile Phone Insurance

Some credit card issuers offer cell phone replacement insurance to their customers. When the perk is offered it typically covers the replacement cost of a new mobile phone in the event of damage or theft. In order to be eligible for the coverage most credit card issuers require that a cardholder pay his monthly mobile phone bill with his credit card.

Keep in mind that there is usually a cap on the coverage (generally around $) and most cardholders will still have to pay an out-of-pocket deductible fee of around $ Additionally, a mobile phone is not generally eligible for coverage if it’s lost.

How to Make a Claim to Get Credit Card Benefits

Insider tip

When making a claim, you should begin by giving the card company’s customer service line a call. The customer service representative will likely then direct you to a third-party insurance provider to process the claim.

Depending on the type of claim, you will generally have to begin by filling out a claim request and providing proof of eligibility (i.e. a broken mobile phone, a police report filed for a stolen phone, proof of purchase, receipts, etc.).

Additionally, keep in mind that you’ll have to be patient when filing a claim for coverage or reimbursement. The process of successfully filing a claim and being reimbursed can often take several months.

Visa Benefits

Personal Visa credit cards typically come in three different tiers — traditional Visa (or Visa Platinum), Visa Signature, and the premier Visa Infinite. Visa Signature cards include all traditional Visa benefits plus additional perks, and Visa Infinite includes Visa Signature’s offerings with Infinite-exclusive additions.

Higher Visa tiers may also provide increased coverage amounts for benefits introduced at lower tiers.

That’s generally good enough to qualify for a mortgage or other types of credit so why should you set your sights higher?

It’s simple. The better your score, the less you’ll pay in interest on what you borrow. Here’s an example of how much money a higher score can save you:

The is aimed at helping people who fall into the average credit category break into the excellent range so they can qualify for better rates.

Capital One Platinum MasterCard credit score tools

When you sign up for this card, you get free access to CreditWise, Capital One’s credit monitoring service. Members can see their TransUnion VantageScore at no charge each month.

This score is based on information in your TransUnion credit report, such as your payment history, how much debt you owe and how often you apply for new credit.

Besides CreditWise, you’re also part of the Credit Steps program. With this program, you’re eligible to have your Capital One Platinum MasterCard credit limit increased after making your first five payments on time.

That can help your score because it improves your credit utilization, which is how much debt you have versus your total credit line.

Here are some quick tips to help you get the most out of these Capital One Platinum MasterCard benefits:

Always pay your bill on time

Payment history makes up 35% of your FICO credit score. Late payments can hurt your score big time so make sure you pay by the due date each month.

Keep your balance to a minimum

30% of your FICO is based on credit utilization, which we explained earlier. If you want to see a positive change in your score, try to keep your balance as low as possible.

Doing these two simple things can add big points to your score

If you’re worried about paying late, sign up for personalized reminders so you always know when your next payment is coming up.

Capital One Platinum MasterCard Annual Fee

Capital One charges annual fees for some of its credit cards but no annual fee for the Capital One Platinum MasterCard.

There’s also no fee for balance transfers or foreign transactions when you use your card to make an international purchase.

You’ll pay a little extra for cash advances, however. The fee for that is $10 or 3% of the advance amount, whichever is greater. There’s also a late fee of up to $40 that kicks in if you miss a payment.

Enjoy hassle-free travel and shopping with Capital One Platinum MasterCard benefits.

Besides being a useful tool for building credit, the Capital One Platinum MasterCard comes with some nice added features.

For example, Capital One keeps an eye on your account 24/7 to look out for suspicious activity. They’ll give you a heads up if they spot anything that looks out of the ordinary.

You also have the flexibility of being able to pick your own due date and set up the Autopay feature for free.

This card has an EMV security chip for in-store shopping protection but you can easily link it to Apple Pay.

Capital One’s customer service is available 24/7 so you can always get help with your account when you need it. To make things easier, you can monitor your account online through the Capital One mobile app.

How being a Capital One Platinum MasterCard member really pays off

In addition to the benefits offered by Capital One, members get a laundry list of Capital One Platinum MasterCard perks, including:

  • Extended warranty protection
  • Price protection and reimbursement
  • Identity theft resolution services
  • hour roadside assistance
  • hour travel assistance
  • $, in travel accident insurance
  • Car rental damage insurance

While this card doesn’t pay out any travel miles, points or other rewards, it’s still a good pick if you spend a lot of time on the road.

No foreign transaction fee, for instance, means traveling overseas won’t cost you anything extra. The other travel features are also pretty generous.

For example, MasterTrip helps with figuring out visa or passport requirements and currency exchange rates if you’re headed to a foreign country.

If your luggage gets lost or stolen, MasterTrip will help you track it down. They don’t, however, reimburse you for any lost luggage costs.

This card covers you if you become ill or you’re hurt in an accident.

Aside from providing $, in travel accident insurance, MasterCard will help you find a physician, fill prescriptions and they’ll even arrange for a relative or friend to be brought to wherever you are if you’re hospitalized.

Those kinds of benefits can come in handy on trips that require you to travel more than 50 miles from home.

Watch out for the higher APR on purchases, transfers and advances

The can help you boost your credit score but there’s a potential downside to keep in mind where the APR is concerned.

The APR, or annual percentage rate, is a measure of how much a particular credit costs over the course of a year if you carry a balance.

A card with a higher APR means you’ll shell out more in interest charges if you don’t pay in full every month.

With this card, the regular APR for purchases, balance transfers and cash advances is steep.

There’s no 0% introductory promotion so you’re stuck paying that rate right off the bat. It’s also worth mentioning that the rate is variable, which means it can go up or down over time as the prime rate changes.

If you’re going to get this card, only charge what you can afford to pay in full each month. Otherwise, you’re going to end up paying a premium on everything you spend.

Final verdict: Is Capital One Platinum MasterCard good if you have average credit?

Average credit isn’t a dealbreaker when it comes to getting approved for loans or credit cards but it will only take you so far.

The is one MyBankTracker would recommend if you’re tired of being stuck in the average credit rut.

The two biggest downsides to this card are the higher APR and the lack of a rewards program.

If your goal is paying less in interest or earning money back on what you spend, you’re probably better off looking into a different option.

Ultimately, this card stands to benefit people who are committed to getting their credit score on the right track and are able to pay their balance in full and on time every month.

Capital One Platinum Credit Card Review &#; Build Your Credit

The Capital One Platinum Credit Card is a no-frills, no-annual-fee credit card designed for consumers who wish to build their credit. Although it&#;s not a secured credit card and thus doesn&#;t require an upfront deposit, it has a fairly high regular APR and comes with a low initial credit limit. However, when used responsibly, Capital One Platinum is a useful bridge to higher spending limits and more generous rewards credit cards.

Capital One Platinum is comparable to other unsecured credit cards for consumers with average credit, including Capital One&#;s own QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards. It also competes with a host of secured credit cards designed to build and improve credit, including the Capital One Secured MasterCard and the BankAmericard Secured Credit Card.

It&#;s important to note that this card is stripped-down and devoid of many of the perks that more generous credit cards offer as a matter of course, such as cash back or travel rewards and early spend bonuses. However, that doesn&#;t mean it&#;s not a potentially game-changing card for people who need to improve their credit standing.

Key Features

These are the key features of Capital One Platinum.

Credit Line Increase

If you use your card responsible, you&#;ll be automatically considered for a credit limit increase in as little as six months. Further credit line increases are possible with continued responsible use.

Important Fees

This card has no annual fee, balance transfer fee, or foreign transaction fee. The cash advance fee is the greater of $10 or 3%.

Capital One CreditWise

Thanks to Capital One&#;s CreditWise suite, you&#;re entitled to a free credit score with your paper or online statement each month. You can also access your score at any time in your online account dashboard. Additionally, CreditWise includes a host of credit-building tools and educational content.

Credit Required

The Platinum card is for consumers with fair credit and is actively marketed as a tool for building credit. Even if your credit history is checkered or spotty, you&#;re welcome to apply.

Here&#;s what Capital One Platinum has going for it.

  1. No Deposit Required. The Capital One Platinum Card doesn&#;t require an upfront deposit to secure your account. That&#;s a big advantage relative to secured competitors, some of which require $ (or greater) minimum deposits before you can use your card. Most also cap your spending at the deposited amount, forestalling the possibility of a credit line increase until you scrounge up more funds.
  2. No Annual Fee. This card has no annual fee. Many of its closest competitors, including the BankAmericard Secured Card and the Citi Secured Mastercard, do carry annual fees.
  3. No Balance Transfer Fee or Foreign Transaction Fee. Capital One Platinum doesn&#;t charge balance transfer fees or foreign transaction fees &#; rare perks in the credit-building category. That&#;s great news for cardholders who wish to transfer balances from other cards or use their Platinum cards outside the U.S.
  4. No Penalty APR. This card doesn&#;t carry a penalty APR, which is an excellent benefit if you occasionally miss a payment. The OpenSky Secured Visa and Citi Secured Mastercard both carry penalty APRs.
  5. Opportunity for Credit Line Increase in As Little As 6 Months. If you use this card responsibly, you could be eligible for a credit line increase in as little as 6 months. Many competing cards make you wait as long as 12 months to request an increase. If you&#;re planning to make a large, time-sensitive purchase, or simply want more month-to-month spending flexibility, a year is a long time to wait.
  6. Useful Credit-Monitoring and Credit-Building Tools. The free credit score other Capital One CreditWise tools are super-useful for cardholders committed to building &#; and understanding &#; their credit. Some competing cards, including the BankAmericard Secured Card, don&#;t come with free credit scores.

Consider these drawbacks before applying for the Capital One Platinum card.

  1. No Rewards. Capital One Platinum doesn&#;t have a cash back or travel rewards program. If you want a card designed for building credit and earning rewards, consider Capital One&#;s QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Card or the Navy Federal Credit Union nRewards Secured Card.
  2. High APR. Even by credit-building card standards, this card comes with a high regular APR. If you intend to carry a balance from month to month, consider lower-cost options such as Navy Federal Credit Union nRewards Secured or DCU Visa Platinum Secured, both of which have lower regular APRs.
  3. Pre-approval Credit Check Required. The Capital One Platinum application requires a credit check. While substantial credit blemishes aren&#;t likely to disqualify you, you probably won&#;t be approved for this card with a recent bankruptcy, foreclosure, or pattern of delinquency on your record. Some competing cards, such as Merrick Bank&#;s Secured Visa and OpenSky Secured Visa, don&#;t run your credit during the application process.

Final Word

Let&#;s address the elephant in the room: This credit card has a highly misleading name. Platinum is a precious metal that&#;s worth hundreds of dollars per ounce. Travel loyalty programs&#; platinum tiers are often at or near the top of their frequent traveler hierarchies, conferring luxurious benefits worthy of true VIPs. The best-known &#;platinum&#; credit card is the legendary American Express Platinum, one of the credit card world&#;s original status symbols.

Needless to say, the Capital One Platinum Credit Card is a not an exclusive card. However, when used responsibly, it&#;s absolutely worth its weight in gold &#; or platinum. If this Platinum card is what ultimately teaches you the value of making timely payments and spending within your means, you might just find a &#;real&#; Platinum Card in your wallet one day.
