For an excellent prepaid phone carrier for families, consider the best Boost Mobile plans

You'll find the best Boost Mobile plans among the main options available for smartphone owners in the U.S. But is Boost the right option for you?

It could will be. Boost plans are affordable, flexible and family friendly. If you're all right with prepaid carrier service, Boost certainly merits some consideration, especially if you want to save money on your monthly phone bill.

Boost is a mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO, that offers its service through T-Mobile's network. Boost used to be owned by Sprint, but was sold to Dish as a condition of the T-Mobile-Sprint merger, with the idea that Dish will eventually build a wireless network of its own.

While it isn't going to be the biggest name in your search for the best cell phone plans, Boost will stand out for its varied collection of prepaid cell phone plans and for anyone looking for the best family cell phone plans since Boost offers discounts for additional lines.

Boost sits somewhere in the middle of available phone plans — not as expensive as the likes of Verizon or AT&T, but more than what Mint Mobile, T-Mobile or Tello charge for some of their plans. We've picked out the best Boost Mobile cell phone plans, and can answer key questions you might have about the service.

Best Boost Mobile unlimited data plans

Boost Mobile offers two versions of the same unlimited plan, with the main difference being a higher cost and increased mobile hotspot cap on one of them. Boost also just added a perk to its $60/month Unlimited Plus plan that includes free health care advice through K Health. (Other Boost customers can get that feature for $ a month on top of their other plans.)

While you can get Boost's unlimited plans for just one phone line, the best value will be seen when you sign up for a family plan. The first line of unlimited data will cost you $50 a month but after that, each new line will cost just $30 a month (or $40 per extra line on Unlimited Plus). Under this pricing, a family of four pays $ each month for unlimited data.

Boost also offers a $10 a month discount for six months if you bring your own phone to the plan.

Boost Mix & Match plans

Not everyone needs unlimited data, which is where Boost's Mix and Match plans come in. Boosts offers five such options in total, and as the name implies, you can have a family plan mixing the different plans.

You can also get these prepaid plans on your own but they can be quite expensive this way. Using the mix-and-match offer, you can get five lines of data for less than $50, which is a great price.

Is Boost a good carrier?

Boost Mobile makes it into our list of the best phone carriers. Of course, it isn't going to compare to the likes of Verizon or AT&T when it comes to coverage, speeds, or included perks. But for the price, Boost does have something to offer budget-minded customers.

On all of the best Boost Mobile plans, there are no service contracts, and Boost includes taxes and fees. You also get unlimited calls and texts even on tiered data plans. Boost also offers a reward program known as Boost Perks, giving you competitions to enter, discounts at shops and restaurants and exclusive perks.

As for coverage, Boost uses the T-Mobile network. That means leading 5G coverage (at least in select cities) great speeds and 4G coverage spanning the entirety of the US.

However, as an MVNO using T-Mobile, Boost can be subject to slowed speeds if the network becomes congested, though that's common practice for MVNOs. 5G isn't fully available for all Boost customers at this time — another thing to consider if you're looking at Boost as an option.

Boost Mobile: View an ad, lower your cellphone bill

NEW YORK—Are you willing to view ads on your smartphone to lower your monthly bill?

A new Boost Mobile app unveiled Tuesday presents the option.

The Android-only app is called Boost Dealz and it was developed in a partnership with an Australian startup called Unlockd. Boost's parent is Sprint.

Once a Boost customer fetches the app from the Google Play Store and signs up, he or she will be served full-screen ads and receive special offers that appear every three times or so after they unlock their phone screen. The payback for customers who agree to receive such ads and offers is a $5 bill credit each month.

The Boost brand tends to attract budget-minded customers. Boost's are prepay cellular plans that don't require a contract.

Starbucks, Levi’s and Lyft are among the participating advertisers, and Unlockd has also teamed up with Yahoo and with Twitter-owned ad server MoPub.

The Boost Dealz ads will be personalized based on your interests and your location, so if you’re near a Starbucks say or it is early in the morning you may get an offer for discounted coffee. You can instantly dismiss an ad by clicking on an X, or opt out of the Boost Dealz plan altogether. There is no requirement to click on any of the ads. Customers who do click in can accept a discounted offer or get more information on a product.

You can check out a promotional Unlockd video here.

Unlockd actually launched in Australia in beta last October, where CEO Matt Berriman says the click-through rate on ads is more than 4%, a very high number.

The pitch for advertisers is they’ll reach customers before the user has to launch an app such as Facebook. Unlockd has received $15 million in funding from various investors, including News Corp's co-chairman Lachlan Murdoch.

No word on when or if a similar Unlockd app will make it beyond Boost to other brands, or for that matter on an iPhone. The company would need Apple's blessing, which Berriman says is “always a challenge.”

Offering ads for discounts isn’t unprecedented in the tech world, of course. One notable example comes from Amazon, which has been selling Kindle eBook readers for several years now that carry a lower price for buyers who agree to view the sponsored screen-savers that Amazon calls "Special Offers.".

For his part, Berriman envisions a time when viewing ads might partially or fully pay for your cellphone hardware.

In recent years, we have been the spectators of technological progress in the fields of telephone, mobile and fixed lines. We are talking about this because, perhaps, before you had to go to a telephone center to cancel the telephone plans and the services that some operators offered us.

However, all of this has changed dramatically around the world, because with the internet speed improvement , all can absolutely be done via its interface quickly . For this reason, every day there are more and more wireless phone industries and they are always active to improve their service and different plans.

One of these most famous companies and brands in the world is Boost Mobile, a company that offers phone services and has also launched phones like the Motorola i1. We therefore want to explain to you from this mark how you can create a Boost Mobile account and at the same time cancel your account online.

How to create a Boost Mobile account?

This is a unique service that allows you to know all the details of your account; And its creation is even simpler than the creating an email account in Gmail . Therefore, the first thing you are going to do is enter the account official Boost Mobile at from the search engine .

Then at the top right, where it says "My Boost" and in the new little window that appears, select the first option Dashboard and it will take you to another window. In the new window, you will have 2 empty spaces where you will need to enter your Boost Mobile cell phone number  and your account PIN code to start the session.

Once logged in, you will then find various options to perform, such as checking the available balance, your payment date or add money to your account . On the other hand, you can also use a credit card  to make your payments or change your plans or reset your voicemail password or PIN.

How can you pay your bill online?

To make your payments online, you have several options through the Boost Mobile Online page, although entering through a mobile phone you will not see as many options as on the computer. The first payment option is to use Auto Re-Boost - Free , by entering "My account" to configure, by selecting the option "Payments".

Then select the option "Subscribe to Auto Re-Boost" in the menu that appears on the right; and thus, enter the data they request from your credit or debit card. Another option is to make a one-time payment from “My Account” using the “Re-Boost Now” option and use a credit card or Re-Boost card.

As a last option for making online payments, you can use "Make a present" to transfer money to another person, adding their phone number and credit / debit card. With this option, you can spend up to $ 99 for the other person; and at the same time these 3 options are free in Boost Mobile.

What other options are available to you to cancel your account?

You can take into account that these payments can also be made in person at the service center in cash or by card, or also by phone. If you want to do it over the phone, we'll explain how; In the first option, it is dial #ADD or # , it's a free call where you just follow the instructions.

A second option to cancel by phone is via the Boost Zone app , which is also a free application that you can download to your mobile phone. To do this, enter the Boost Zone application and select the function "Pay next month" ; To add balance, use your credit card or also a Re-Boost card.

In addition, another option available is to call Boost or the phone system and thereby add a balance to a Boost Mobile account whether or not it is a guest. To do this, you do not need the PIN code of the owner of this account; You must add the phone number in the account you are going to modify and follow the steps.

In accordance with Boost Mobile's security recommendations, you should protect your data on your phone by having a lock or secure password so that no one can access this information.

Boost Mobile will reward you with more data for paying your bill on time

If you happen to pay your phone bill on time every month, Boost Mobile today announced a new plan that will mostly likely be of interest to you. The Sprint MVNO’s new ‘growing data’ plan will let you earn up to 3GB of extra high-speed data by making on-time payments.

Here’s how it works – for every three months that you make an on-time payment, an extra MB of high-speed data will be added to your monthly data pool at no extra charge. This means you’ll be able to earn up to 3GB of additional data for no extra cost over a span of 18 months. If you happen to reach 18 on-time payments, Boost Mobile will offer you a new plan that’s actually a pretty decent value.

After 18 months, customers can switch to a new $35 per month plan with 5GB of data or a $45 per month plan with 8GB. These prices would normally only get you 2GB and 5GB of data per month respectively, so this is actually a really nice deal.

How you could save hundreds of dollars on your cell phone bill

The cost of a cell phone plan is dropping, but you may still be paying more than you need to, especially if you're with the big four: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Smaller and prepaid carriers such as Cricket, Boost and Metro PCS have upped their game in recent years and several of them have become good options. Especially for the price.

"Switching to a prepaid carrier can cut your monthly phone bill in half without sacrificing coverage," Christine Gallup, cell phone expert and founder of mynewextsetup.us, tells CNBC Make It. (On a prepaid plan, you pay at the beginning of the month, prior to receiving your service, whereas with a traditional or "postpaid" plan you pay at the end of the month.)

If you want to save some money on your phone bill, here are a few valley national bank savings rates to get started.

Explore your options

If you're not bound by any payment plans, then you should look beyond the Big Four to save the most. Take AT&T, for example. Currently, the carrier is offering unlimited plans starting at $70 per month for a single line, as long as you sign up for autopay and paperless billing.

Cricket — which runs on AT&T's network — offers unlimited plans starting at $50 after the autopay discount. And, like many smaller carriers, Cricket's price includes taxes and fees, so there are no add-on costs when you get the monthly bill. By switching, you could save over $ a year compared to the AT&T unlimited plan. And you typically can keep your old number too.

Only pay for the data you need

You might not actually need unlimited high speed data. Many people are pushed into the unlimited plans by the Big Four but, in fact, the average person uses about GB per month (though millennials use about GB), according to market research firm NPD Group.

"Check your own cell phone bill over the course of several months, find out your average data usage and, if you are using 5GB or less, stick with a fixed data amount plan that will most likely cost you less per month," Gallup says.

With a carrier like h2o — which runs off AT&T's network — you'd only pay $40 a month for a plan with 8GB of high-speed data. That option could net you roughly $ in savings every year.

Or you could go with the new Unreal Mobile, a spinoff of FreedomPop. They run off the Sprint network, and an AT&T network option is in the works for later this summer, according to a spokeswoman. An unlimited plan with Unreal starts at just $10 a month, although high speed data is capped at 1 GB, and after that speeds are much slower. At that price, you could be saving over $ annually once you factor in taxes and fees.

Go prepaid

If you're really hesitant to switch to a budget carrier, consider at least changing your plan to a prepaid one at your current provider that doesn't charge all of the taxes and fees. The Tax Foundation found that, intaxes, fees and surcharges made up a whopping percent of the average customer's wireless bill.

If you move to a prepaid plan, you typically avoid paying many of these fees. AT&T has a prepaid unlimited plan starting at $55 per month for one line and Sprint has a $60 prepaid unlimited plan. Meanwhile T-Mobile and Verizon offer prepaid unlimited plans for $75 a month — which means you could save up to approximately $14 a month compared to their similarly priced postpaid unlimited plans.

At the very least, there will be no surprise costs. "Since you pay for how to pay my boost mobile bill service upfront, you don’t have to worry about how to pay my boost mobile bill or other extra charges sneaking on to your monthly bill," Gallup says.

Things to consider

Competitors like Cricket, Boost Mobile and MetroPCS rent bandwidth on the networks owned the Big Four, so they say they can provide comparable call quality and speeds at lower prices. The networks are not exactly the same, though. At many of these smaller carriers, there are fine print restrictions noting that your data speeds may be slowed during times of high usage. And some smaller carriers only provide local accessibility.

If data speeds and call quality are the most important factors to you, it may be worth it to pay more to stay at one of the Big Four. To see the differences between the carriers, RootMetrics and OpenSignal have maps where you can compare providers' network quality.

And even if you are open to switching, make sure to check your current plan. You may not be on a contract for your cell phone service but, if you bought the latest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy phone through your carrier, you could still be on the hook for the remaining balance. In that case, it might make sense to wait until the phone is paid off before making a move.

"Keep an eye out, though: Sometimes your new carrier will pay your early termination fee when you switch," Gallup says.

That said, Gallup adds, "it's always important to read the fine print. Some great prepaid options offer a super cheap deal, yet have some features removed (i.e., mobile hot spots) or offer slower data speeds to make them cheaper."

Don't miss: I joined a family plan with a friend I hardly ever see, and it saves me $ a year
