Artichoke Leaf Extract

Common in Mediterranean countries, artichoke is high in antioxidants and antimicrobial properties. It's been used to prevent liver damage, reduce cholesterol, and ease dyspepsia.

Specifically, a study monitored men and women 17 to 80 years old who had upper abdominal pain or discomfort in the form of bloating or nausea for at least three months. After consuming a supplement blend of ginger and artichoke leaf extract for two weeks, only the group who received the blend experienced a decrease in symptoms. At four weeks, researchers found that the treatment reduced indigestion in more than 60% of cases. They theorized that the artichoke leaf extract's antispasmodic properties and its ability to increase bile acid secretion both promote gastrointestinal transit, which helps ease bloating and fullness.

Peppermint Oil and Caraway Oil

Studies have shown that supplements containing a combination of enteric-coated peppermint oil and caraway oil may help reduce indigestion symptoms. This formula is thought to relax the stomach muscles, as well as help food pass through the stomach more quickly.

Symptoms

While abdominal discomfort following a meal is the hallmark of indigestion, other symptoms may include:

  • Mild to severe pain or burning in the epigastric area (located between the lower end of the chest bone and the navel)
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Belching

Since indigestion may signal a more serious condition in some cases, it's important to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Frequent vomiting
  • Painful swallowing
  • Bloody or black stool
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite
  • New or worsened heartburn
  • Indigestion accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or pain that radiates to your jaw, neck, or arm

However, there is no clinical evidence that this works.3

Chew Gum

Chewing a piece or two of gum – go sugar-free to protect your teeth – can naturally help relieve heartburn by stimulating your production of saliva. Saliva is naturally alkaline and therefore helps neutralize stomach acid, thus eliminating the classic burning sensation associated with heartburn.4

Smoking also reduces the effectiveness of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) valve, making it more likely for stomach acid to rise into your food pipe and cause a painful burning sensation in your chest and throat.11

Snack on Licorice

Studies have found a type of licorice called deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) may increase the mucous coating of the esophagus lining, helping to reduce irritation caused by stomach acid.12 Find it in pill or liquid form in health food stores and drugstores.

Be Careful What You Drink

Alcohol, coffee, and whole milk can all lead to heartburn, as can peppermint tea. Sodas and carbonated drinks may relax the LES and make your stomach acid more acidic, increasing your risk of heartburn. Canceling your plans to sit on the toilet is basicallythe worst. Especially when you're not sure whether you should chug ginger ale, head straight to the ER, or just get comfy on your throne and let nature, um, run its course.

Well, your plan of attack will depend on what you’re dealing with: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, a period from hell, etc. You get it, but in case you need a reminder, here are some common symptoms of stomach aches, which can occur whenever there's irritation of the stomach lining, says Henry Herrera, MD, a gastroenterologist at DHR Health Gastroenterology in Texas.

  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Excessive belching
  • Excessive flatulence
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting

While a painful tummy may have you reaching for the nearest remedy ASAP, it’s important to rule out things that won’t work. There’s a lot of misinformation out there on how to treat a stomach ache.

That bottle of ginger ale, for instance? You may want to skip it and opt for some ginger tea instead. Ginger ale can actually make stomach pain worse thanks to its bubbles and sugar, which can feed the bad bacteria making you sick. Lemon water? Yeah, skip that too. “Keep in mind that acidic foods also tend to be associated with increases in reflux symptoms,” says Dr. Herrera.

If you're feeling a rumble down below and aren't sure how to *properly* get rid of your stomach ache, opt for one of these remedies.

1Give it time

Mild stomach aches can go away on their own if you just give them time. But waiting it out can also be useful when you're dealing with crazy diarrhea, which could be a symptom of mild food poisoning.

While this can totally strike at your neighborhood sushi joint, it's also super-common while traveling overseas. That's because your body has to adjust to the new bacteria in the food and water you're consuming while away from home.

Unfortunately, the cure is just waiting it out. "You need to let your body flush itself," says Amit Bhan, MD, a gastroenterologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

2Try over-the-counter medicine

Gas is caused by two things: eating gas-forming foods such as green vegetables, fruits with peels on them, carbonated beverages, cabbage, and beans; or by swallowing air, says Michael Wolfe, MD, chief of gastroenterology at Boston University's School of Medicine.

"People [take in extra air] when they drink with straws, talk with their mouths full, eat too fast, or when they're nervous," Dr. Wolfe says.

If you have a gas problem that you think is causing your stomach pain, take an over-the-counter anti-gas drug like Mylanta Gas. Beano, Dr. Wolfe says, is another good product, especially if veggies aren't friendly to your system—it works by breaking down raffinose, a sugar byproduct in plants that can be a bugger for many people to digest.

If diarrhea strikes at an inconvenient time, or if it's so frequent that it keeps you from sleeping, Dr. Bhan recommends knocking back some Pepto-Bismol. The pink liquid will attack the diarrhea-causing bacteria in your system so you can sleep and function during the day. You can also take imodium, which works by slowing down the speed at which fluids move through your intestines.

3Take ibuprofen if you have cramps

Sure, you expect cramps around the time of your period, but nausea, upset stomach, and diarrhea? Not cool.

Nancy Cossler, MD, an obstetrician and gynecologist at University Hospital's Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, says it's pretty normal for your whole abdominal region to go haywire around the time you're menstruating.

"Hormones cause contractions of the uterine muscle, which causes cramping," she says. "It's completely normal if your stomach cramps, causing an upset stomach or diarrhea [around your period]."

To ease cramps, take an ibuprofen 12 to 24 hours before you're expecting your period, Dr. Cossler says. Then take the prescribed amount every three to six hours for three days.

4Eat yogurt

If you deal with constant stomach issues like bloating, yogurt can help keep your digestive system in tip-top shape.

Though annoying, bloating is not a huge cause for alarm. "Don't be too worried," says David C. Metz, MD, a professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. "Anything from menstruation to constipation can cause it."

Try to stay away from salt, since it makes you retain water, and avoid foods that cause gas—such as beans, broccoli, and cauliflower. As long as you've ruled out lactose intolerance, try eating yogurt with "live and active cultures" (look for this phrase on the label), which can help regulate your digestive system.

5Drink milk

Sometimes stomach aches can cause other pains, like heartburn, an irritation of the esophagus that feels like a burning or tightness from stomach contents that are forced back up into the esophagus.

At at-home remedy: milk. "When I have heartburn, I drink a glass of milk," says Jeffry A. Katz, MD, a gastroenterologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland. "Milk neutralizes the acid produced by the stomach," he says.

6Avoid spicy foods

Eating spicy foods before bed is a common culprit of acid reflux, as is eating too much or too fast, smoking, and imbibing heavily. But sometimes nearly anything can make you feel the burn and deal with a stomach ache.

"This condition often hits at night, when you're in the lying-down position," says Minh Nguyen, MD, of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia. Acid travels from the stomach to the esophagus and throat, often causing heartburn, or a sore throat and bouts of coughing.

Dr. Nguyen recommends a prescription medicine or an over-the-counter antacid like Prilosec. But if you don't want to rely on drugs, cut back on the known provocateurs.

7Sip ginger tea

A simple cure may be waiting for you in your spice rack: Ginger root has a long history of being used successfully as a cure for an upset stomach.

The reason ginger works so well for digestion has never been precisely identified, but some say it speeds up the pace at which food moves into the small intestine from the stomach.

"[When] I've eaten too much and feel nauseated, I'll have ginger tea to soothe my stomach," says Charlene Prather, MD, an associate professor of gastroenterology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. "It's really easy to make—I just grate fresh ginger in water and add a little honey and it takes care of it," she says.

8Cut out fast food and eat more slowly

There's no sugar-coating this one: If you feel pain after eating, you likely ate too fast, too much, or the wrong thing.

The quick fix: Cut out fast food, and eat more slowly. If you're not a junk-food junkie and are still feeling pain after a meal, it's unlikely, but you could have gallbladder disease. "Women more often than men get it, and some get gallstones for no reason," says Francisco Marrero, MD, a gastroenterologist at the Cleveland Clinic. See your doctor to rule it out.

9Increase your fiber intake

One of the biggest stomach myths is that you have to go number two three times a day to have healthy bowels.

The truth? Everybody poops, but not with the same frequency. Still, constipation is very common in women, says Irwin Grosman, MD, gastroenterology chief at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. "There's a theory that there's a hormonal difference between men and women, and [that] women take longer to digest and eliminate food."

If you don't go every day, don't sweat it. But if you're experiencing other symptoms of constipation, such as bloating or gas, the simplest thing you can do is increase your fiber intake. Eat more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and beans, and kick-start your day with a high-fiber cereal.

10Get more exercise

Inactivity can sometimes cause constipation too. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise per day and keep yourself hydrated. If all that doesn't keep things moving, try a gentle over-the-counter fiber supplement like Metamucil.

11Avoid gas-producing veggies

If you're dealing with green poop and an upset stomach, these might be the culprit. "Our dietary vegetable intake is usually the cause for our green stool. Stomach aches in this setting can usually be remedied by avoiding the major gas-producing vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts," says Dr. Herrera.

12Get your regular meals in

The digestive system's natural contractions are felt more severely on an empty stomach. Without food, the stomach becomes a sort of gastric echo chamber.

Hunger pangs serve a handy purpose: They're like a text message from the stomach to the brain indicating that it's time to pursue nourishment.

The fix for this:Eat. But beware, because in rare cases an achy stomach could also indicate more than hunger. "Sometimes people sense a burning pain that gets better when you eat," says Mark Babyatsky, MD, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. "That could be an ulcer. If it persists, see a physician. If you've always had it, it could be just your appetite," he says. Babyatsky advises that you stay full by eating more small meals throughout the day.

13Try acupuncture or cognitive behavioral therapy

Sometimes a digestive disease, like gastritis or a peptic ulcer, may be to blame for indigestion. But more commonly, chronic indigestion is known as functional dyspepsia—or indigestion without a known health problem behind it, per the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

After ruling out any underlying health conditions with your doctor, an OTC antacid should help dissipate the discomfort, says Rita Knotts, MD, gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health.

If you're searching for a more long-term solution, Dr. Knotts recommends trying cognitive behavioral therapy or acupuncture, since the indigestion could be caused by stress.

14Avoid bubbly drinks

Burping is actually a natural reflex response to increased gas in your system, Dr. Knotts says. Foods or beverages that promote gas (think: carbonated beverages) may be to blame.

Dr. Knotts suggests avoiding bubbles, so swap soda or beer for water or wine. Try to keep portions of fiber-heavy foods small and eat slowly so your body can better break them down.

15Drink water

When you go for a run (or really, do any type of tough workout), you might feel that little pinch of pain in your side. That’s typically musculoskeletal pain caused by dehydration or eating too much before you started busting a move, says Dr. Knotts.

So drink up. Water should help cure your ache. And next time, before you begin exercising, Dr. Knotts suggests making sure you had some time to digest. Give yourself at least an hour (better yet, a couple) after a meal before you start breaking a sweat.

16Try chamomile tea

Chamomile can bring relief to symptoms of an upset stomach, including nausea and vomiting.

It contains bisabolol, which has anti-inflammatory properties and relaxes the smooth muscle lining of the digestive tract," says Dr. Herrera. Chamomile also has other compounds like azulene, chamazulene, and matricin, which give the herb anti-inflammatory properties.

17Have some spearmint or peppermint

Thanks to their menthol content, both of these can soothe the pain of a stomach ache. Menthol has been show to relax the muscles in the GI tract, says Dr. Herrera.

But if you're experiencing acid reflux, it's best to avoid these, he adds. "It can worsen reflux by relaxing the sphincter which keeps stomach contents out of the esophagus."

18Drink aloe vera juice

Just can't seem to go? Aloe can serve as a laxative, which is helpful for people who have stomach pain due to constipation, says Dr. Herrera.

Aloe juice may provide relief to those dealing with acid reflux by reducing the frequency of the symptoms associated with the condition, found a study published in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

19Try figs

Figs are chock full of fiber, which helps promote bowel movements in people who struggle with stomach aches due to constipation, says Dr. Herrera. In that way, they tend to act as a natural laxative.

Fiber can aid the digestive system in a variety of ways from adding bulk to stool to promoting the growth of healthy gut bacteria.

20Try a low-FODMAP diet

"This diet has been shown to be effective in managing stomach pain and bloating in patients with irritable bowel syndrome because it eliminates many gas-producing foods," Dr. Herrera says.

A low-FODMAP diet can possibly alleviate the symptoms of stomach aches, bloating and other gastrointestinal problems by limiting your intake of fermentable carbs. (This is an elimination diet, so you want to do this under the supervision of a health care provider.)

21Avoid laying down too quickly after a meal

This is especially important for people who are prone to acid reflux. "Laying down [too quickly] will result in stomach contents moving into the esophagus, which results in an unpleasant feeling of pressure or pain, along with a bitter taste," says Dr. Herrera.

22Take a warm bath

"Warm water has been used for relieving stress, which can often manifest as a stomach ache in many patients. It also helps relax tense muscles which can be present after a stressful day," says Dr. Herrera.

It may even help to add a bit of Epsom salt to it. "When epsom salt is placed in water, it dissolves, releasing magnesium. Some researchers believe that magnesium helps increase serotonin in the brain, which is involved in relaxation," Dr. Herrera adds. Though more research is still required, some there are studies linking magnesium to the reduction of stress and anxiety.

23When to see a doctor for stomach pain

Unless it's severe, stomach pain isn't always a sign that you need to head to a doctor. But when it's coupled with other problematic symptoms like blood in your stool, rectal bleeding, paleness, weight loss, difficulty swallowing, yellowing of the eyes, and severe nausea or vomiting, then it's best to go see your doctor immediately.

"While most people think of a stomach ache synonymously with gastritis, it’s important to understand that viscerally, pain in your abdominal area can be caused by a variety of disease processes which are not limited to the stomach," says Dr. Herrera. In rarer cases, abdominal pain can signal issues with other organs including the gallbladder, intestines, pancreas, or may be a sign of cancer or infection.

However, certain remedies are more effective than others. For example, the popular BRAT diet of bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast is no longer recommended for stomach bugs.

In this article we discuss common causes for your stomach ache and offer five natural home remedies proven to ease your pain and get back to feeling better.

Common stomach ache causes 

There are many reasons you may have a stomach ache, ranging from something as simple as taking medication on an empty stomach to something more serious, like an ulcer, says Rudolph Bedford, MD, a gastroenterologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California. 

Acute, short-term stomach aches usually last for between two to three days and don't necessarily require a doctor's visit. Here are some common causes of acute, short-term stomach aches:

  • Gas and indigestion
  • Allergic reaction to food
  • Food poisoning 
  • Stomach flu
  • Eating spicy foods
  • Taking certain medications on an empty stomach
  • Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Appendicitis (This condition is acute but very serious. Seek medical attention immediately if you believe you have appendicitis) 

Chronic stomach pain can be a sign of a more serious underlying condition and you should consider scheduling an appointment with a doctor. More serious stomach aches may be caused by the following: 

  • IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), an intestinal disorder.
  • Stomach ulcers
    • Gallstones (Gallbladder stones and inflammation)
    • Pancreatitis, a condition that causes the pancreas to become inflamed.
    • Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBS) which is caused by an inflamed digestive tract.
    • Ulcerative colitis, a type of IBD that causes chronic inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract.
  • Certain cancers including stomach, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and kidney

Bedford says that many patients respond well to home remedies, whether natural or over the counter. Here are five remedies to help ease your pain.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a natural remedy that's been used since ancient times. Ancient people native to India and China are thought to have used ginger years ago to treat their ailments. 

Today, ginger is still widely used as an effective remedy — and Bedford recommends it too for his patients suffering from stomach discomfort and nausea.  

Ginger can help with stomach pain because it acts as an anti-inflammatory. Additionally, if you're struggling with nausea, Bedford says ginger can relieve and prevent nausea and vomiting, and you don't have to chew on raw ginger to get relief. Bedford says any form of ginger can be beneficial.

You can consume ginger in multiple ways:

  • Chewing on the fresh ginger root itself
  • Drinking ginger ale (Ginger ale can be high in sugar, so if you're trying to cut back on sweets, this may not be the best option.)
  • Drinking ginger tea 
  • Eating ginger chews 
  • Ginger supplements 

2. Peppermint

Bedford says peppermint has provided his patients with relief from stomach aches, gas, and bloating. This is because the two main ingredients in peppermint — menthol and methyl salicylate — have antispasmodic properties, meaning they relieve spasms, such as those that IBS sufferers may experience.

"For many people who have stomach aches, it's usually caused by spasming of the lining or the walls of the small bowel, colon, or stomach, and peppermint oil just seems to relax those muscles," says Bedford.

Overall, the stomach and surrounding muscles will relax thanks to these properties, reducing spasms, which can lead to relief from stomach ache, gas, bloating, and nausea. 

Studies surrounding peppermint and stomach aches have mostly been centered around IBS, and results are promising. For example, a meta-analysis published in in the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine reviewed 12 studies for a total of participants. The meta-analysis found that peppermint oil capsules are more effective at providing symptom relief than a placebo, with a low risk of adverse effects. 

Quick tip: The two main ways to consume peppermint are through peppermint oil capsules or peppermint tea. 

3. Apply heat

Using a heating pad or hot water bottle can help relieve patients' stomach pain, Bedford says. Just make sure that there is a barrier between your skin and the heating pad or water bottle to avoid burns. Lie down in a position that's comfortable and then place it on your upper or lower abdomen, wherever you are experiencing the pain.

The heat acts as a muscle relaxer for the muscles in your belly which can help relieve pain associated with muscle cramping and gas. Heating pads are great if your stomach ache may be stemming from stress and anxiety. Additionally, if your belly pain is due to menstrual cramps, a heating pad is a great remedy for that, too. 

Additionally, researchers at the University College London discovered that applying heat of at least º Fahrenheit externally can block internal pain receptors, which in turn will make the original pain less detectable by the body. The researchers found that this mechanism works at a molecular level, similar to pain medications. The heat works by blocking pain receptors, called P2X3 receptors, which transmit pain signals to the brain.

Note: Aside from using a heating pad, you can also take a hot bath for a similar effect. But people who are pregnant should not use a heating pad on their stomach at any point during pregnancy because excess heat can increase the risk of birth defects.

4. Stay hydrated

Dehydration can cause a mineral imbalance in your body, which disrupts normal bodily function and can trigger a series of symptoms including stomach pain. 

So, if your pain is from dehydration, make sure you're getting enough fluids in your diet. Especially if you're sick and sweating a lot, have diarrhea, or are vomiting as these conditions can worsen dehydration.

The notion that you need to drink eight glasses of water a day is a myth. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommend that women get 91 fl. oz. of fluids per day and men get fl. oz. This can come from water, other beverages, and foods.

5. Drink diluted apple cider vinegar

If you're dealing with a stomach ache caused by gas or indigestion, apple cider vinegar might do the trick to help aid digestion. Bedford says the "recipe" that homeopathic doctors usually recommend is:

  • One cup of warm water
  • One tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
  • One tablespoon of honey

Taking the apple cider vinegar alone undiluted is not recommended since the acidity can irritate your throat and deteriorate tooth enamel. Plus, mixing it with water and honey can make the vinegar more palatable. 

Most of the evidence for apple cider vinegar and stomach aches is anecdotal, and more research is needed to determine if this is a sure-fire remedy for most.

Different remedies work for different stomach aches. And what works for your friend may not work for you. So it may take some trial and error to figure out what remedy you respond to best.

If your symptoms are persistent, not responding to home remedies, and interfering with your daily life, Bedford says you should see a gastroenterologist to figure out what's going on and get you on the right treatment plan. 

Additionally, he says if you're seeing any blood whether in your bowel movements or if you're coughing or vomiting blood along with your stomach ache, this could be a sign of more serious conditions such as diverticulitis, ulcers, colon cancer, or rectal cancer, and you should seek medical attention as soon as possible.

When it comes to home remedies, apple cider vinegar has got to be near the top of the list as a &#;go to&#; for just about everything. For indigestion, most folks put a shot of ACV (roughly 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon) in a glass of room temperature water and drink it down. Some add a bit of honey to mellow the flavor. As we age, most of us produce less stomach acid, which bogs down digestion. A little extra acid helps get things moving again.

If I end up eating a less than stellar meal that does not sit well, the first thing I do is grab for a bottle of kombucha when I get home. Kombucha is a live culture food, which means it that contains friendly bacteria that help your body do its job.

Milk kefir, water kefir, yogurt, kraut, kimchi or any fermented food will act to boost the populations of good microorganisms in your digestive tract. These are also very good to consume with a meal to avoid indigestion in the first place.

You can make your own live cultured foods for pennies on the dollar with starter cultures from Kombucha Kamp or other culture providers. Some cultured food can be made with nothing but the base ingredient (such as vegetables) and salt.

Frequent vomiting can be dangerous because it can lead to dehydration. It can also lead to inhaling food or liquids, which can cause choking and other problems.

Be sure to tell your cancer care team if you have nausea or are vomiting because there are medicines that can help. These medicines should be taken on a regular schedule, or as needed, as prescribed by your doctor. And if a certain drug doesn’t work, your cancer care team may be able to recommend another one. It may take a few tries to find the medicines that work best for you. Talk with your cancer care team about what's causing your nausea and vomiting and what you can do about it.

Anti-nausea and vomiting drugs (anti-emetics) are the main treatments for nausea and vomiting, but some non-drug treatments can also be used. These involve using your mind and body with the help of a qualified therapist.

Non-drug treatments may be used alone for mild nausea, and are often helpful for anticipatory nausea and vomiting. These methods can be used with anti-nausea and vomiting medicines for a person whose cancer treatment is likely to cause nausea and vomiting. If you’d like to try one or more of these methods, ask a member of your cancer care team if the methods are safe for you and to refer you to a therapist trained in these techniques.

These methods try to decrease nausea and vomiting by:

  • Helping you feel relaxed
  • Distracting you from what’s going on
  • Helping you feel in control
  • Making you feel less helpless

Below are some non-drug methods that have helped some people. Most of them have few or no side effects. Before using any of these treatments, check with your cancer care team to see if they are safe for you. Ask your cancer care team what non-drug treatments they may have available and which ones they can recommend.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis can be used to make behavior changes to control nausea and vomiting. It creates a state of intense attention, willingness, and readiness to accept an idea. It is done by a trained specialist.

Relaxation techniques

Relaxation techniques such as meditation (focusing the mind), breathing exercises, or progressive muscle relaxation (tensing and relaxing the muscles) can help decrease nausea and vomiting.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback helps people reach a state of relaxation. It uses monitoring devices to help people gain conscious control over physical processes that are usually controlled automatically. Using biofeedback, a person learns to control a certain physical response of the body, such as nausea and vomiting. This is done by tuning in to the moment-to-moment body changes that are linked to the physical response. For example, biofeedback can be used to prevent skin temperature changes, such as those that often happen before nausea and vomiting starts. Biofeedback alone has not been found to work as well as for nausea and vomiting as the combination of biofeedback and progressive muscle relaxation.

Guided imagery

Guided imagery lets people mentally remove themselves from the treatment center and imagine that they are in a place that’s relaxing for them. The place can be a vacation spot, a room at home, or some other safe or pleasant place. While trying to imagine what they usually feel, hear, see, and taste in the pleasant place, some people can mentally block the nausea and vomiting.

Systematic desensitization

Systematic desensitization helps people learn how to imagine an anxiety-producing situation (such as nausea and vomiting) and reduce the anxiety related to the situation. In most cases, what a person can imagine without anxiety, he or she can then experience in the real world without anxiety.

Acupuncture or acupressure

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese technique in which very thin needles are put into the skin. There are a number of different acupuncture techniques, including some that use pressure rather than needles (acupressure). Acupuncture or acupressure can help with nausea.

Music therapy

Specially trained health professionals use music to help promote healing.. Music therapists may use different methods with each person, depending on that person’s needs and abilities. There’s some evidence that, when used with standard treatment, music therapy can help to reduce nausea and vomiting due to chemo.

For vomiting

  • If you are in bed, lie on your side so that you won’t inhale the vomit.
  • Ask that medicines be prescribed in the form that would be easiest for you to tolerate, such as dissolving tablets or suppositories, if possible. To prevent vomiting, take the medicine at the first hint of nausea.
  • Wait for the vomiting to stop before eating or drinking anything. After vomiting stops, start taking in small amounts of clear liquids slowly and increase as tolerated.
  • Sit upright after vomiting.
  • Try liquids in the form of ice chips or frozen juice chips, which can be slowly dissolved in your mouth.

What caregivers can do

  • When the patient feels nauseated, offer to make meals or ask others to make meals to reduce bothersome food odors. Use kitchen vent fans to reduce smells.
  • Cover or remove foods with strong or unpleasant smells.
  • Use plastic forks and spoons rather than metal ones, which may cause a bitter taste..
  • Ask about medicines to help prevent vomiting.
  • Watch the patient for dizziness, weakness, or confusion.
  • Try to help the patient avoid constipation and dehydration by encouraging them to sip on clear liquids slowly throughout the day. Either of these can make nausea worse.

Call the cancer care team if the patient

  • Might have inhaled some of the vomited material
  • Is vomiting over a period of days,
  • Vomits blood or material that looks like coffee grounds
  • Cannot take in more than 4 cups of liquid or ice chips in a day or hasn’t eaten for more than 2 days
  • Can’t take medicines
  • Becomes weak, dizzy, or confused
  • Loses 2 or more pounds in 1 to 2 days (This means they are losing water quickly and might be getting dehydrated.)
  • Has dark yellow urine and doesn’t urinate as often or as much

The 12 Best Natural Remedies for an Upset Stomach

Try drinking peppermint, ginger or licorice tea to soothe an upset stomach.

Just about everyone gets an upset stomach from time to time, and while it's usually nothing to be concerned about, it can be a real pain. Fortunately, there are a number of natural remedies for an upset stomach that may help.

But keep in mind that the term "upset stomach" can mean different things to different people, says Mark Epstein, MD, a board-certified gastroenterologist at Middlesex Digestive Health & Endoscopy Center in Acton, Massachusetts. And a variety of causes can lead to that feeling of an unsettled tummy, like acid reflux, infection, overeating or gas and bloating.

Plus, everyone's body is different. That's why you may want to try a few different remedies to see what works best for you.

Below are 12 home remedies for an upset stomach recommended by doctors, and four that you should probably skip.

1. Sniff Some Peppermint

"Peppermint relaxes the smooth muscle found in the gastrointestinal tract," Dr. Epstein says. "As such, it can be used effectively in the treatment of abdominal cramps."

One caveat, though: This relaxing effect could worsen symptoms of acid reflux, so steer clear if you're having symptoms like heartburn, chest pain or difficulty swallowing.

The easiest way to consume peppermint is by drinking peppermint tea, but you can also use peppermint oil as an aromatherapy treatment.

"Peppermint is especially potent in treating tummy aches," says Carrie Lam, MD, a primary care doctor at Lam Clinic in Tustin, California. "Just add a drop of the essential oil to a bowl of hot water and inhale the steam, or add a few drops to a cloth and either inhale periodically or place it on clothing where you can smell it."

Do Mints Help an Upset Stomach?

Research supports using peppermint for indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), according to Mount Sinai, but the "mints" you buy at the deli or pharmacy only contain trace amounts of peppermint — if any at all — so try peppermint tea, peppermint oil or peppermint capsules instead.

2. Try a Version of the BRAT Diet

You may want to stick to eating bland foods when your stomach is upset.

"The BRAT diet consists of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast," Dr. Epstein says.

Why can these foods help settle an upset stomach? They're typically easy to digest, he says, and are well-tolerated when someone has diarrhea or a stomach virus. (Note that rice in this case refers to white rice. While brown rice is usually a healthy choice, it's high in fiber and can be tough to digest, so you probably want to avoid it while you're having stomach troubles.)

Dr. Epstein usually suggests sticking to this diet for three to seven days in order to firm up your stools and give the gastrointestinal tract a chance to heal from your digestive issues.

Because these foods are low in protein and fat, though, you'll want to add in some lean proteins like chicken, turkey, fish and eggs. Just be sure to keep them plain, because higher-fat foods can make an upset stomach and diarrhea worse. Skip frying them in oil or butter and try baking or boiling instead.

3. Drink Ginger Tea

"One of the most effective and natural tummy ache remedies is ginger," Dr. Lam says. "Ginger calms the nervous system and stomach muscles, reduces nausea and promotes the secretion of saliva, which contains enzymes that help with digestion."

A January study in &#;Food Science & Nutrition&#; concluded that consuming 1 gram of ginger daily relieved nausea symptoms in pregnant people. And a July study in &#;Supportive Care in Cancer&#; found that to 1 gram of ginger significantly reduced nausea symptoms in people going through chemotherapy.

You can take ginger capsules or suck on ginger candies, but Dr. Lam suggests consuming it as a tea.

"You can make your own pot of fresh ginger tea by grating some ginger, adding it to a cup of hot water, adding honey and letting it steep for 10 minutes," she says. "Then drink a sip or two every few minutes. If your body is more sensitive, you can steep it for five minutes and slowly increase thereafter."

Tip

Before you start guzzling ginger ale, check the ingredient list. Not all commercial ginger ales use a significant amount of the herb, which is why homemade ginger tea is a better bet.

4. Try Licorice

Teas that help with digestion can relieve stomach pain after eating too much.

Licorice root has been used as a home remedy for upset stomach for centuries thanks to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. While many consider this an old wives' tale, a small June study in &#;Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine&#; found that taking a 75 mg licorice capsule twice daily for 30 days led to significant stomach pain relief in 50 adults.

You could try a supplement or licorice root tea, which is available in many grocery or health food stores. Or try making your own tea by combining two tablespoons of licorice root powder with a cup of boiled water.

Warning

While licorice root is generally considered safe, large amounts of it have been linked to serious side effects including increased blood pressure, decreased potassium levels and premature birth, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, have high blood pressure or have heart or kidney disease, talk to your doctor before trying licorice root.

5. Eat Foods With Probiotics

Studies show that eating probiotic-rich foods can benefit several gastrointestinal issues, including easing constipation and preventing diarrhea, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

Some common probiotic foods include:

  • Yogurt
  • Kefir
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kimchi
  • Kombucha
  • Tempeh
  • Miso

Probiotics "help in balancing gut flora, naturally bringing about a stronger and healthier digestive system altogether," Dr. Lam says. "They also relieve diarrhea, gas, bloating and indigestion."

6. Do Some Yoga

Certain yoga poses may help get rid of an upset stomach.

Some research has shown that practicing yoga can help ease digestion. A December study in &#;Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology&#; found that doing yoga significantly decreased the bowel symptoms and anxiety of people with IBS. And another December study in the &#;International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health&#; found that yoga decreased abdominal cramps and bloating in people with premenstrual symptoms.

What's more, a paper in the &#;International Journal of Yoga&#; suggests yoga may also affect stomachaches by helping you to de-stress, thus easing digestion.

Here are some good yoga poses for stomachaches:

Seated Spinal Twist

  1. Start by sitting down on the mat with your knees bent in front of you.
  2. Place your left knee down to the ground so that the left foot is close to your right glute.
  3. Bend your right knee and place your right foot over your left thigh so that the sole of your right foot is flat on the ground.
  4. Take a deep twist to the right, placing your left elbow against your right knee for support.
  5. Repeat on the other side.

Reclined Wind Relieving

  1. Start by lying down on your back.
  2. Bring your knees into your chest and hug your arms around your shins.
  3. Breathe into your abdomen as you pull your legs closer to you.
  4. Hold for as long as feels good to you.

7. Drink Plenty of Water

A tall glass of water truly is a simple solution to many of the body's maladies, but this is especially true for indigestion, because vomiting or diarrhea can make you dehydrated.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends drinking between 91 and ounces of water each day, or about 11 to 15 cups for the average adult.

A good way to tell if you're hydrated? Your urine color should be pale yellow to clear, according to UW-Madison University Health Services.

Tip

If you have vomiting along with your upset stomach, try taking small sips of water or sucking on ice chips.

8. Avoid Alcohol

When you're not feeling well, stick to plain beverages like water to help you stay hydrated.

"Alcohol decreases lower esophageal sphincter pressure and delays gastric emptying, both of which can increase acid reflux," Dr. Epstein says.

Because of this, and the fact that it can increase dehydration, he recommends avoiding it at all costs until you're feeling better.

9. Limit Carbonated Drinks

Like alcohol, carbonated beverages can lower esophageal sphincter pressure, which allows acid to flow backward from your stomach to your throat, and they can also increase bloating and gas, Dr. Epstein says.

A June study in &#;BMC Gastroenterology&#; found that people with IBS who drank carbonated beverages on a regular basis reported more severe symptoms of the condition.

Nix Smoking

If you have stomach pain and gas from eating too much, reaching for a cigarette won't help.

"Smoking relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter pressure and may increase acid content in the esophagus," Dr. Epstein says, which can make your throat hurt and could make a sour stomach feel worse.

For these reasons, it's best to avoid smoking until your symptoms improve.

According to the National Institutes of Health, 65 percent of adults have some form of lactose intolerance, and many people might not know they don't digest dairy well. Because you want to make digestion as easy as possible when you have an upset stomach, you may not want to risk eating dairy foods.

Dr. Epstein recommends laying off lactose-containing products (think: cow's milk, yogurt, ice cream) for seven to 14 days just to be safe.

Avoid Lying Down

You might be tempted to lie down to get rid of a stomachache, but it could end up making things worse.

People who tend to have an upset stomach at night should "avoid lying down or going to sleep within three hours of their evening meal," Dr. Epstein says.

Why's that? Well, lying down increases the chance that stomach acid will move upward in the body and cause heartburn, which can feel like an upset stomach.

To avoid this, Dr. Epstein recommends propping yourself up on pillows so your head, neck and upper chest are about four inches off the bed.

What About Apple Cider Vinegar?

"Apple cider vinegar is one of the oldest and most widely used home remedies for 'upset stomach,'" Dr. Epstein says.

Although anecdotal reports suggest that drinking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar can help relieve gas and bloating, there's no scientific evidence to support this.

And don't try this as an acid reflux remedy. Apple cider vinegar is acidic and can make the condition worse, Dr. Epstein says. The same goes for white vinegar — don't use it as a stomachache remedy.

What About Aloe Vera Juice?

Aloe vera juice likely isn't the best thing to drink for stomach pain relief.

Some people claim that drinking aloe vera juice is a stomachache remedy, but this hasn't been proven in research.

"Aloe juice can benefit some people with chronic constipation but can produce diarrhea and cramping as a side effect," Dr. Epstein says.

If you try it, start by drinking a small amount to see how you react before having any more. You can typically find it in your local supermarket.

What About Turmeric?

Turmeric has been used to treat stomach problems for thousands of years as its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds are believed to help ease digestion. But there's not much scientific evidence for this remedy.

Dr. Lam recommends turmeric as a digestive aid but cautions that the benefits can "often be dose-dependent, since not everyone can tolerate these compounds," so try mixing a little bit into your food and seeing how you feel before adding more.

What About Activated Charcoal?

Some people think activated charcoal helps with tummy troubles from a hangover, but there's no proof that it really works.

Dr. Lam gives activated charcoal the nod as a home remedy to relieve gas and bloating, as it "absorbs toxins and gas, and takes them along when excreted from the body."

But according to the National Library of Medicine, there's not enough evidence to prove that activated charcoal is an effective gas remedy, nor that it helps with indigestion.

If you choose to take it, do so only in small amounts, and be aware that side effects can include constipation and black stools. And be sure to check with your doctor if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Natural Remedies to Soothe Indigestion

Also known as dyspepsia, indigestion is marked by a feeling of abdominal discomfort after a meal. Key symptoms include pain or a burning sensation in the upper abdomen.

Causes of Indigestion

Indigestion often stems from overeating, eating too quickly, or consuming an excess of greasy or spicy foods. Certain emotional issues, such as stress or anxiety, can also trigger indigestion.

Indigestion may be particularly common among individuals with the following conditions:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Abnormality of the pancreas or bile ducts
  • Gastritis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Gallstones
  • Stomach cancer

People taking antibiotics or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may also be prone to indigestion.

Natural Remedies

Although research on natural treatments for indigestion is limited, practitioners of alternative medicine may recommend sipping ginger or peppermint tea to calm the digestive system after a meal.

Studies suggest that these other natural remedies may also provide indigestion relief:

Artichoke Leaf Extract

Common in Mediterranean countries, artichoke is high in antioxidants and antimicrobial properties. It's been used to prevent liver damage, reduce cholesterol, and ease dyspepsia.

Specifically, a study monitored men and women 17 to 80 years old who had upper abdominal pain or discomfort in the form of bloating or nausea for at least three months. After consuming a supplement blend of ginger and artichoke leaf extract for two weeks, only the group who received the blend experienced a decrease in symptoms. At four weeks, researchers found that the treatment reduced indigestion in more than 60% of cases. They theorized that the artichoke leaf extract's antispasmodic properties and its ability to increase bile acid secretion both promote gastrointestinal transit, which helps ease bloating and fullness.

Peppermint Oil and Caraway Oil

Studies have shown that supplements containing a combination of enteric-coated peppermint oil and caraway oil may help reduce indigestion symptoms. This formula is thought to relax the stomach muscles, as well as help food pass through the stomach more quickly.

Symptoms

While abdominal discomfort following a meal is the hallmark of indigestion, other symptoms may include:

  • Mild to severe pain or burning in the epigastric area (located between the lower end of the chest bone and the navel)
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Belching

Since indigestion may signal a more serious condition in some cases, it's important to seek medical attention if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Frequent vomiting
  • Painful swallowing
  • Bloody or black stool
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite
  • New or worsened heartburn
  • Indigestion accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, or pain that radiates to your jaw, neck, or arm

Using Natural Remedies

Due to the limited research, it's too soon to recommend any natural remedy as a treatment for indigestion. It's also important to note that self-treating a condition and avoiding or delaying standard care may have serious consequences. If you're considering using alternative medicine in the treatment of indigestion, make sure to consult your physician first.

Simply slowing down while you eat may help reduce your risk of indigestion. Other prevention strategies include limiting your intake of coffee and carbonated beverages, practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing and yoga, and eating smaller, more frequent meals rather than two or three larger meals.

Standard treatments for indigestion include antacids or medications that decrease acid production or help the stomach move food more quickly into the small intestine.

Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help soothe an upset stomach. It also contains chemicals that can accelerate stomach contractions to move offending foods through the stomach more quickly. It can be consumed in chew or supplement form or added to beverages like tea.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

The acids in apple cider vinegar promote alkalinity in the stomach, which alleviates nausea. It has a strong, sour flavor, so some people consume it as a “shot.” You can also add it to water with a touch of honey and sip it, if you prefer.

3. Carbonated Drinks

Some people find that the bubbles in carbonated drinks help soothe an upset stomach, in part by making it easier for them to burp and release stomach pressure. For others, gas and acidity can make matters worse. If you’re not sure how these drinks affect you, sip them slowly and cautiously.
