College GameDay panel split on Gophers/Michigan winner

The College GameDay panel was split, with Desmond Howard and Lee Corso taking Michigan to beat Minnesota, while David Pollack and Vince Vaughn picked the Gophers.

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota football team opens its season under the lights against Michigan Saturday night at TCF Bank Stadium, and ESPN&#x;s College GameDay is in Minneapolis for the Gophers&#x; second straight home game.

The No. ranked Gophers and No. ranked Wolverines kickoff at p.m., and it&#x;ll be the first tcf bank stadium ann arbor a ranked Minnesota program has hosted a ranked opponent since

The College GameDay crew of Desmond Howard, Rece Davis, David Pollack, Kirk Herbstreit and Maria Taylor hosted the ESPN weekly college football show inside TCF Bank Stadium Saturday morning. Herbstreit and Taylor will join Chris Fowler on the call for the game.

As is customary at the end of each show, the GameDay crew made their picks for who will win Saturday&#x;s games. Howard, who won the Heisman Trophy at Michigan, picked the Wolverines. Pollack and celebrity guest picker Vince Vaugh, who lived briefly in Minneapolis, each tcf bank stadium ann arbor the Gophers to beat Michigan. Corso, joining the show virtually from his Orlando home, sported a large Michigan helmet to pick the Wolverines.

Last year, Corso put on the Goldy Gopher head gear to pick Minnesota to beat Wisconsin, a game the Badgers won

The Gophers haven&#x;t beaten the Wolverines at home since Minnesota last beat Michigan in in Ann Arbor.

Wisconsin native keeps cool at TCF Bank

MINNEAPOLIS - The NHL’s ice man cometh to TCF Bank Stadium on Tuesday as the league started its countdown to the Feb. 21 outdoor game featuring the Minnesota Wild and Chicago Blackhawks.

This essentially is a home game for Wisconsinite Dan Craig, who lives outside Hudson and has supervised construction of all 15 NHL outdoor games since

His crew started laying decking tiles over the turf Tuesday in single-digit temperatures and a subzero wind chill. Ice paneling, boards and the cooling system are scheduled to be installed Thursday. The first spray of water comes Friday.

“We’ve done 15 of them and none are set up the same; that’s the fun part of it,” Craig said. “There is no book. You hit the ground running and you adapt as you go.”

Long-range forecasts for next weekend call for temperatures around freezing for the Feb. 20 Alumni Game featuring former Blackhawks against ex-North Stars and Wild players, as well as the Stadium Series game the following afternoon.

Ideal conditions, Craig said, are overcast skies with the temperature between 26 and 32 degrees. Coolants regulate the ice; however, severe cold and wind can cause chipping.

“We had below zero in Calgary and 57 and raining in Pittsburgh,” he said. “Hopefully, you can rise to the occasion. That’s what they pay you for.”

Craig gazed out at midfield at TCF Bank Stadium, where the 1 p.m. shadows horizontally cut the field in half - a pattern that similarly would expose the rink.

“We could have zero degrees, but if we have hard sunshine along the boards, that can be an issue,” he said.

The Tcf bank stadium ann arbor in held its first outdoor game in subzero conditions at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium. The New Year’s Day Winter Classic started in Buffalo and has been held in iconic stadiums such as Boston’s Fenway Park, Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Michigan Stadium - a.k.a. “The Big House” - in Ann Arbor.

The Stadium Series started in and features two more outdoor games. The first included Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, where it was sunny and 63 degrees at faceoff.

The NHL uses a foot mobile refrigeration trailer and employs workers to build and maintain the rink. More than 3, gallons of glycol coolant are used to freeze 20, gallons of water for the 2-inch thick ice surface.

Wild ice operations manager Travis Larson has been part of Craig’s crew for seven previous outdoor games. Three more Xcel Energy Center technicians were drafted for the TCF Bank Stadium workforce.

“There is a lot of pressure, but you have to have a lot of fun with the guys,” Craig said. “We create a team just like a hockey team. There’s a lot of pride on the line.”

A road through college football royalty

Editor’s note: Minnesota Daily sports reporter Jack Satzinger and photographer Chelsea Gortmaker traveled from TCF Bank Stadium to Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., stopping at three historic college football stadiums along the way.

As the car turned onto Interstate 94 East, TCF Bank Stadium loomed large in the rearview mirror.

The Gophers football team’s home stadium holds some of the best chase united credit card customer service phone money can buy.

It has the largest locker room in all of football at 60 yards long and 25 yards wide. It’s even shaped like a football.

Its scoreboard is bigger than a regulation NBA court at 48 feet high and feet wide and was the first in the Big Ten to broadcast in high-definition.

And behind that scoreboard are stunning views of the Minneapolis skyline and the Mississippi River.

Still, even with these amenities, Minnesota’s 4-year-old stadium doesn’t possess the tradition of other Midwest college football powerhouses.

On the road from TCF Stadium to Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., those differences in culture are evident in the homes of three of the country’s most storied football programs.

Camp Randall Stadium

Camp Randall, located in Madison, Wis., was built in and is the fourth-oldest venue in the nation.

The land Camp Randall sits on was first used to train Wisconsin troops during the Civil War. Now, it’s the battleground for Badgers football.

Camp Randall may be old, but Wisconsin’s football dominance is somewhat new.

The Badgers’ record was a combined in the four seasons before Barry Alvarez was hired as head coach in Camp Randall, which holds 80, people, averaged just 41, fans per game in that span.

Now the stadium routinely sells out and is known for its festive atmosphere, especially the “Jump Around” tradition at the start of the fourth quarter, when fans jump up and down to music.

Wisconsin’s crowd is raucous for a reason. The Badgers have made three straight Rose Bowl appearances. Minnesota hasn’t represented the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl since

Wisconsin’s turnaround is largely credited to Alvarez, who is now the university’s athletics director. A statue of him stands in front of the stadium.

SinceMinnesota and Wisconsin have faced off for the right to take home Paul Bunyan’s Axe — a series the Badgers lead

In recent years, the “rivalry” has been even more lopsided. Wisconsin has beaten the Gophers nine straight times, but the feel of a Gophers/Badgers rivalry is still potent at Camp Randall.

As some Minnesota fans exited the stadium in Gophers attire, a Badgers security guard said smugly, tcf bank stadium ann arbor hope we keep that axe from you for a few more years.”

Notre Dame Stadium

Notre Dame Stadium, built in and located in South Bend, Ind., is the epitome of classic college football tradition.

This legendary stadium still does not have a video board, which allows fans to focus on the game without distractions.

And that’s only the beginning of the story for a facility laced with tradition.

As the Fighting Irish players make their way out to the field before games, they touch a sign that reads, “Play Like A Champion Today.” That tradition has been in place for decades.

Instead of outfitting its field in new-age artificial turf like other programs, including the Gophers, Notre Dame plays on all-natural grass.

The stylistic choice maintains the Fighting Irish’s commitment to tradition but comes at a cost.

Walking through the tunnel onto the field, grounds crew workers toiled away in the mud on a Friday night, replacing old grass with new.

Lining the tunnel onto the field are banners of Notre Dame’s 11 national championships. The Irish made it to the BCS National Championship last season but lost to Alabama.

Notre Dame’s most recent championship win came inwhen the team was led by legendary coach Lou Holtz.

Holtz also coached at Minnesota, and the program seemed to be turning around until Notre Dame plucked him away in

Michigan Stadium

Michigan Stadium is nicknamed “The Big House” for good reason. For its win Saturday against the Gophers, it boasted an announced crowd of ,

The stadium has held ,plus fans for consecutive games. TCF Bank Stadium holds only 50, and most of the time it isn’t full.

But the Wolverines’ football tradition is bigger than its stadium.

A few blocks away from The Big House is a bar that honors the oldest trophy game in college football: Michigan and Minnesota’s fight for the Little Brown Jug. The Brown Jug Restaurant is a pregame favorite for Wolverines fans, but there were also plenty of Gophers fans there Saturday.

The same could tcf bank stadium ann arbor be said once the game began, when a sea of yellow inundated the stadium while a small Minnesota contingent sat near the remodeled press box.

“When we were warming up out there, I was like, ‘How do they fitpeople in this place?’” redshirt freshman quarterback Mitch Leidner said. “Then we go back out there again … and they’re just stacked all together. It’s a cool atmosphere.”

Built inthe Big House is one of the oldest stadiums in how old is jose aldo Big Ten, but its press box experience is anything but archaic.

Inthe athletics department spent $ million to add the new press box and 81 suites. Adding two towers on the east and west ends of the field increased noise in the stadium by 30 percent.

TCF Bank Stadium could also be expanded down the road, with an estimated capacity of 80, fans. But if that happens, it won’t be for years and will require a rabid fan base that comes with a winning pedigree.

Wild owner Craig Leipold chauffeured NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman around the Twin Cities Monday, making stops to tour TCF Bank Stadium and Target Field as Leipold continues his long-lasting pitch to land the Wild an outdoor game.

Leipold&#;s focus had been on hosting the Winter Classic. But after being routinely passed over for the NHL&#;s marquee outdoor game, he has said he&#;s more willing to consider one in the so-called Stadium Series.

That&#;s the right move, Bettman said.

&#;It&#;s easier (for the Wild) to focus on that because we have more opportunity to satisfy the demand,&#; Bettman said. &#;(An outdoor game) is something that we know the club wants, that Craig wants, that the fans want, and we&#;ll be receptive. I can&#;t give you a date yet, or a venue, but it&#;s something we&#;re focused on.&#;

After touring the Twins&#; baseball stadium and Gophers football stadium, Leipold and the commissioner watched Monday&#;s game against Calgary from Leipold&#;s box seats at Xcel Energy Center.

For years, Leipold has been pushing for an outdoor NHL game in Minnesota. Even when Leipold and Bettman discuss unrelated topics, Leipold makes sure to bring it up.

&#;If that were any exaggeration, it wouldn&#;t be by much,&#; Bettman said. &#;We talk on a regular basis, and somehow it manages to come up in almost every conversation.&#;

The NHL had six outdoor games this season: one in Los Angeles, one in Ann Arbor, Mich., one in Chicago, one in Vancouver, and two in New York.

On Jan. 18, Minnesota drew more than 45, to TCF Bank Stadium for an outdoor college game against Ohio State, and Bettman acknowledged Minnesota would be a natural fit.

&#;Absolutely,&#; he said. &#;The fans, the hockey environment, the weather &#; this is the State of Hockey after all.&#;

His staff would play a bigger role than he in determining a venue for an outdoor game the Wild hosted, but Bettman said he was impressed with both Target Field and the Bank.

&#;Both venues were very, very attractive,&#; he said. &#;I think in terms of Minnesota&#;s infrastructure, they can be proud of both venues. Whether or not one is more suitable, or one makes more sense and tcf bank stadium ann arbor like, I need some more input.&#;

It was announced earlier this NHL season that the Winter Classic would be held in Washington, D.C. But the location of other Stadium Series events haven&#;t been announced yet.

&#;Despite all of the discussions and the speculation over what the right number is, you can&#;t really over do these,&#; Bettman said of outdoor games. &#;We hadpeople attend the six stadium games. &#; It has become such a big fan favorite event, such an in-market phenomena. But we don&#;t want to do too many because it is a national TV attraction, and logistically, I think, we tcf bank stadium ann arbor our organization to the limits (with six).&#;

So could Minnesota host one in ?

&#;I&#;m not making any promises, I&#;m not making any announcements,&#; Bettman said. &#;But we&#;re focused on the interest.&#;

Angelique S. Chengelis of The Detroit News breaks down the Wolverines’ Week 1 matchup with Minnesota:

Key matchup

Minnesota returns the Big Ten receiver of the year, Rashod Bateman, who had opted out then returned to the Gophers when the season was reinstated. Pressure from Michigan’s front seven will be critical to give the new starters at cornerback, Vincent Gray and, from all indications, Gemon Green, time to do their jobs effectively as they get their feet wet. Gray is 6-foot-2, and Green is, so there won’t be an enormous mismatch with Batemen (, ), but can they keep up with one of the best receivers in Gophers’ history?
