Minimum age: 21 years

Class 5 Drivers license and Clean Drivers Abstract (Must provide drivers abstract and receive approval from our insurance provider prior to driving Food Bank vehicles)

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy working with the public

Capable of working in a team environment

Good time management skills

Reliable, trustworthy, patient, punctual, and empathetic

Comfortable working in a warehouse setting

Able to lift a minimum of 15 kg (33 lbs)

Able to operate a manual pallet jack (On site training provided)

Good physical health as lifting, bending, loading, and unloading will be involved




Organizations can partner with Food Bank to build a unique team volunteer experience. Food Bank has designed and delivered custom opportunities to groups in corporate offices, schools, community organizations, and many other locations. Through the pandemic, Food Bank has also developed engaging virtual events for groups to serve together from home. Programs are fully customizable to any group’s needs: large or small groups, family-friendly events, or corporate team-building retreats.

Gather a team of people to share in the Virtual Face Hunger™ Simulation – a highly interactive experience which raises awareness and understanding of hunger and its many causes.

In this workshop, participants receive a profile packet with information about the identity, income, and available resources of a person at risk of hunger. Each participant embodies a person experiencing hunger through a series of exercises, facing the challenge to provide nutritious meals for their family. Face Hunger™ participants also debrief with a group discussion on their experience to walk away with a new understanding of hunger in New York City.

Each simulation for up to 25 participants asks for a sponsorship fee of $2,


The Food Bank of Waterloo Region continues to be an essential service and volunteers play an important role in helping to ensure everyone has access to food when and where how to volunteer at a food bank need it.

While some of our volunteer roles are currently on hold, we are actively recruiting for the following roles:

  • Warehouse Support – Assist with building hampers and sorting perishable and non-perishable donations
  • Drivers – Pick up community donations or complete deliveries to our network partners during daytime hours
  • Driver Assistants – Assist drivers to pickup community donations or complete deliveries to our network partners during daytime hours

Volunteer Eligibility Criteria:
  • 15 years of age or older.
  • Able to lift be physically active how to volunteer at a food bank lift up to 50 how to volunteer at a food bank consistently, including repeated bending, twisting, reaching, lifting above the shoulder, and working with various sizes of boxes/containers in sometimes awkward positioning.
  • Able to wear a mask and face shield for the duration of your shift.
  • Flexible to help with a variety of tasks which may be different each shift, in a fast-paced warehouse environment with forklift traffic.
  • Willing to be trained on operating a pump truck.
  • Available weekday mornings or afternoons, between Monday – Friday, with limited evening and weekend opportunities.

9/30/ Update to Mask Policy - Safety is our utmost priority and as a result of increased COVID transmission in both Summit and Stark Counties, the Foodbank is reinstating a full mask mandate for all staff, volunteers and visitors. Volunteers must wear a mask or facial covering over their nose and mouth, regardless of vaccination status. Volunteers must also wash their hands before beginning a shift and we ask that any volunteer or guest stay home if experiencing any symptoms or have been exposed to COVID

Volunteer opportunities are available:

  • Monday-Friday for individuals from ampm with a break for cleaning from pmpm.
  • Monday-Friday for groups from amam and pmpm.
  • *First and third Wednesday evenings from pmpm.
  • *Saturdays from amam.
  • *We’re actively recruiting volunteers for the Neighborhood Distribution, held the second and fourth Thursday from pmpm in July and August.

*These volunteer opportunities are currently available at the Main Campus in Akron only. 

To promote a safe experience, space is limited for all volunteer opportunities. To ensure a space is open, it is important for all volunteers to sign up for a time slot how to volunteer at a food bank to arrival.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our normal volunteer hours are Monday-Friday, ampm. A typical volunteer shift lasts two hours.

Please note, you must be at least 10 years old to volunteer. Youth volunteers age 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Warehouse Opportunities

Volunteers have a hands-on experience sorting, inspecting, relabeling or repackaging donated food.

Office Opportunities

Volunteers assist with filing, computer data entry, mailings and other essential administrative duties.

Nights & Weekends

Warehouse volunteer opportunities are available on Saturday mornings, amam (except holiday weekends) and on the first and third Wednesday evenings of each month, pmpm.

Neighborhood Distributions

Volunteers have a hands-on experience loading and unloading groceries and assisting clients at monthly onsite food distributions.

Special Events

Volunteers assist with events, activities, campaigns and food drives throughout the year.

Regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID)

The health and safety of everyone who attends our volunteer events is our top priority. Please know that we continue to monitor the novel coronavirus (COVID) outbreak, and we are taking necessary precautions.

  • Due to the Coronavirus/COVID situation, we are only accepting volunteers aged 18 and older at this time.
  • If you fall under the CDC&#;s high-risk category due to your age or because of underlying medical conditions, we strongly recommend that you stay at home and not volunteer at this time.

In addition to standard health and sanitation procedures, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, has also committed to: 

  • Implementing social distancing measures. Food Bank staff will ensure appropriate distance is maintained between each volunteer during check-in, orientation, and during the volunteer event.   
  • Providing hand sanitizer pumps. 
  • Sanitation staff will sanitize the facility regularly both inside and out, meeting room, door frames, how to volunteer at a food bank, break room, door handles, and other often touched surfaces. 
  • Providing gloves and masks to all volunteers. (Attached you will find a &#;how to safely remove gloves&#; guide)

We will also display best practices throughout the event, encouraging everyone to wash their hands for at least twenty seconds and stay 6 feet apart. Attached you will also find the ‘What You Need to Know’ about the COVID from the County of Los Angles Public Health.

Public Health Tips To Protect Yourself


  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Limit close contact, like kissing and sharing cups or utensils, with people who are sick.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you do not have a tissue, use your sleeve (not your hands).
  • Facemasks are most effective when used appropriately by health care workers and those directly caring for people who are sick and by people who are sick (source control).
  • Get a flu immunization if you have not done so this season.

  • Minimum age requirement is 18 (sorry, no exceptions)
  • All volunteers are asked to complete a liability release prior to participating in programs at the Food Bank.
  • No walk-ins allowed. All volunteers must register online.
  • Please dress in comfortable clothing, such as jeans, t-shirts, and tennis shoes. All volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes.
