How to read an ATT phone bill

Much like merchant services fees, invoices for telecommunications services can be difficult to understand. Here are some quick tips on how to read your ATT phone bill or conduct an ‘apples-to-apples’ cost comparison with other providers.

How Many Phone Lines Are On My ATT Bill?

Many businesses count the telephone lines listed under the ‘Additions and Changes to Service’ section of the telephone bill. This only provides you with an accurate count if all of your telephone lines experienced additions or changes to service during that billing month. In most instances, not all telephone lines incur additions or changes, which means that only some telephone lines appear in this section of the phone bill. It is not a reliable method to determine how many telephone lines your business is paying for.

Others inventory their telephone lines by counting the telephone lists that appear on the bill with local, local toll and or long distance usage (sometimes you can find the call details under these sections of the phone bill: ‘Local Usage’, ‘Local Toll’, and ‘Long Distance’). Unfortunately, this method won’t provide you with an accurate count either because only the telephone lines with usage appear in these sections.

So what is the most reliable and accurate way to determine how many phone lines you are paying for?

  1. On your ATT telephone bill, locate the ‘Surcharges and Other Fees’ section.
  2. Find the ‘Federal Subscriber Line Charge’ and write down the total dollar amount billed.
  3. Divide the total Federal Subscriber Line Charge by $ (this happens to be ATT’s Federal Subscriber Line Charge for each phone line).

Here’s an example:

$÷$=18

How Pay my att wireless bill Am I Paying for Phone Service?

Your telephone service may be comprised of several components, including but not limited to:

  1. Telephone Lines
  2. Features (e.g., Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Forwarding, Three Way Calling, etc.)
  3. Local Service
  4. Local Toll (Directory Assistance) Service
  5. Long Distance Service
  6. Internet Access
For Telephone Lines

To determine how much you pay for telephone lines on a monthly basis, use this calculation:

Monthly Services Charges + Additions and Changes to Service – Promotions & Discounts ÷ Number of Telephone Lines = Cost per Telephone Line

Here’s an example:

$+-$-$÷18=$
Monthly Service ChargesTotal Additions and Changes to ServiceTotal Promotions and DiscountsNumber of Telephone LinesCost per Telephone Line

For Features

Unfortunately, Advanced Features (things like Caller ID, Call Waiting, etc.) do not appear on every ATT phone bill as separate line items. You will find mills v board of education of the district of columbia itemized on the first telephone bill you receive after the Features are added (in the ‘Additions and Changes to Service’ section), but after that, they are lumped into the ‘Monthly Service Charges’ section. This is problematic for understanding the true cost per telephone line when the cost of features is thrown into the mix. It makes it that much more difficult to do an ‘apples-to-apples’ comparison with services offered by ATT competitors.

The eu elv directive 2000 53 ec way to determine what features are on each of your telephone lines is to call ATT and request your Customer Service Record (CSR). The CSR is the complete record of all your telephone lines, services and features in a particular account. Once you have received your CSR, you can then identify which features are on each phone line, then you can utilize ATT’s website (or another conversation with ATT customer service if you can bear waiting that long to speak with a human) to determine the monthly price you pay for each feature.

For Local Calling

To calculate how much you are paying per minute for local calling follow these steps:

  1. Locate the ‘Local Usage’ craigslist lexington sc homes for rent of the telephone bill
  2. Sum the total charges for each telephone line to determine the total Local Usage Cost
  3. Sum the number of local Initial Minutes and Additional Minutes for each telephone line
  4. Divide the total Local Usage Cost by the total number of Local Minutes

Here’s an example:

$÷12,=$
Total Local Usage CostTotal Number of Local MinutesCost per Minute for Local Usage

For this blog post, wehave not addressed bundled or unlimited local usage plans.

For Local Toll (Directory Assistance) Service

This is one area of an ATT bill that is easy to read and understand, yet it is often overlooked as an area where cost savings can easily be achieved. ATT Directory Assistance calls will often cost a dollar or more per call. There are a pay my att wireless bill of free Directory Assistance services out there (e.g., dial Free, or Google it). To see how much you’ll save each month simply by changing to one of these free methods, add up the number of Directory Assistance calls made by each telephone line. You may be surprised.

For Long Distance Calling

To calculate how much you are paying per minute for long distance calling follow these steps:

  1. Locate the ‘Long Distance’ section of the telephone bill
  2. Determine whether there is a Long Distance Service Charge or Monthly Commitment amount billed
  3. Add up the total charges for each telephone line to determine the total Long Distance Usage Cost
  4. Sum the number of Long Distance Minutes for each telephone line
  5. Divide the total Long Distance Usage Cost by the total number of Long Distance Minutes

Here’s an example:

$+$÷3,=$

For this blog post, we have not addressed bundled or unlimited long distance plans.

For Internet Access

7 Ways to Lower Your Cell Phone Bill

Have you ever opened your cell phone bill and thought, “Wow, that was cheap”? Yeah, didn’t think so.

But take heart: It’s possible to save money on your cell phone bill without making drastic changes. Simple tweaks can lower  your bill — leading to big savings over time.

1. Opt for autopay

Most wireless carriers will knock $5 to $10 off your bill if you sign up for automatic payments. T-Mobile applies its $5 discount per line, so a family of four could save $20 on their monthly bill by opting for autopay. With some carriers, including Verizon, you can’t use a credit card for automatic payments but must link a checking account or debit card instead.

2. Switch to prepaid

You can slash your monthly cell phone costs by switching to a prepaid carrier. Consider these examples:

  • A 5GB plan with Cricket Wireless costs $40 per month before autopay discounts. The least expensive postpay plan available from AT&T, which owns Cricket, is 3GB for $60 per month before autopay discounts.

  • Four lines of unlimited data cost $ per month with Boost Mobile, but $ per month (before discounts) with its parent company, Sprint.

  • Verizon customers can get 6GB of prepaid data for $40 per month or 2GB of postpaid data for $55 per month.

3. Change or remove your cell phone insurance

Most pay my att wireless bill phone carriers offer a variety of protection plans. Your options can include extended warranties, insurance and full-blown 24/7 tech support for any Bluetooth-enabled device in your home.

In most cases, standard insurance provides more than enough coverage. It protects you if your phone is lost, stolen or damaged. It’s also the least expensive option available through your wireless carrier.

Switching from a premium protection plan to basic insurance coverage will save you a few dollars each month. Remove insurance entirely and you’ll save $80 to $ per year, depending on your carrier and current protection plan.

Dropping insurance could be risky if you have a brand-new phone, but it can make sense for older devices. That’s because insurance providers for major cell phone carriers typically charge deductibles ranging from $ to $

If forgoing a policy makes you feel vulnerable, consider an alternative, such as AppleCare+ or SquareTrade.

4. Skip the phone upgrade

Your smartphone is built to last more than two years, but most people still trade up after 24 months. Doing so locks you into another 18 to 24 months of payments for that new phone — adding $20 to $40 per month, per line to your bill. Pay my att wireless bill your smartphone for even a year after it's paid off can save you hundreds of dollars. So, wait until your phone truly needs to be replaced before upgrading. Then, consider a used cell phone to save even more money.

5. Cash in on discounts

Students, government employees, current and former service members, and employees of some companies may qualify for a discount on their cell phone service. The easiest way to find out: Call your carrier or stop into a store. You often need to verify your status — with an email address or pay stub, for example — to keep your discount active.

6. Add lines

This seems counterintuitive, because adding one or more lines will increase your bill. But splitting santander online banking login problems cost with other people can lower the amount you each pay. Here's how that works out:

  • One line on AT&T's Unlimited Starter plan is $65 per month (after autopay discounts, before taxes and fees). But if you have four lines on that same plan, the cost per line is $

  • One line on Verizon's 8GB plan is $90, but if you have four lines sharing the plan, the price drops to $ per line before taxes, fees and device charges.

7. Update your service address

The taxes and fees added to your bill each month are based on where you live. If you’ve moved to a new state, or someone on your family plan has, you could save big just by updating your service address.

A person who moves from Washington state to Oregon would save an average of $ per year in wireless taxes and fees, according to a June NerdWallet study. Migrating from Illinois to Wisconsin? You'd pocket $ in savings on average. Those figures are based on an individual cell phone bill; the savings would be greater on a family plan.

Updating your service address is easy. In most cases, you simply log in to your account and change it under your user profile, just as you would for your billing address.
